While Rogue One did a very good job of explaining why one X-Wing was able to destroy the Death Star, there is another plot hole from 4 that still kind of bugs me. Why did the Empire seem to completely forget about the plans once the Millennium Falcon left Mos Eisley? Tarkin never asked Leia about them. There was never any discussion about them being on board the Falcon even though it was the ship they were looking for. It was almost like they forgot that it was such a big deal and the rebel fleet sacrificed a lot to get them. I've never really understood that.

I think it was kind-of explained. Vader did speculate that "they must be trying to return the stolen plans" to the Princess when the Falcon came out of hyperspace and into the asteroid field that used to be the planet.

Remember, when the Empire caught the Falcon and brought it into the landing bay, they initially thought it had been abandoned shortly after take-off. So why would the plans be there if its occupants had disappeared?

They probably thought the whole thing was moot at that point. After Alderaan, they had a weapon that they now knew could be the planet-killer they had been promised. They turned their attention to finding the rebel base as quickly as possible so that they could destroy it before the plans were exploited.

So why is it that after they realized their mistake, the Empire allowed the Falcon to escape so that it would lead them to the hidden base? Why didn't they freak out that the plans were still out there? If they had just blown the Falcon out of the sky the moment it left the Death Star (which Leia was confident they absolutely could have done), it wouldn't have mattered if they found the Rebel base today or years later. The Death Star would still be around without its weakness known. Even Tarkin says they are taking a terrible risk in letting them go.

So really, the downfall of the Death Star was Darth Vader's impatience. Moreover, it was the Dark Side's total dominance over him at that point. In Empire, Yoda says, "Grave danger you are in. Impatient you are." when Luke is in a hurry to complete his training. More famously, he says, "Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice."

Vader wanted to rush into the fight. He wanted to end the Rebellion quickly. He was looking for a "long remembered day" that saw the end of Obi Wan and would soon see the end of the Rebellion. The Dark Side made him imprudent. It made him aggressive. It clouded his judgment. Combine that with the fact that Anakin was always a huge risk-taker before he became Darth Vader, and you had the perfect recipe for his hubris to come back and bite him in the ass.

Great points everyone. I think we can all agree now that Phantom is better than Clones. :p I'm so glad that's settled.

So here were are at 2 1/2 weeks and it's sitting at $440mil domestic + $350mill foreign for a total just under $800mill worldwide. So $1billion worldwide is still possible, but it might be tight getting there since the week day crowds will drop of dramatically.

...I still own all the original action figures, play sets, vehicles, etc...

Ok, you are now my favorite person. :notworthy: How in the world you had the foresight to save those and the restraint to not destroy them with fireworks is amazing to me. If you have the time, I'd love to see some photos should you ever break them out.

My ranking order:

4, 5, 6, 7, 3.5, 1, 3, 2.

R1 was very good. Second viewing pulled it down a little for me, but I enjoyed it very much. I think it may be the wife's favorite.

I borderline hated TFA, but I loved this movie. TFA ripped so much off of the original and just came across to me as lazy, lazy script writing. Could have been so much more. I loved this movie. Just re-read the whole thread and 100% agree with BIM's listing of favorites in order...and that's even with my disdain for TFA. Eps 1-3 were just awful to me. Didn't enjoy any of them. So happy to finally have a Star Wars movie I could love again!

The issues I had with this movie were around writing. The inconsistency they introduced to shoe horn in Vader was only saved by the last scene. The underdeveloped characters and utter waste of Forest Whitaker, the horrible one liner from Vader and the ridiculous switch that was really a switch. The usage of the Death Star again as the main threat.

I liked TFA characters better hands down despite the originality issues. The score was better and I was able to see the where are they now of some characters. Both movies are flawed. Both movies I loved but I give the edge to TFA.

Except for the new characters in TFA, Luke, Han, and Leia are in the same exact place as we left them in ROTJ. I really wish there was more development there. Especially after what we saw in the books. Very lazy and safe.

You had to read the whole thread to come to that conclusion?

What do you mean? Other than BB-8 having the secret information and the whole "another death star?! Oh Cmoooon!", what was specifically the same?

Because depending on how broad the definition, you can say that for all movies. All the fast and furious movies are the same. All the Expendable movies are the same. Same plot over and over.

But if you mean specific elements (like the BB-8/R2D2 thing) I can understand that

I liked TFA. Interesting characters. Funny.

The only thing I didn't like about TFA was that it had another Death Star. Wish it was something else they were attacking rather then it being a Death Star clone.

To be honest, I can't even remember anymore...but I DO remember telling dcr how much the copycat-ness of it infuriated me. What small part of my brain I did dedicate to remembering what I didn't like is that there were more than a few lines just lifted straight out of the original Star Wars (trilogy, even, perhaps), along with the BB-8/death star garbage.

...and I'm not talking about "I've got a bad feeling about this", either.

hahaha, that made me laugh 15 seconds in.

OK, ill say that was convincing. But also somebody really petty made that video.

androids going down a hallway? Blaster lasers hitting walls with storm troopers running? I defy you to be able to make any sci fi movie (let alone star wars) without those scenes.

Try making a car racing movie without a scene of the driver shifting gears. "Ripoff!" lol

Yeah nice attempt but there is a ton of cherry picking of scenes out of sequence and obviously the person who did the video doesn't realize that certain types of scenes (i.e. the opening scene with a ship coming into view is a Star Wars tradition). Some of the other comparisons are beyond weak.

Yes, TFA took a lot of flack for being so similar to SW, but like i said in that thread taking the safe route w/ the public was ok with me. After what happened with the prequels (and hiring JJ to a lesser extent) fans were hesitant and nervous. Imagine if TFA bombed with the fans and public in general, it could have killed the franchise.

By going the safe route, they brought the fans back and got just about everyone excited about SW again, as shown by ticket sales with both TFA and Rouge one. I really think, and hope, the next two saga movies give us something new.

But, in reality, this is another trilogy. Good vs bad. Sith vs Jedi. Light and dark. Empire/New Order vs Rebels/Resistance. How much 'new' stuff can there really be when those are at the core of the saga movies?
