Roma accelerate talks with Gian Piero Gasperini for the managerial role
Roma have accelerated talks with Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini for the managerial position, as per a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Giallorossi have endured a tumultuous 2024/25 season, marked by several managerial changes.
Club legend Daniele de Rossi was sacked in September before being replaced by Ivan Juric.
However, Juric’s tenure was cut short two months later due to the stagnant results, with Roma appointing Claudio Ranieri as his successor.
Roma have experienced a change in fortunes under Ranieri, maintaining an unbeaten streak in Serie A since late December.
They have also won four league games on the trot and are currently seventh in the league table, only four points off the final Champions League spot.
The ex-Leicester City boss also inspired Roma to an impressive victory against Porto in the Europa League in the play-offs before losing to Athletic Bilbao in the round of 16.
Ranieri’s contract at Stadio Olimpico expires this summer, and Roma have identified Gasperini as the ideal option to lead their project.
Gasperini has grown into one of the most influential managers in Europe following his success at Atalanta.
He has transformed La Dea into one of the top-most sides in Italy, leading them to the Europa League glory last year.
Atalanta are also competing for Scudetto this season, trailing leaders Inter Milan only by six points at third place.
Roma are also said to be preparing a five-year contract for Gasperini, who has been in charge at Atalanta since 2016.
With Gasperini also being monitored by Juventus, Roma have also shortlisted alternative options for the managerial candidate.
They are keeping tabs on current Turkey head coach Vincenzo Montella and ex-Lazio gaffer Maurizio Sarri.
