Classy. . both of you. . .

I think what they are referring to is you being the only person in the free world that thinks Dirk is an "above average" defender.

I can see homerism saying that he is a decent defender, but above-average?

Dirk couldn't guard his way out of a paper bag :)

At least we can agree that Dirk is a very tall man and he is not slow. That alone gives Dirk some credibility in terms of "defense". Just like when Bradley stands on the court. He can at least stop some guards throwing some easy rainbow shots and provide some "presence"; whether he can block or not is another story.

Presence-wise, Dirk isn't bad. He is tall and pretty quick. He can't play 1 on 1 D but he does have pretty good supporting defense with his long arms. I've seen plenty of times where he reaches in to steal the ball/pass. Foul or not, I don't care. You gotta be dirty to play good defense.

decent & above average are synonymous IMO. . . and there are more that feel the same (non Maverick fans). I'm by no means saying he's a world better, but the guy is one of a couple of people (Marion included) that had 100 blocks & 100 steals in a season (not last season but the season before, he feel a couple steals short this season). So statistically he does things on D.

Now, overall, on man defense. . . he obviously could improve a lot. . . but he has improved a bunch. . to say that he's the same defender he is now that he was 3 years ago is abusrd. . he's improved a lot.

Will he ever be a lock down defender? No. Can he be more than adequate defender? It's my opinion that he already is.

Is that a touch of homerism. . . probably. . .

Well, first off, you can't have credibility yet when you only have 33 posts, so that's understandable.

Second, saying Dirk is an above average defender pretty much shows you lack credibility :)

Just relax...people call each other out all the time, but if you start coming back with "you're a prick", it's a quick way to have to find another board.

He defended well on the last shot of the game. . . and that's all that mattered. .

How do you expect to prove something from a video that small?

Looked like a bad pass to me...

Doesn't make him an above-average defender.

So by that logic, does average mean less than decent? Decent and above average are not synonomous IMO.

Geez. Ask Dirk and he'd probably tell you he sucks on D. Really doesn't matter much when his O is that good, though.

Dirk would rather play defense with his hands. The only time he shows any ability at all is when Steve Nash tries to break his ankles. Dirk would rather die on the court than get beat by his former drinking buddy.

Isn't it just a matter of time before Dirk sprains his ankle?

Dirk and defense

As a new member and a big suns fan since Barkley was traded from my former team the 76ers(the suns replaced my sixers as my fav after Barkley left, Dr. J retired) I will offer the opinion that Dirk's defensive shortcomings are similar to those of Sir Charles. They are tweener players. Physically unable to guard power forwards in the post(lack of height, and lack of physical strength) and not enough foot speed to guard small forwards. I do think that Dirk trys much harder and is a better team defender but I fall short of saying that he is a good defender. Both these guys create(d) such matchup problems that their defensive liabilities are acceptable. The problem is that they need good shot blockers to back them up from the weak side, much like Larry Bird did. Charles never had this in phoenix as the shotblockers(Oliver Miller and Mark West did not generally have the foot speed to cover the holes) Dirk has had the same problem except for shawn bradley, who unfortunately was an offensive liability and a poor one-on-one defender. Thus the strategy against the mavs in th past was to force bradley into one on one(he was foul prone as we all know) and not defend him.

Well, since you don't trust us, trust it from another source, Dirk sucks at d.

"6. "Dirk Nowitzki tries defensively, but he's just not very good."

(Actually, he's atrocious. He's a train wreck. He couldn't be worse. I'm getting angry.).

ESPN, I am sure if you really wanted to research it, any idiot would be able to tell you that. Your myopia is beyond ridiculous, you should be a Kings fan.

You can come up with statistics that would prove pretty much anything. Use your brain kid, it doesn't take a genius to see that Dirk is an overhyped small forward with the body of a weak power forward. The "Dirk is top 5 player" bandwagon cleared out nicely after the playoffs last year. If you don't remember, Marion completely shut him down, and showed how one dimensional he truly is. An exceptional shooter? Without a doubt. Unfortunately, he does little else to make his teams win. Go over the game film of the playoffs from last year. See your "leader" berating his teammates over defense, which is almost laughable. From where I sit, we worked your team last year, and even without Amare, we would still beat you in the playoffs.

In conclusion:

Suns > Mavs.

understand?
