An interesting in-house power struggle on Hardy Drive that will play out over the next two weeks is whether or not Michael Bidwill has the power to oust Russ Grimm. He's clearly lost his luster as a head coaching candidate, and he's failed to improve the Cards' offensive line over the last four years.
If Grimm returns next season, it's the number one symptom that Whis hasn't learned his lesson about looking at the present instead of past production.
Isn't that the definition of a power struggle? If MB decides that Whis staying is more important than Grimm leaving, then Whis wins.Power struggle my butt. If MB decides that Grimm needs to go, he goes. If Whiz refuses, he doesn't have a choice. If Whiz can't handle it, he goes too. That's IF MB has the brains to realize he needs to go, and IF he has the huevos.

What is the irresponsible choice? not firing Whiz?Well, that's the thing, right? This front office isn't going to fire Whis with three years left on his deal--and that's probably an irresponsible choice. So is Whis going to stand up for Grimm to the point where they both stay or they both go?
Where the rubber meets the road is if Whis can listen to himself about looking at what players are doing NOW instead of looking at what they've done for you in the past. If he can apply that same perspective to his buddies on his staff, then I'll see that he learned something from this season.
If he can only realize that Joey Porter is finished five months after many of us did...?

I didn't think you were. I think you are right abou the coords.Firing Whis would be the irresponsible choice. He's two years removed from an NFL Championship.
As much as people don't believe it, I'm not in the camp who wants to fire Whis. I just think that he's squandered the goodwill that he built over the last two or three seasons with obviously stupid roster and playcalling choices.
If I were Bidwill, I'd show him pictures of Miller and Grimm and say that you can keep one of these guys. But if you fire Whis now, then you're sending a terrible message to the rest of the league, and I'm not sure you can bring in a guy who's as good or better, nor be able to afford to put a quality staff behind him.
Sounds like an issue built atop a pile of speculation (which makes it a fake issue).
1. What "power struggle?" Does anyone have any evidence that there is one?
2. If there isn't a power struggle, then the issue of Wiz vs. Michael B with regard to Grimm is a false one (within that context).
However, that doesn't mean that the issue of whether Grimm's feet need to be held to the fire isn't a legitimate one all by itself.
I don't know borscht about coaching an offensive line, and I have no clue as to what the inside-baseball is about how Russ is doing on a day to day or week to week basis. What I do know is (a) Russ has a stellar reputation and (b) based on results, our offensive line play - at least to me - grades out pretty awful.
Meanwhile, I look at Indy and NE rebuild their offensive lines with the Jeff Saturdays and Logan Mankins of the world, while the Cardinals can't seem to run the ball or protect their passers very well.
So the question for me going forward is: "What's it going to take to make us healthy on our O-line - New coach(es)? New Veteran Players? Development of Our Younger Players? the Draft?
I do feel that - based on his previous track record - Russ Grimm, at the very least, deserves the benefit of the doubt. But it doesn't mean he shouldn't be under a magnifying glass until the problem gets fixed.
It does make me smile a little thinking back on those bone crushing hits DA took, I guess he did earn a little bit of the money. The previous track record of getting QBs murdered and not being able to run the ball for the past four years here? Or the track record of getting QBs murdered and being able to run the ball five years ago in Pittsburgh?
Exactly my thought.

How do you know Mike Bidwill wants Grimm ousted? I personally think they don't want to make any coaching changes this year.

If the Bidwill's are happy with their investment in Grimm, then this franchise really his hopeless.
I agree that they don't want to make any coaching changes this year. But if they're being honest with themselves about how to improve this 5-11 mess, they need to make coaching changes.
To me, replacing Miller and/or Grimm are more essential to improving the team than replacing Bill Davis.
Good point.I personally don't think its our coaching staffs abilities thats the problem. Its the fact that our players are just not that good. Now if you want to blame Grimm for having Levi Brown at tackle, or blaming the organization for making him a top 10 pick then I'm with you. I just look at our roster and see not enough influx of young talented, explosive talent.
