our situation I'm gad we have a healthy Minor. The guy has played in 3 whole games. He has not hurt us and is working hard. It takes time for a essentially 1st year player to feel comfortable. There are many better in the league, but we have Minor and I hope he gets better soon.

Cards main defensive objective, as said by BA, is to shut down the run game. Minter is in there for his run defense and the Cards are 4th in the league against the run. I'm okay with him as he is still very early in his development.

1. Kevin Minter, ILB. It's probably not time to put the "bust" label on the thumper who doesn't thump anyone, but it's probably time to stop pretending that Minter is suddenly going to become a top inside linebacker in the NFL. If that was going to happen, it probably would have happened by now.

Pointed this out in another thread... Virtually said the same thing - that, while we might not be able to label him a "bust", he is a clear disappointment. He is a nose-tackle in a linebacker's body. Totally sucks in the open field and truly has zero cover ability. He missed a TON of tackles yesterday when one on one in the open field. Yet, in the run game he is solid.
Overall, he is very, very close to falling into the bust category as far as I'm concerned...

Agreed, Minter's performance, or lack thereof, is extremely concerning and this team is really behind the 8ball with their ILBs and OLBs.

I'm actually really impressed with Bucannon. His ability to assimilate LB and S responsibilities has been impressive. He hasn't shone in a ton of areas I agree, but his usuage an versatility as a rookie has been amazing in my eyes. He plays smart, which showed when he took down Kap in the open field yesterday, he doesn't make stupid penalties, and he is around so many plays. If you watch the Jefferson sack at the end of the game, I believe you will see Bucannon holding that hole open.

He hasn't been Eric Reid or Kenny Vaccaro, but you can argue that he hasn't been given a chance to be because he is also having to fill in for Daryl Washington.

Actually, I'm pretty happy about Bucannon's play as a rookie. He's a more finished product and better against the run than Daryl Washington was his first season. He's not as dynamic as Washington, but he's arguably more consistent at making his reads, being in the right place, etc., etc.

I agree with you that it's unfair to hang a label on Bucannon that he's not making plays. If anything he's making it difficult to slot up back into the traditional SS role, in part because Minter's been such a letdown.

Well, it's almost certainly Minter's 40% of the snaps per game that is giving the Cards run defense that lofty perch. What utter nonsense.

Minter isn't even that good against the run.

What's utter nonsense is jumping to conclusions about a player 3 games into his playing career.

I believe that he's 19 games into his playing career. He just could only earn 1 defensive snap in his first 16 games as a high draft pick--as I said, higher than Daryl Washington.

I'm not even arguing that Minter can't be good in a very limited role. I'm just saying show me a play as a defender when Kevin Minter looked good, not just running onto a pile 2 seconds after the whistle is blown.

Minter doesn't fit, especially in today's game. The thumper ILB is a dinosaur position, much like the blocking FB. Yes a 2nd round pick shouldn't be a situational player.

I also agree about Stanton...I think he's a FA in 2015, wonder if he will get some nibbles to be a starter or possibly price himself out of AZ.

Again, never was a fan of a situational player in Niklaus in the 2nd. Didnt we just sign the same player in Carlson in FA?

IMO Goodwin is just a figurehead as OC because we all know who's calling the plays & making the offensive decisions. :D

Good stuff though.

You people do realize Nicklas is still learning the TE position and he has a upside? As for Carlson ..he has missed parts of seasons due to injuries so why not draft a young TE to groom?
BA says he prefers a block first TE.

He's 3 games into playing(not going to get into the whole being behind KD thing as it's been well documented). He may turn out to be terrible, he may turn out to be good. Making assumptions about a 2nd round pick after 3 games of being on the field(is that better?) is pointless.

Lots of higher drafted ILB's have seen limited action in their 1st year. Lawrence Timmons was used sparingly. On the other hand, many have played extensively from the start. Every situation is different. Either way, in actual playing time, you can't judge in any situation, after 3 games.

EDIT: Also, if I remember right, you were very critical of Dwash, who plays an entirely different position, early on in his career as well.

When can you judge? 4 games? 12?

At this rate, he's going to be on his 3rd contract by the time you feel comfortable coming to some conclusions.

Is it safe to say that he didn't come out of the gate like his hair was on fire?

If he's struggling late in the year and showing no signs of progressing, I'd start to show some concern. It'd be nice if he was making 7-10+ tackles a game but like I used in the Timmons example, he had 11 tackles his 1st year and started only 2 of his first 32 games as a 1st round pick and he's turned out just fine.

Parmele was involved in 1 snap. Is that really a fair criticism?

Probably because it was a huge play and even the announcers wondered why they would give the ball to a guy they just claimed a couple of days earlier.

Taylor isn't Barry Sanders but he gets positive yardage and on short yardage plays he's been pretty good. Putting Parmalee in there was just weird, and it didn't work although we got it on 4th down anyways.

3. Drew Stanton, Quarterback. People who somehow think that Drew Stanton is a legitimate NFL quarterback after this team may not watch a lot of other NFL teams. Drew Stanton is playing like a top-shelf backup quarterback. He completed 55.8% of his passes at home when he's been working with these guys for two weeks straight. That's not good enough in the long term, but it was plenty good enough yesterday.

Someone doesn't agree: http://www.arizonasportsfans.com/vb/f4/adam-scheins-take-on-cardinals-win-212865.html#post3046690

K9 is going to take some lumps every time he names a goat after a victory. And I disagree with his goats too.

My goats of the game:

Fitz: That fumble could have cost us, but since it didn't you get a pass. Also, that 25 yard catch was nails.

Ted Larsen: Weakest OL of the day. Penalty could have been killer. I am not calling for Cooper to start yet because the unit is coming together nicely as a whole, but Larsen was the weak link.

Cro: You drop an easy pick 6 and then get hurt? C'mon man!

(Okay, that last one was a joke but he is my biggest concern coming out of this game right now)

larsen is also going to get a personal foul one of these games for running in late and hitting guys near the pile. I hate guys that do that, Anthony Davis of the 49ers is notorious for that(didn't play) but Larsen did it about 5 times yesterday.

Timmons came on to a team rich with LBers, not one desperate for them like we are this year.

Here is the issue CBUS, Minter can't get on the field.

I go to the games and watch him up close...There is very little, if anything at all, that indicates he has the athletic ability to be a regular starter in the NFL. His instincts seem non-existent. He has zero cover skills and is horrendous in open-field tackling.
As I have said before, he is a nose-tackle in a LB body... He is solid against the run, and sadly, that is the absolute best that can be said about him.

He is on the field when the situation calls for it. RB's have carried the ball 56 times against the Cards out of 190 plays, or 29%. I'm sure all those haven't been on 1st or 2nd down, which are the more likely running downs. I'm going to guess KM has been in the lineup for a large majority of those run plays(I guess I could be wrong but am not looking it up) and that's what his role is on this team. Solid against the run is his exact reason for seeing the field.

I don't know why people would expect him to be in on passing situations. He wasn't drafted for his coverage skills. Either way, it's been 3 games.

And he's on the field playing his role this year. Like Timmons, the Cards didn't need him to see the field either last year.

This is a lot of word salad that throws a lot of uncorrelated stats and adds up to nothing.

Minter isn't even on the field on first and second down. He'll go whole series where he doesn't see the field. It's not that he doesn't add anything in the passing game, it's that he's an active liability. He doesn't even come on the field for A-gap blitzes because we'd rather play Bucannon.

It's folly to suggest that "KM has been in the lineup for a large majority of those run plays" unless the defense somehow knows what play the offense is going to call, and then run Minter onto the field. Utter balderdash.
