With a center that is not in the league anymore , Ross playing like a third stringer I have to say that the great Barry would have had trouble running the ball last week. JJ needs time to develope. Pulling him after 8 carries proves nothing to nobody. This is true in all sports. The great Willie Mays couldn't hit when he first came up. Very few soon to be stars come out of the box at a very high level. This holds especially true in so called skill positions. Give the kid a chance. IMO JJ is going to be a very exciting successfull running back in this league. I guess time will tell. One thing is for sure the talent evaluators starting with Green believe in this kid. I's ay that's worth more than most of our opinions till proven otherwise.

Good post.

But then agian he has had 8 carries so far, thats good enough for me, he is a bust. :sarcasm:

As for me on this whole JJ thing. I think after 8 carries he hasnt looked like a good runner that cant be debated. But then again his oline sucks so i will give him more then 8 carries and 1 real NFL game to judge him on that front. Plus did everyone forget that he also had 4 catches for 22 yards. If our OL gets better I can easily see JJ getting over 100+ combined yards a game, becuase there is no denying that this kid can catch and he just needs to get his NFL legs under him like any other rookie does.

Shane and Swd, I'm surprised you let him get away with this misstatement.

Holmes had 0 attempts his first year in the league. His 2nd year he was the Ravens leading rusher with over 1000yds and scored 7 TD's.

Alexander in his first year averaged 4.9 ypc and scored 2 TD's and in his 2nd ran for 1,318 and 14TD's.

Jackson averaged 5.0ypc and scored 4td's his first season playing behind Marshall Faulk.

Davis ran for over a 1000 and scored 8td's his first season.

JJones averaged 4.2 ypc and scored 7 TD's.

Kevin Jones 1,133 yards 4.7ypc and 5 TD's.

I don't think that the above numbers would indicate that any of those guys didn't look good initially.

He said RB's that didnt look good initially (first few games, first half of the season, ect), not complete first seasons. Which in both Jones cases, both looked pretty bad and called busts up until the mid season marks. As for the others, I dont feel like looking at what they did their first 8 games or so, so I can comment on those guys. Which the point he was trying to make was, "give the kid more then 8 carries before making a matter of fact statement that the kid is a bust".

Holmes not playing as a rookie would qualify as not looking good though no?
I realize the circumstances where he was, but again if he was as good then as he is now, he'd have started.

I don't agree on Alexander and Jackson they were good pretty much right away I recall. Davis I think got the starting job by injury during the year, early on he was not playing because he couldn't blitz pickup and they gave up so many sacks they were concerned about that. Jones, both of them, have already been discussed neither was an instant star.

Hell SWD cited Ricky Williams, even he didn't have a great rookie year, 884 yards, 3.5 ypc, teammates didn't like him, universally called overrated. As great a player as Ricky is even he has only topped 4 ypc once in his career.

Only 2 points I disagree with and I cant believe people dont agreee with me on them.

1) JJ has had more than 8 carries. period.

2) People should have the right to post what they feel about games/players/positions/free agnets/anything related to football. To say someone is a bust is just a biggest guess that they wont be. And dont be fooled. Those saying lets see are saying he isnt a bust atm. So both sides are guessing.

1)LOL you really think its only one game of action. My god I hate the american education system. Its no wonder we have been slipping from super power status.

2) Wow you named 9 RB's there. Im very impressed. Id list all the RB's that busted but I dont want to use up all of skkorps bandwidth...get it? Doubt it.

3) Johnson and Pace finally lived up to their potential? Its official stick to basketball because you know nothing about football.

4) Ah how nice. Even if he does turn out to be a bust we are wrong and you are right

1) I think my initial post already stated that i dont agree with your assessment that preseason is a big predicator of future success or future ineptitude. So yes, my University of Arizona buisness degree and impending University of Miami Masters degree are going to put our credibility on the line here and say that 8 carries in a regular season is not a ample time to evaluate a player. Oh and i apologize for my role in the downfall of contemporary american civilization.....

2) Once again my point is completly being missed. Yes I could name a lot of busts as well. In fact i could name alot of busts who initially showed alot of potential and went on to amount to nothing or much less then expected (Quentin Griffin, Tim Couch, Jake Plummer, Kerry Collins) Once again the point remains: For an informed opinion, more evaluation is needed. No one has ever made or broken a career (not including injury) after 8 carries.

To step out of the RB realm, Let me tell you about a QB who fans and coachs gave up to fast on because he was a brash drunk who couldn't avoid throwing balls into coverage. Their "brilliant" assessment led them to trade this player due to his apparent inability to ever play within the confines of an NFL system and have success. This decision was based primarily on his erratic pre-season play. At this point naming him is redundent as we have all heard the story before, but i recall said player having a pretty good career after his trade to title town.

3) Pace and BJ have not completly fulfilled round one draft pick status, but it seems both players are on their way too doing so (once again being too impatient with player development) Giving up on both of them would be a mistake back after their first game, as well as now. Darwin Walker is another player (who dominated on monday night) was also given up too fast by the org. and has gone on to develop into a stud.

Im glad you brought up basketball because all this football talk was starting to make me nervous, as i obviously have no idea what im talking about. You must have visited the Suns side of this board to know I am a big Joe Johnson fan.....You know Joe Johnson right? The player who every Suns fan wanted to behead because he wasn't developing as fast as many would have liked. Yeah he went on to collect 70 million and become the focal point of a team this off season, but it would have been much wiser if we would have just cut our losses after his first game with us and got a second round pick for him....;)

4) Are you even reading my posts? This isn't really an issue of being wrong or right. I could care less if you go to sleep tonight thinking "Boy Az's Finest sure has a handle on his Cardinal football". IMO DG (whom im a BIG supporter of) should push his ego aside and give Shipp the carries to start games so his pounding will wear on the other team and JJ can then come in as guys try to arm tackle him, he will break off big runs. Im a little worried as a Cardinal fan as i would love every player drafted to come in and light up the league (and we have been very spoiled with our drafting the last couple years) right away, and JJ has yet to do that, but that doesn't mean im going to write him off. Trust me, if JJ had tore up the pre-season and ran for 150 yards in the opener, I would still be here tempering everyones "HOF" predictions (or more precisely overreactions) as well, as one good game doesn't make you a diety either.

As for other related posts, Russ i digress. Alexander and Jackson both showed signs of being good players which doesn't really work for my analogy in this particular thread. My point was that they didn't start right away, and i bet alot of fans were also overly anxious initially that these first round picks were not starting. But we are discussing JJ's lack of showing potential, so you are correct. BTW you have some of the most informative posts on this thread (and overall) and your knowledge is respected in this corner...

Your right I forgot you are the king of credibility around here. How dare we have an opinion differing of yours. You are the almighty RB talent evaluator that knows exactly who is going to go on to stardom. You can list RBs all day that didnt look good initially as you say. We could give a list just as long of more highly touted RBs than Arrington who didnt look good and are complete busts.

Wow, i didnt realize my posts were being so misinterpreted. Im not pretending to know the future or what actually is going to happen in this kids career. Once again, thank you for pointing out that the NFL has had players drafted who didn't live up to expectations. I was unaware of this. You realize I'm a "basketball" fan so please excuse the naitivite:rolleyes: . I am no better at evaluating RB's than yourself..... (actually after re reading your posts i take that back. I am better at it than you, but there are much more informed opinions than mine on this message board so I digress.) Im watching the same games you are...i wish things had started out better. Lets give him another 8 carries and THEN we can cut him.......

Pariah, I find it odd that you have pointed me out and thought enough of it to actually post a couple times on the subject. Your point is well taken though and i dont want to offend this message board, as it has replaced espn.com and azcardinals.com as my favorite site and where i spend most of my web surfing time. I will keep this in mind with all future posts. Are you sure that its not because you are actually starting to worry that Brad Van Pelt is going to turn into a Pro Bowler?:p ...I mean he did have a hell of a preseason........

Exactly! Why is that? Maybe they weren't ready to start, so they didn't?

Hmm, no. I'm not worried that Van Pelt will turn into a probowler. I don't think he will, but even if he does, why should I care?

My wife and I argue the merits of an edication through the school as she has a masters vs reallife (Military + associates degree) I have found through and through that Id go to war and work any day with a person with a real life degree over a paid sheepskin. But thats another topic.

You think BJ and Pace are living up to 1st round status? That says everything I ever could about your knowledge of football. Interesting you think Pace is when the only good plays he has are in preseason but yet you dont count preseason.

And you have absolutely no idea what happened in the Walker situation obviously. Even Walker himself said it wasnt the cards fault. He "woke up" after being cut and decided to give it 100%.

it was a joke....wasn't it you who i got into a debate with about Van Pelts throwing ability last week? i think we got a beer on it....I was reffering to that....

and as i said, its very possible JJ isn't ready to start. Im just going to allow DG to make the call as he has the best insight, ego nonwithstanding.....

 Im beyond frustrated arguing this point with you. You win. I have no concept of football and JJ Arrington should be assassinated. Satisfied?

I'm with you on life vs college.
I wonder if the Cards have another teams slacker cut that is going to "wake up".

bro - if you see swd on the politics board - you'de understand his style of rhetoric.
Take it with a grain of salt and sense of his sick humor and you'll be fine.

We just won't agree on #1 so no point, I don't think preseason is important.

#2 I agree, you should and do have the right to say what you want and I in turn have the right to say I disagree. I don't agree with Arizona's finest methodology of disagreeing. I agree with his comments on Arrington, but I don't agree with the way he's saying it and attacking other posters.

Hell I disagree with people all the time and still respect what they're posting. Just the other day K9 and I were disagreeing about something while at the same time I was PM'ing him asking if he knew a good place to get 49er/Cardinal tix. It's football, we shouldn't be blasting each other.

I hope you're wrong about JJ, I'm sure you do too because that's good for the team.

Why didn't you post something like that sooner? You can say anything you want to, of course. But this is logical and perfect. Of course both sides are guessing whether JJ will be good to great or a bust. However both you and Shane have come off as sounding like you've already made up your minds that he's a bust. I don't see that, and it's way too early to proclaim. Sure, lean that way but it's not certain. Just like it isn't sure he's gonna be good. I can see there being a big issue if Shipp had broke off 70 yards rushing in that game, but he didn't. He had less success than JJ did.

Guessing is fine; acting as if your guess is the truth is not. For the good of the team, I hope JJ is all he is advertised, and has demonstrated in the past. I want us to win, and I think everyone feels the same.

I see no reason what football has to do with life or death assasinations. But as for the rest Im glad you see the light.

I like Shipps determined style of running, but, finding paydirt is not his strength.

Emmitt, even at his advanced age, still had an uncanny ability to score from close in while playing for AZ.

Watch emmitts 2003 and 2004 TD runs, and you'll see what a "nose for the endzone" really is.

i did'nt realize my posts were coming across as so attacking to ohter posters because thta is certainly not my intention. SWD and Shane, while both big fans of the team, have been overly cynical after our four preseason games and one regular season game, and while they are entitled to their opinion, the negative posts over the last week have started to get at me. I am a diehard for this team and while im at times overly optimistic and too forgiving of our losing football team, I just want people to realize that extreme evaluations of rookies and our team in general after one game is prepostrous.

Lets be honest. Its very possible JJ can have a big game tomorrow with all the starters back on the line (assuming that is the problem) and completly reverse everyones assumptions about his "potential" I just want this team to do well tomorrow and I think JJ will have a big say in that one way or the other. So there is a part of me that wants to deny that he has looked shaky. But I watched him quite a bit at Cal, before he was even on our radar screen, and i remember looking at him and thinking that his skills and style translated well to the NFL.

So despite his sudden fondeness for the dancing, Im not going to neglect a full season of highlights last year in a upper level conference and big games against good teams, combined with a good combine (three of probaly the biggest predicators of NFL success) because he has looked shaky behind an pourous offensive line for about 4.5 games. I just hope you will admit you were incorrect with your assessment of him if this actually happens becuse you two have been ripping him to shreds for what seems like weeks now. There is even a thread entitled " Lay off Arrington" becuse the backlash is so fierce right now. Im just trying to add an element of reason into the topic, as I myself would not be willing to be money on whether this will end up turning out well. But I do know he needs more time and better circumstances before we decide.....

I will apologize for my tone for my previous posts and though its really no excuse, two of those posts were after a long night at the bar. I will try and practice sober posting from this point on........:)
