Stout
Hold onto the ball, Murray!
No worries. Sounds like we're just on differing sides of the aisle on whether we should take him at 16, which is fine. I might be higher on the guy if this were a bad or even average edge class, or if the DT class weren't so robust. I favor signing a vet edge and drafting DT early (Nolen is my guy).Depends on your definition of "huge sack producers". By the same token though, how many guys have been great in college and done nothing in the league?
But from current players, Oweh, Travon Walker and Danielle Hunter are all 10+ sack guys. Jonathon Cooper, the Denver guy they just extended over Browning had 10.5 sacks this year and never had more than 3.5 in college. Same happens on the interior. Kobie Turner that the Rams drafted had a single 2 sack season in college and has 17 sacks in 2 years in the NFL.
On point 2, I don't think it will be worse in the NFL. One thing I noticed when watching his misses is that he's often the only guy in the backfield, which meant QB's on deep college drops had a tonne of open field to move about in. I think the NFL favors him with tighter pockets and more help.
But all this is by the by really as Stewart, for the want of an inch or two and a bit of luck, could easily have racked up 5 sacks a year. GM's will see that on tape and not be concerned with his numbers.
I'm not saying your wrong to be concerned, you can find something to be concerned about for most draft picks, but I don't think it's set in stone that he's not an NFL talent, and I think teams will be very high on him.
Now, if we can get Steward in the 2nd, as one board draft simulator has, then heck yeah, that would be a great time to roll the dice. Just not at #16 for me (and I'm not favoring trade backs either).
