That's why they used him as a DH Saturday... Didn't stay for the whole game, but long enough to see him lead off with a homer and get a line drive single to left in his second at bat.

I read on some sports site, that they thought Hairston would compete for a roster spot next spring. I don't think so. I think Hairston is at least a year away.

He will probably start the year out in Tucson, maybe even El Paso again. He had a lousy year last year at El Paso because of his back problems. Hopefully his back problems won't reappear again for the rest of his career. It will be interesting to see his progression.

Everybody says he will hit and hit for power but, his defense doesn't seem to be improving. Maybe they try him in the outfield in the future.

How about this?

I don't think Scott Hairston's future is at 2nd base. Either he'll get nicked up b/c of the DP pivot, his heart isn't in it, whatever. It's a tough defensive position and it probably will affect his offensive. It's silly to make him wait until he reaches "Babyback" age.

Same with Chad Tracy. He's produced every step of the way up to & including AAA. Honestly, he would have been a better option last year platooning with Matt Williams to ease him in. He was good as Alex Cintron and much better than Matt Kata as a prospect.

So here's what we should do. Wait until Shea has his usual good April, then trade him when his value is high. Move Chad Tracy into the 3B spot. No, it won't be full-time b/c Bob Brenly rotates IF like Craig Counsell. That will take pressure off him.

Then move Scott Hairston to a slightly easier position at AAA: either 3B or CF. That's right, two prospects at 3B. Why? Because there's no guarentee that prospects will make it. Also, competition makes players work harder. That's a good message.

A bad message? You can produce forever in the minors but we'll block you (Chad Tracy, Lyle Overbay) for other reasons.

Works for me. Shea does not impress. Maybe somebody else will take him.

It seems like the Phillies could use an upgrade at 3rd

David Bell: .195, 4 HR, 37 RBI
