Since the game isn't that far off. SF defensively is looking horrible, they have real injury problems at an already thin LB spot. they are a 3-4 team but have switched twice and are now allegedly a 4-3 team. Brandon Moore in one week was starting LOLB, backup MLB, starting LB, and now backup again. Nolan says he needs more size on defense right now and is going 4-3 due to injuries, Moore may be the best pass rusher and will play alot, but won't start in the base defense. The secondary is struggling because Tony Parrish has not fully recovered from his leg injury last year and is noticeably slower this year. The CB's, Spencer everyone says has had a good camp, beyond that it's panic time.

Who knows nobody tells the truth but I sure get the impression they're going to have one of the worst defenses in the NFL when the season starts. It woulkd be nice to have a win under our belts before we go play at Seattle, we have a pretty tough stretch of 4 after SF with only the Rams(defense sucks) appearing weak. After SF we play at Seattle, Rams at home, at Atlanta and then KC at home. Would be really nice to come out of that 3-2 so wins against SF and the Rams would be huge. Then you just have to steal one win from Seattle, Atlanta or KC.

You know, when you read other boards where the fans are attributing everything to vanilla game planning by their team, full game planning by their opponents ("...did you see how much they blitzed!!"), you realize how utterly pathetic it sounds and how delusional it is.

One one of the Niner boards, there is one thread speculating that the head coaches desire is to sandbag and surprise the Cards in the opener, and not everyone disagrees with this.

I agree, Russ. I try and follow SF pretty closely also and they look to be really bad this year, especially at the beginning of the season.

There is no excuse for us not winning in week #1.

BTW, Vegas has us as a 7 1/2 to 8 point favorite vs SF at the moment.

That's the sort of stuff we used to say a lot too during some of Macs and Tobins preseasons. Turns out we weren't fooling anybody.

They are what they are. And we are what we are. (until they or we aren't).

Trash talk and prognostications are not reality (and can be compared to using an episode of the Simpson to "prove" a metaphysical or life's lesson point).

To put things in perspective, yes, teams hide stuff during preseason. Yes, they tend to focus - at various degrees depending on team - on criteria other than winning. But the players they have still play the game, and you can sometimes glean interesting info about whether they suck or not - and at what?

For every team that looked like a well-oiled machine during preseason and continued to play well during the regular season, there's another that didn't. And you'll find similar discrepencies among the regular season outcomes of teams that looked awful during preseason.

Let's wait til after the Niner game before we start thumping our chests.

Heh, heh! Remeber how the Cards "hid" Boldin during his rookie pre-season? They hardly threw at him during all four PS games.

Came the regular season and...well...it's in the record books.

The 49ers offenesive line looks much better than it did last year. That is pretty much all they have going for them right now.

Every injury they have is devistating for them because they have no depth. It's kind of like the Cardinals were a few years ago. As soon as you lose 1 or 2 starters you are screwed because you don't have anyone who can sucessfully fill the starters shoes.

Yeah, and we went 3-13 for the season.

yep I expect them to come out and try to run the ball down our throats, that and Antonio Bryant are their weapons plain and simple. The offense will be improved but the defense could be REALLY bad to start the season.

I'll be REALLY disappointed if we lose this game let's put it that way.

I really like Gore and Bryant. However if one of them go down they are screwed.

I orgially thought that the 49ers defensive starters looked solid. However with all of the injuries and the lack of depth, its most likely will be a long season for 49er fans.

For the record, under McGinnis, the team went 4-12, 5-11, and 7-9 for the whole seasons he was coach.

Under Green, the team's has been 5-11 and 6-10. If Green goes 5-11 or worse this season, he will be tied (or worse) than McGinnis. Just interesting facts. Love the talent Green has brought here.

Wow..that's true..it's just that those losses under Mac were brutal..I mean like 42-3 or something like that..the Cards were just blown out on the road in the Mac years..even to bad teams..The Cards have been more competitive under Green although his w/l record isn't much improved...

Yeah, it was 4-12 not 3-13. We had to have the worst 4-12 team in the history of pro football though. Last in points scored and points allowed. What a brutal season that was.

That was a brutal season when the Cards would get demolished on the road, had a 38-0 whipping in the home opener against Seattle, but somehow beat the Packers, Bengals, 49ers, and the Vikings at home. Interesting enough, that was the rise of McCown (and the fall of Jeff Blake) and McCown had the Cards within a field goal of beating the Panthers prior to Carolina's march to the Super Bowl.

I remember that game vividly. 38-0 and like 112 degrees. I thought I was going to die.

And SF dropped 50 on us in the game where McCown infamously hit Shelton in the face mask and there was the other play where Terrell Owens was left completely uncovered for a TD. Man, that team sucked!

The worst part about the Mac years was, even after an embarrassing defeat like that, the next week the exact same 22 players would be in the starting lineup. Pitiful.

And that one win was against an equally pathetic 3-13 Lions team in OT on an absolute gift call that should have resulted in an easy Detroit FG on a Joke Plummer INT. I'm also pretty sure we started Kevin Kasper and Jason McAddley that day.

Hopefully in a few years we can look back at how horrible some of those Mac teams were and chuckle.

I've endured a ton of losses as a fan of this team, none was as demoralizing as that one. I'll never forget that game.....I think we turned the ball over on 3 straight possesions to start it.

I'll remember that game until the day I die.

Those were the days where winning wasn't asked for oe expected but just for the team to show up and be competitive.

Those were the days when our superstars were someone like Ray Thompson

Yo Russ are you going to the game on Christmas Eve?

I've been in Northern CA for a few months now (attending grad school in Monterey) and my wife hooked me up with tickets to the Christmas Eve game.....
