49ers jump into the Peyton Manning sweepstakes

Getty Images ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the San Francisco 49ers have emerged as one of the three finalists to sign free agent quarterback Peyton Manning.
The other two teams are the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans. According to Schefter, the Arizona Cardinals “have been advised that they are to proceed as if they will not get Peyton Manning.”
We already knew the Dolphins were out.
Schefter, who broke the 49ers news on SportsCenter early Friday afternoon, reported that San Francisco secretly sent club officials to watch Manning throw at Duke University last Tuesday night. The 49ers’ representatives were said to be “very impressed with what they saw.”
The Niners have already given Manning a physical.
And this explains whey they haven’t re-signed free agent quarterback Alex Smith yet.

So much for my numerous posts saying he was AZ-bound. Looks like we got outplayed. :(

Bad enough he isn't coming here, but if he goes to a division rival, and the 49ers of all teams. My god.

Bad news of not getting him, is much worse if he goes to 49ers.

Yeah now that it's the Niners they are talking about, the whole 'nfc' thing doesn't matter now. Ugh. (Bruschi specifically)

Thought Niners were out of this. Either way if I were Alex Smith at this point I would look elsewhere.

One can't help but wonder if it was SF all along and he used AZ to get leverage on SF.

If true, there's a stench of slime about the way the Mannings, the teams, the league and the media have handled this.

Frankly, they've wasted my time, and I've lost all respect for the carnival they call Pro Football.

Reason - we were led to believe there would be a fair, level transparent process. Instead we had heavy hitters & their posses jetting in and out of Durham under cover of darkness, secret workouts and last-minute suitors jumping into the pile. If that's the way the game's to be played, let the fans know so we don't have to waste time & energy on a fool's errand.

Not Peyton's fault we have a Grimm O-line, everything else was golden. I wouldn't come here after a neck or head injury...good luck with that noggin Kolb! Skelton supporters, don't throw the towel in just yet. I think Kolb can get us to the playoffs if he can stay on the field, but both our QBs are toast in the Arizona traditional shotgun spread. Peyton would have changed those plays in the huddle, before we ever got up to the line. Oh well, still a fan. The whiners and Chickens won't get Peyton either though, so atleast we got that.

My only hope now is that this blows up in Harbaugh's face.

PM picks DEN/TEN and Alex Smith tells SF to pound sand.

alex would be an idiot to do so. his best shot and highest dollars are in gay bay

A fair, level, transparent process? Who said that? Who said anything about it that had any real knowledge of anything? If you wasted your time its YOUR fault, noone else. Nobody owes you anything.
