For some reason, the more I think about it, the more stunned I am. I have no idea why, but it seems weird that they cut him.

I liked the single-bar and the mustache, but not the performance the last couple of years.

But man, he was one of the best when he was in his prime.

Here's to you, over-the-hill, single-bar mustachioed punter with a generic-sounding jersey.

I second these thoughts... pretty much my feelings towards Player... One thing I always liked was he would go after it if he was the last man to have to 'try' and make a tackle.

For a former Pro Bowler I think he took more than his share of grief (much of it due to the single bar, IMO). He has lost something off his fastball now, but Player was very good for a long time.

It will definitely seem strange seeing another punter back there.

Say "goodbye" to the single bar in the NFL. Player was the last player authorized to wear it, so he will forever be the answer to a trivia question.

especially with so little fanfare, before the last preseason game. He's been an institution and it seems like the end came so anticlimactically. I know, I know, he's a punter, but for me he's one of the faces of the franchise. I know some might not like that, but I thought his uniqueness was cool.

What will we see first:

Someone asking that trivia question, or a thread asking why we didn't trade Player three years ago for a draft pick?

New holder:

Boldin

excellent hands, and gives a running and passing threat off a fake

Good Call!

Let opponents spend more practice time preparing for what Q might do.

I’m sure this coaching staff has plan and knows who the holder will be.
(Denny would have cut him because he ate the last chili dog and then worry about a replacement later).

The new holder will be the lead singer of Wilson Phillips--at least for one more day.

Simple answer to that. None of the other teams had a helmet with a single bar face mask.

I would like to be the first a-hole to say "I told you so," though. We should have cut Player last year and kept Capshaw.

Well done. But I think if we could get Hootie to hold for the Cards, he would take us to the promised land.

Wish it was for Capshaw.

I've never understood the man-love for Capshaw. No other team took a chance on him last season and this preseason, with St. Louis, he has punted 3 times for a net average of a whopping 34.75 yards!

Capshaw's main attraction seemed to always be, "He's not Scott Player" and nothing else.

We would have, but they couldn't contact Darius and time was no friend. There's nothing Bidwill could do.

Wait, I just realized that the new guy's last name is "Barr."

That is funny to me.

"It" being the sidelines, right? The guy did everything possible to make an "attempt" at a tackle with out actually making contact. Rackers on the other hand seems to relish getting the chance to hit someone.

He was a lifelong Cardinal (that says alot) and he punted very well for us over the years.

Was it time for him and the fu man chu to be replaced...probably. But it happens to them all.

I think this may be a sign that Whis identified one of our weak links in punt coverage and is making a statement to the team.

Thanks Scott.

Player the punter should have been gone two years ago. He only stuck around because he is a great holder.

I liked the guy. But, I'm glad we upgraded that position as field position is so important in the NFL. I wish him well, he played for us for going on 10 years. He sure was different with the bars and the old fashion helmet, sometimes different is good.

Thanks Scott Player!

Were Rackers' problems last season mental? If they were, why the hell would they do something like this?

I'm going to throw out a crazy theory that he was either completely unable or unwilling to execute a fake.
Either that or one preseason's worth of not making jack crap for effort on coverage was enough to send him packing. I mean no wonder our punt coverage sucks so bad, the dude is invisible after he punts.
