Rolle on Sirius

Last question to Antrel Rolle on Sirius the other day is what he thinks about the cardinals and their chances.

I have to paraphrase but said that although they lost some good players they have great coaches and a lot of great players still there and people should not underestimate them. That they can win the division.

I would guess the draw of New York was huge. A lot of these guys have huge egos (no clue about Rolle's). So playing well in New York would mean more to an ego that playing well in Arizona.

I'm sure that the New York deal may have been structured a little better (more guaranteed money, or more money coming in earlier years), but I don't think you can underestimate the disrespect that the Cards have shown players when they become free agents. The Cardinals could absolutley have absorbed that #. Im glad they chose not to though. They upgraded and got a good young player in his place who has 3 years left on his deal.

Oh, you are right, technically they "could have" absorbed it, but I dont think anyone was under the delusion the Cards were going to.

That's fine, but it also came to that point in extension talks. Remember that the story at the beginning of the season was that Rolle was a good kid with an even head on his shoulders and that he'd take a market deal. The Cards did try to re-negoatiate, but they were in a position--like with the Fitz deal--where they were going to have to guarantee the money that Rolle already had coming to him (the earned escalator), and then the new deal.

When his agent found out what the market was going to be, Rolle's price went up. The Cards gambled that the market was inflated, and then they lost the gamble. Another in a long line of gambles that Rod Graves crapped out on.

The Cards tried to match New York's offer (allegedly), and then it came down to whether Rolle wanted to return to the team that said he wasn't worth the money, or the team that said that they wanted him this bad.

You should have had a clue about Rolle's ego when he continued to do back-flips in the end zone and got penalized when he fell to the ground---and still continued to do them despite the penalties incurred for unsportsmanlike conduct. This was a huge clue that his ego mattered much more than the team did.

Rolle made it very well known that he would much rather play on the east coast so that he could be near his family. If all things were equal, he was heading to NY based on that alone. I am sure he would have went to Miami over NY if the money were the same.

I kinda liked Rolle. The guy was dynamite exciting to watch the few times he had the ball on offense, or returning INT's.

Rolle is overpaid... There is no way he deserved bonus money based on elite corner money. He was failure as CB and we get an-- at worst-- even saftey for 1/3 the price...
