You really believe that the players were thinking like a sorry team last season?

Or this off season for that matter?

I'm the only one, well there are probably others as well, who thinks the team is jinxed.

No, I don't think they were last year, but I'm not ready to say "uh oh, It's the ol' Cardinal s jinx again. S*** happens, it's all in how you deal with it.

I was with Mack until he said that they run a complicated offense at UT. Um... okay, Mack. I'm sure that Virginia wonders what on earth you're doing when they break film on you guys.

Well that's the idea isn't it? Having defenses trying to figure out what on earth you're doing on offense. :D

I felt the same way for the first 30 years I followed the team. But the last 15years of 5-11 seasons finally changed my mind.

However I am hopeful that the Cards finally having their own stadium for the first time in over 50 years will finally break the jinx.

FYI I read in this mornings paper that Young did NOT get a 6, it was misgraded as had been rumored before, and when he retook it, he got a 16. They said that anything below 20 is a red flag for a QB and the 16 may knock him down in the draft, that had the 6 been legit he may have fallen into the 2nd round. But one NFL scout said it's a mountain out of a molehill, he says everyone knew early on the 6 was incorrect but they leaked it to PFT because they all were trying to spread the word in the hopes that Young would drop and they could draft him.

Who knows, it is interesting though. Just like how Vernon Davis suddenly became a much better player by running such a fast 40. Amazing athlete but we already knew that didn't we?

Actually its completey fair. You arent goiing to be able to go out and "just make plays" in the NFL. You can bet you are going to be coached and coached some more. If it is somehting Young dosnt take to well then it is a serious red flag. It was concerning enough for two major sports professionals to call it into question.

Actually you and Cowheard are taking a small snipet and it is out of context. Read Texas Monthly December edition they have an 8 page article/interview with Mac Brown and it gets into this very thing.

He states that it wasnt just VY he started not coaching it was his entire team. In essence, he stopped taking the pressure of not winning the "big game" at Texas, so hard and he told his staff to get more "in touch" with the person not the athlete. Understand where they come from, their music, their habits etc and learn to listen to them....sounds corny but the pressure at Texas to win the big game was enormous and a lot of alumni hated when he signed a 10 year contyract extension. So he and his staff did this and apparently it worked. They quit "over coaching" the team, they quit driving them into the ground with 2-adays in August etc,....part of that plan was to allow VY to become the QB he was as a highschool senior-the one they recruited- and then start introducing a small pieces of instruction that would make him a better QB.

It isnt that they just quit "coaching " him it is that they went about it a different way. Instead of changing him drastically they allowed him to go back to how he knew how to play and slowly start introducing small pieces of instruction-footwork, progressions etc.

Apparently it has worked since his play has elevated tremendously the last 2 years

I can see that Young's massively talented, but he's got the same--if not more--question marks around him that Michael Vick does, only he doesn't seem to have the measureables that vaulted Vick from "electrifying collegate player" to #1 pick in the draft: mainly foot speed and arm strength. If Young doesn't run a 4.6 40 or better at UT's Pro Day, I'll bet that he floats down to the Cards at #10.

Except Vick had no where near the passing pedigree as Young and run just as "simple" an offense. Vick and Young are comparable b/c Vick is much faster but Youngs stats/measruables are much better. No one thought Vick was gonna come into the NFL and be a "passer", but I think VY can be just that.

I hope if he's there we pass on Mr. Stoooooopid. Not sure if he's smart enough to learn to take a snap from under center.

THe Wunderlic score is much ado about nothing! Who cares what the score was. This is football not a audition to become a professor of theology at Harvard.

This is so lame IMO...

Yeah, but everyone knew that Vick had a cannon for an arm very early on in the process. It was just a question of getting his footwork and accuracy together--which hasn't happened yet.

I know that you're sold on VY's arm strength, but I'm not quite there yet.

I dont know about "sold" but I just havent seen anything that tells me he has a weak arm ... what is it that you have seen?

I just haven't seen a ton of deep balls from him. It seemed like Texas ran a lot of inside crosses but I don't think I saw a deep out in any of the games that I watched. It's odd because with that O-line in front of him, he should have had time to huck the ball deep all day. Their offense seemed to have a lot of catch-and-runs.

It's not a huge red flag for me; I'm saying that in comparison to Michael Vick, who may have the strongest arm in the NFL, I don't think it really measures up. But neither does Peyton Manning's. If he's at 10, I jump all over it and order his jersey in the new alternate black before they finish his highlight reel.

Some people here would have tried to change Earl "The Pearl" Monroe. Hey Earl whats with all that spinning? You know the quickest way between points is a straight line. Again sometimes what makes a great player is that he doesn't always do it the way the coaches think.

Ii'll give you an example. I just read an article about a basket ball coach that called timeout with his team down 1 point with .7 seconds left.
He diagramed a play for one of his players to come off a screen and take a jump shot. When the point guard took the ball out he faked to the shooter and hit the screener rolling to the bucket to win the game. After the game in the media interviews they asked the coach about the great play he drew up. He smiled and said that as the team was leaving the huddle the point guard said the he!! with that crap, I'm going to fake the throw and I want the screener to roll to the basket and I'll hit him for the easy layup and thats what happened.

This was in college and the point guard is now starting in the NBA. After the coach got done telling the story he just smiled again and said great players make smart coaches. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I saw a few deep fly patterns he completed, but for the most part you are probably right. I dont know that I paid that much attention to it. I have seen him throw a bunch of medium "outs" though and that is fairly telling of arm strength.

I guess I dont have that much concern about it. Is it as strong as Vick's? Of course not but honestly-like you alluded to- whose is?

Yeah. I remember having this conversation last offseason when they released the new unis. Since black is the new accent color (instead of blue, I suppose), I'm guessing that the "alternate unis" (which Michael Bidwill said they'd come out with for the new stadium) will be black with solid red numbers outlined in white with white sleeves and red accents. Similar to what the Lions wear for their alternates, only with red and about a thousand times cooler.

Surely this will call Pantone out to help us consider this.

Ryan Leaf had all of the prototypical NFL physical attributes. He won lots of games in college, scored a 27 on the Wonderlic test and sucked more than any NFL player has ever sucked, on the field, in the locker room, and in public.

As for the deep out just go watch the game winning TD pass against Ohio State.

Mabe he threw the test on purpose hoping to drop his draft stock so that he could be taken at # 10 by his dream team THE Arizona Cardinals

Wasn't that a fade? That's a totally different pass. Joey Harrington could throw a great fade and fly. Very catchable.

I like Vince Young at #10. I've said it multiple times on this thread. I'm not sure what you're arguing. That the draft is a crap shoot? There are better prospects at #2, #3 overall. I'm not sure I would take him in the Top 5.

K9's Top 5 as of 2/28/06 (Subject to immediate change as necessary):
1. Reggie Bush
2. Matt Lienart
3. D'Brickashaw Ferguson
4. Mario Williams
5. A.J Hawk

It wasn't a fade. It was an out pattern. A sweet throw to the front of the end zone.

What I'm arguing is for people not to make the mistake of underating a guy because he isn't a prototypical NFL QB. And overrating a guy because he is.

People jumped on Chris Simms because, even though he was a typical pocket passer, he didn't "produce" in the big games. Now here comes Vince Young who stepped up HUGE in big games and people knock him because he isn't a prototype pocket passer.
