I think Wilks can have a Bowles type of impact if Keim doesn't set him up for failure by not making drastic improvements to this roster.

Shurmur was ARZ's top choice but they are not going to admit that after he is going to end up in NY. Not knowing the details but maybe they offered him a contract a while ago and he wanted to take all his interviews first and just fell in love with NY or maybe Keim wanted to take all his interviews and just waited too long for Shurmur.

We dialed in on him immediately. I’d buy your narrative if we were just getting around to a first interview.

Stop the panic.

If he was really our top choice all along, and we went through first interviews with EVERYONE so far, why hasn’t he gotten the job yet?

I like Wilks and would be optimistic if he’s hired but to say with any kind of certainty that he was their top choice is pretty ridiculous considering there’s literally nothing stopping them from making him their coach right now.

I'm not even saying he was their "top choice," but that through the process he could have emerged as the favorite. I keep going back to business references, but when you hire someone, you generally don't just hire them after looking at their resume and getting a phone interview in. The NFL isn't just entertainment, it's a business.

Especially important is that this isn't one person's decision. Keim and MB both have to agree on who this person is going to be. You don't make a snap judgement, you take it one step at a time.

Keep in mind, I'd be singing a totally different tune if this was Wilks' first interview and we'd called him a couple weeks after the guys we interviewed were already rumored to be locked in.

a guess.....
ever interview for a position and they ask if you would accept a different position if you dont get the one you interviewed for?

Perhaps they want DFlip as OC for Wilks and they are holding off until they get him in for a second interview and bounce the idea off of him

sales companies often do that. place an ad for a manager and use it to fill out their staff.because they want people with aspirations. But in this case it could make sense... DFlips resume could use another year or two as a coordinator

This is a good point too.

Imagine the scenario where they REALLY like Flip, and REALLY like Wilks. The perfect scenario would be to acquire both, right? But what if he comes in tomorrow and says he's not willing to move his family across the country to be OC when he could join Shurmur's staff in NY and still be promoted? What's Wilks' backup plan? We don't know any of this as casual fans.

Remember, the coaching staff isn't just one guy. The Cards could think Wilks & Flip > Bettcher & McCoy & Pagano, but could feel that Wilks & Todd Haley (Just an example) < Bettcher & Co.

I mean, there's a chance this entire wait hinges on the decision Flip is going to make about his future.

I just posted some research in the coaching tree thread. The NY Giants were under the impression that either DeFillipo or Norv Turner would be Wilks OC.... I cant see where they have ever coached together though.... I think they are shooting for Wilks, DFlip, Bettcher...
in regards to DFlip,... they could just give him the assistant HC title just like Wilks currently has in Carolina. would basically mean nobody can sign him away without making him a HC, last step in the ladder.

The rules changed in the past few years anyways - you're no longer allowed to take a coach from another team for a promotion unless the team gives them the go-ahead. The only time that rule can be broken is for the Head Coach title. So, for example, we/NYG wouldn't be able to hire Flip for OC in most cases, but his contract happens to be up.

I can agree that the hold up is because these candidates are pretty close to each other...my fear is that is because none of them are very special.

Maybe my opinion changes after free agency and the draft, but as of right now, we are looking at a top 10 draft pick in 2019.

Given we have no QB on the roster, I think this is a given at this point.

I think that D learning a new system next year will start out slow and cost us a game or two before they figure things out and come on strong towards end of the season.

You'd think DJ should significantly help the Offense next year but with the potential turnover on the OL, plus major holes with the TE and WR group, I don't know that our Offense will be dialed in enough to win close games.

Can't wait to see who our OC will be.

Respectfully Suggest...

...that - whenever the Cardinals are in competition for a highly-rated coach or star free-agent player - ASFN should appoint a number of its readers "Local Correspondents" whose job would be to hang out in trendy restaurants and watering holes , lying in wait for any sightings of player, coach or members othe Cardinal management team. We could call them our "Local Ground Crew. (Hey, it's only money). Camera optional.
