You do understand that we're far more likely to move down then up? I'd like some good luck eventually too, I just don't think we've been monumentally screwed.

We were more likely to end in the top 3 then at 4. That is fact.

The Celtics and Suns are drafting accordingly to probability.

The Sixers outperformed and we're frustrated because their tanking has paid off I need multiple years now.

The Lakers outperformed but they had almost identical odds for 1-2-3 individually (it could have as easily been 1 or 3). They had about equal odds to land in the 1-2-3 range as they did to get 4 or 5 (and only slightly worse odds than drafting 4-6).

It sucks but we all did the simulations and a lot of the results were like this. Tanking and previous trades are big determining factors.

It is not rigged. It's lottery. Literally random combinations of numbers.

Knicks get hometown hero in Ewing
Magic get #1 pick with only one ping pong ball in the hopper
Cavs get hometown hero in LeBron
Cavs also get a slue of #1 picks after "The Decision"
Boston and LA get 1 and 2 with Lonzo Ball going to LA comfortably

It's Rigged. Don't convince yourself otherwise.

The main issue is Magic Johnson guaranteeing that despite having odds to move down, they would be in the top 3. That is the issue.
He told Walton that weeks ago that they would for sure be in the top 3.

So what? We were more likely to land at 4 than any other spot and by quite a margin and that is also fact. We had a chance to get lucky and it didn't happen. I understand being disappointed, I don't get the histrionics (in general, not aimed at anyone specifically) or the insistence that the fix must be in simply because we were a little unlucky.

Can we sue to make it an open draw? It seems like only in america is there a sports lottery behind closed door - it makes zero sense to do it this way.

I don't like to believe in fixes but the Lakers "magically" get the number two spot exactly where they needed to be to get Ball.

They get a Hollywood ending when they need one.. again... and again....and again...

Do it like the NFL and MLB

Worst team gets the first pick in the draft

The Dbacks got 2 number one picks.

That's how they used to do it. They changed to a lottery in an attempt to keep teams from out and out tanking. In football and basketball it would almost never make sense to tank for a significant portion of the season for just one player but the NBA is far more star driven than the other leagues.

As much as I'd like to believe it was rigged, a legit accounting firm audits the process. No way they risk their business over a sports lottery.

Regardless, the lottery system does not work for the NBA as presently administered.

My thinking is the present system is measured for millions of spins like a slot machine. Thus for the odds to work, it will take millions of tries for the math to work out correctly. Unfortunately most fans do not have millions of years to wait.

I don't think it's karma as a hypocritical Lakers fans suggests. But the fact is that we were in the 2 spot because the Suns rested vets at a time when Orlando and Philly were "gaining" on us. It was successful in that it moved us solidly into top 4 territory.

The fact that it takes place behind closed doors is all you need to know. I can hire my brother in law's accounting firm also.

As Bickley said, Magic did not look like a man who was surprised by the results last night.

There is no way that a team with the 2nd worst record should pick 4th, let alone have the highest modal chance of picking 4th than any other slot.

I don't want to ever see a tank thread again. This is why.

McD essentially said that. The primary goal in resting players was limiting the downside in the draft. We could draft no lower than 5th. Without tanking it could have been 7 or 8.

Also it is nice to draft #32 in the 2nd round. There might be a player there the Suns like.

It's not behind closed doors. You can watch the video of it on the NBA website. It's boring though which is why it's not on ESPN. And the firm they hired isn't some small accounting firm. It's Ernst and Young who did $26 Billion in revenue last year. They aren't going to risk that over the draft lottery.

You all think you are angry now, just wait until next year... Celtics get Nets first pick AGAIN and Lakers are all but a lock to be in the lottery AGAIN. I will lay odds that the Suns have a worse record than both next year (well, Boston is a given) and both LA and Boston will be picking higher than the Suns next year, probably in the top three again, with a much better crop of talent at the top end.

The NBA is a giant pile of crap unless you are one of the half dozen top market franchises or are lucky enough to have one of the marketable stars in the league. The rest of the teams can literally go drop dead as far as those who run the league care.
The Lakers don't get their pick next year. Because they kept it this year, next year it's 100% unprotected so even if they got #1 they'd lose it to Philly.

But they kept their 2019 pick now and only have to send 2nd rounders to magic. Trust me, this played out SO much in the lakers favor it's almost inconceivable.

I did not consider that, but most happy to hear... Lakers "lucking" into top two lottery pick again next year would have made me livid.

Many years ago, wasn't the lottery drawing actually televised?? For some reason I remember watching the ping pong balls pop up with the teams logo.. Or it was a nightmare ;-)

Maybe that's one way to quiet the conspiracy theorists, actually televising the drawing.
