He's probably lost a step or two with the all the below the belt injuries but that's a good price. By far our most talented LB instantly until DWash is back.

Maybe, but Okafor at least deserves a mention, if you're expanded the conversation to all LB positions.

Rand Getlin @Rand_Getlin
Source: LB Sean Weatherspoon will sign a one-year deal with the #AZCardinals.

Mike Garafolo @MikeGarafolo
One-year deal with the Cardinals for LB Sean Weatherspoon that @Rand_Getlin mentioned expected to be worth close to $4 million, source says.

now its a one year deal. low risk high reward signing. Though if he plays well we might lose him after one year.

Well, if he has a good season... I hope they do a new contract before the season is completed because these one year contracts are starting to bug me when a guy pans out lol

Yeah I still hope we keep Cro

but I guess thats why one year deals are what they are. If they don't pan out it doesn't hurt you in the future but if it does work out its extremely hard to retain that player beyond a single season unless you overpay him.

Either way I actually hope they keep doing them as it seems like they get one or two really good players a year at a really discounted price on the prove it deals.

And it also makes that player work that much harder as they want to cash in the following year.

Hopefully he can stay healthy because he is an animal when he is. Was definitely the player I wanted most in that draft.

they could make a 2 years contract
with more gurantee money in his first year
1 year for a talented player i dont like even if he is unjury prone

I've wanted the guy since he was draft eligible. Let's hope he can stay healthy.

Saying the Cardinals will sign Weatherspoon to a 1 year 4 million dollar contract.

Sounds good the way the FO is structuring the contract. I like the one year prove it deals.

But who plays next to him while DWash is suspended? Minter? He was really bad last year.

1 year deals can be dangerous. If he has a great, injury free year, that would make resigning him for the following year very difficult. At least get him for 2 just in case with most of the guaranteed money for this year. This way if you have to let him go for next year you're not out much.

The only logic with one year contracts to me demands then that the team gives a one year contract so they can draft the very position the free agent is filling as a grace period for the rookie, or it just becomes a revolving door with no sustaining solution that is in constant flux

I tend to agree with your thinking but maybe the Cardinals do not get him otherwise if he wants to take a chunk of money and re-enter free agency again next season. The player would need to have confidence in his ability to improve his value.

As Capt. Obvious would say, "It takes both parties to agree to any deal". We have no idea whether the Cards had interest in a 2-year deal or Spoon.

This is another Cromartie/Dansby deal that should work out for the Cards. Between Weatherspoon and Washington, we should get at least 16 games of production from them combined, and anything more is gravy.

Folks don't like these one year deals, but it is a great way to keep your roster filled with players you are drafting. You aren't committed to bad fits in terms of production or leadership. You don't have people taking over your locker room. Now, Keim needs to get more consistent production from the draft, but this isn't a bad way to build a team.

Yes Captain Obvious, however, this seems to have worked well for Keim over the past couple of off seasons if attention has been paid.

I dunno. It feels like a terrible way to "build a team", but it's not a bad way to keep a rental while the team gets built underneath. The challenge is that you have to keep hitting on these guys every year, or else you run into a problem when they don't come through.

I guess I failed to state that clearly. It is a great plan to build your team through the draft, and then use free agency for mostly short-term stop-gap moves while you do so. When a legitimate player (ala Veldheer) is available, go for him, but other than that, look to temporarily plug holes.

Exactly and especially with guys who have an injury history like Weatherspoon. Also something that I think some people are overlooking is that it is also quite possible that Weatherspoon doesn't want a 2 year deal with very little guaranteed in the 2nd year. If he has a good year this year than he is going to want to have a chance at getting paid next year. Even then however it still might be possible to resign him without overpaying too much because that injury history will still be a factor for any team trying to sign him.

Not sure people realize how good this guy is. Its a one year deal and who knows if hell play 16 games. But he is better than Dansby when he is on the field. Youll see.

The key to these one year deals if they work out. Is to get a stud for that year you can still develop a draft pick. If that stud stays healthy we get bonus and he gets the good money. Meanwhile we have a trained rookie. So far it has worked very well.
