The Yankees come to Arizona hurting.
NEW YORK -- With injured pitchers Kevin Brown and Mike Mussina limited to playing catch, Tanyon Sturtze will make his first start for the Yankees on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, closer Mariano Rivera joined the team's list of ailing star pitchers. Rivera was unavailable to pitch Sunday in the Yankees' 6-5, 12-inning victory over the San Diego Padres.
"I was not going to use Mo today," manager Joe Torre said. "He was a little uncomfortable. He had a little tightness in his back."
Torre wasn't too worried about Rivera. "I would be surprised if he's not ready to go Tuesday," he said.
Torre also wanted to see how Brown's troublesome back responded to treatment since he had to leave his outing after two ineffective innings Wednesday against Colorado with spasms. Torre was able to put off a decision on his rotation for the series in Arizona because the Yankees have an off day Monday. Jose Contreras will start Tuesday in place of Brown, on his normal rest, and Sturtze will pitch Wednesday in Mussina's spot. Torre still has not announced a starter for Thursday.
Brown and Mussina each played catch before the Yankees faced the Padres on Sunday, and they reported progress. "It's one step in the right direction," Brown said.
Sturtze is 1-0 for New York with a 4.15 ERA in five relief appearances spanning 13 innings since being acquired from Los Angeles on May 15.
