ESPN Insider's Whispers from Around the NFL said:
• When his 2005 season came to an abrupt end after he severely cut his forearm while wrestling with a friend during the Cardinals' bye week, it looked like former first-round pick Calvin Pace would be a long shot to stay with the team. But now we're hearing the team apparently still thinks Pace's upside is great enough to keep him on the roster.

• Our Cardinals sources tell us that, in order for sixth-year RB Marcel Shipp to be assured of making the final cut, he will have to convince the team he can make an impact on special teams, especially if former Northern Arizona star RB Roger Robinson continues his stellar play for Frankfurt in NFL Europe.

• Although converted DL Fred Wakefield did a surprisingly effective job for the Cardinals as an offensive lineman when given the opportunity last season, we hear he will probably have a tough time making the final cut next season.

Good luck, Marcel. Hopefully, someone will remind you where the endzone is in camp.

All this is saying that we are now getting solid depth, which we never had b4.

I like Shipp, but Edge taking most of the snaps and JJ getting spot duty sounds like a nice problem to me.

Marcel Shipp hasn't scored a TD since 2003...JJ doubled his Touchdowns in 1 season, to Shipps last 2years

I always wondered why everyone was so high on Shipp. I've always thought he kinda sucked. And with your depth chart at RB now, calling him expendable is the understatement of the year.

Speaking of guys that have continually made the roster:

Hodgins and King, each guy has spent the last two years on the IR (and got on early, not a week 15 addition) but remain on the roster.

I'm not complaining, just the opposite infact, I've seen that DG plays players and I was very suprised to see them still on the roster even this far, I may be wrong, but I'm starting to draw the conclusion that in the NFL's era of what-have-you-done-for-me-lately DG must believe that these two players could still make significant impact on the field.

Pace was making good steady progress and I was never worried when he was on the field (can't be said for every player ever in Card's red) and I look forward to seeing how his rehab went.

If Shipp can find a place on the roster where he can help than he should stay, but it does look like the opportunity to make the roster is slipping.

Go back a couple of years ago when he and Thomas Jones shredded the Sea Hawks. He showed upside, but injuries conspired against him.

And Jame's spot is in the Price is Right; Arrington's is in the Wheel of Fortune.

Wow, that may have been the most obscure and lame joke I have ever posted.

I think Pace, King and Hodgins are all guys that could have contributed a great deal to our team last year.

I assume that Shipp will be cut after the draft. We'll probably pick up a back late, and bring in our Euro League star. With Edge, JJ, Robinson and draft pick, Shipp is the odd man out. Too bad we probably can't trade him though, as everyone in the NFL knows he's soon to be a wire pickup.

Thanks for working hard Marcel...I've never been your biggest fan, or even a big fan...but you did give heart and effort. Good luck with your new team..and I hope you find the endzone a few times before you retire, hopefully not against us though.

Shipp's salary thie year is $1.8 million. (per joeshmo listing). That is a lot of money for the #3 back.

In my opinion Shipp dug his own grave the last game of the season when Green tried to get him a TD over and over and over. All the while green was probably eyeing the edge on the other side of the field.

Shipp is still the #3 on the roster and the Cards will at least carry 4 into the season. It usually takes about this long for a back to fully recover from the type of injury Shipp had. Robinson hasn't proved anything yet. He's running against mediocre talent in the NFLE. Arrington still has to prove he has the heart and drive to play in the NFL. The wild card in this is J.R. Redmond. Will he be back this year and show as well as he did in last years preseason.

I'm just saying, don't be so quick to set Shipp sailing.

King is playing for peanuts, so his potential saves his roster spot.

Shipp will not be let go until the first or last cut down dates unless they need the money for some reason which I doubt.

He will be given a shot to see if he can contribute on special teams, which we need. If he cannot contribute on special teams as the #3 RB then and only then will he be cut IMO.

Let's not forget that Shipp was once a heck of a special teams player before he got his chance to play RB. I doubt that a guy that has started as much as Shipp has will have the desire to go full tilt on ST but you never know...

If he wants to make 1.8 Mill this year he will care. He wont make anywhere near that coin anywhere else. He will also do it if he really is the great team player, team mate, and Mr. Try hard football player that everyone likes to call him.

But we all know that he's not anywhere like the same player he was before he got his chance to play RB.

EDIT: Also, when Shipp was being "a heck of a special teams player", he had a lower return average than Reggie Swinton (on 12 career returns) and 1 special teams tackle. Isn't this kind of revisionist history?

I thought baby was for dinner....

Shipp will make it through most of training camp, but the final cut will be tough.

If that's true, you boys must be starving.

Second place is first loser. Welcome back to the pack. Now let's see if you can get to the dance again. I say no.

Of course, you actually made the playoffs and had hope, but I can't acknowledge that ;)

Shipp was a great player for the Cardinals.

Unfortunately for him (fortunately for us) and other guys like Ron McKinnon and my old favorite Russell Davis the requirements to be classified a great player for the Cardinals have gone to much higher levels over the past two seasons.

But as always it's hard to judge a single Cards player when the entire unit or at times, the entire team sucks.

Shipp showed it on film from what I recall, but the numbers don't necessarily back that up. I respect a lot of your opinions Kerouac, but sometimes you base everything on numbers. If numbers were the end all be all, Kliff Kingsbury would the best QB prospect to come out of the draft in years...
