Does anybody know anything about this 6'8 280 lb DE out of Miami? The U hasn't done very well the past couple of season. Beside his size, what kind of player is he?

Calais Campbell, Miami
Height: 6-8. Weight: 282.
40 Time: 4.77.
Projected Round: 1-2.
Calais Campbell has declared for the 2008 NFL Draft.

Some of his measurables compare to Julius Peppers'. Recorded 11 sacks in 2006. He's only a rising junior, meaning he's got room to grow. That's scary because I just don't see how NFL teams, particularly ones with lesser offensive tackles, are going to contain him.

Calais Campbell Scouting Report
Position: DE
School & Year/Status: Miami - Junior
Height & Weight: 6'8 - 280 lbs.
Ranked #4 on our Top 100 Prospects Board

2008 NFL Draft Prospect - Scouting Report
Campbell was highly touted coming into his junior season at University of Miami. He was recruited as a tight end and as a defensive end for a lot of major powers in NCAA before landing with the Canes'. He was redshirted his freshman year and found his niche along the defensive line. He was soon dubbed "Big Show" by his teammates because of his massive 6'8, 280 pound frame and incredible talent. He was one of the most physically gifted athletes on the Canes' roster during the 2007 season. He uses his hands well, which is no wonder because he played tight end during his high school days. His junior season was somewhat of a let down to some by compiling six sacks; those numbers are a bit deceiving because Campbell was one of the most disruptive forces the ACC had to offer. Following his junior campaign he was an All-ACC honorable mention. NFL teams will be salivating over Campbell's potential at the next level. His height and speed are regarded as top-notch and will certainly transfer over well in the NFL. Campbell will shine during the combine and will be deserving of a top 15 selection come April.

I don't like this kid very much. He was a nonfactor in the games I saw this year. I'd much prefer Groves, even though he didn't light it up this year either. But, he was hobbled by injuries and a lot of attention from SEC linemen.

He has no place what so ever in a 3-4 defense. At 6-8 280 he is to skiny to hold up at the 3-4 DE spot and not enough lateral speed or agility to play 3-4 OLB. He is a pure 4-3 DE.

Rivals knows nothing about the NFL draft. Seriously.

He's a pure 4-3 DE.

I was thinking that as well. Hearing it from you two makes me feel a lot smarter. Thanks.

they were talking about this guy on espn and said they were very disappointed with his growth. he had a great junior year, but there was little or no improvement his senior year. i dont want him. id rather have cason, mendenhal, or jake long for sure.

I would rather have Long (either of them, but preferably Chris) too, but he (they) wont be there.

We could have the #6 instead of the #16 and neither of the Longs would probably be there

I didn't know Oher declared. If he did I would get on his gravy train pretty quickly, although everything I've heard about the kid wasn't from his junior year.

What do you draftniks know about his current progress as a player?

Is everything
If after 4 hours we still maintain an interest in drafting him we should see a doctor.

I thought the 3-4 requires extremely large, powerful DE's who have the assignment of taking on 2 o-lineman. 3-4 DE's are not required to be pass-rushing specialists, as they are in the 4-3, they just need to be big enough to neutralize the o-lineman to the LB's can fly around and make plays.

I may be completely wrong, as my knowledge of the 3-4 is not great yet.
