I would doubt the Cards very seriously "sniff" this one. Why would they?

McKinnon's just signed a new deal last year. Lassister's comments at the time in regard to that, to me, was just further demonstration of the sour grapes attitude HE had developed.
I've felt that it was some of the Cards making that commitment to McKinnon that was one of the things Lassiter was envious and maybe a little jealous of.

McKinnon is a great fit for this teams needs. What I fully expect to see is his gradual weening out of the lineup over the next couple of years, as some of the younger guys are worked in gradually. I like the mix at LB now. McKinnon doesn't have to be THE MAN, all by himself.

Kids like Hayes can be worked in at their optimal pace. I say don't mess with what they've got now. Especially don't gamble on some player with serious injury questions and who may not even be THAT much better, (if at all) than McKinnon.

With regard to coming out on passing downs - just curious, but how many NFL teams leave their MLB's in on passing and how many of them go into some sort of nickel or dime packages?

I agree about the age thing. Plus I would add that really until last year, he was very durable. The question of course now? Is he still durable and this was just an injury or is this the beginning of a series of injuries? That is the risk however up until recently he started each and every game for the teams he played on pretty much.

I would venture a guess that the vast majority of MLBs come out on obvious passing downs. A total guess on my part though.

because I have never been a big McKinnon fan and feel as though an upgrade over him would make this team so much better, I am leaning towards liking the Cards making a run at Godfrey. WildCards does make a good point about the depth at LB. It is a deep...if maybe a bit inexperienced unit. The Cards aren't championship contenders yet (on paper) so I think they should be grooming these younger guys and that will be hard behind McKinnon or Godfrey (if they sign him). At some point, they must develop productive draft picks and that is only done through playing them.

Hair-brained idea #2,351:

Pick up Godfrey then package VandenBosch, McKinnon and a Young WR and try to get a proven DE in Cardinal Red (maybe a guy like McGinness; wasn't he a cap liability for NE?)

Your logic is impeccable. However, I have this nagging feeling that, by passing up quality players "in order to play the young guys", we perpetuate the pattern of (1) losing while our young guys learn and (2) having the young guys we play leave us because we lose all the time...

Great point. The single best thing the Cards could do is actually have a winning season or two - that would solve a whole bunch of problems - and make it easier to sign the Hollidays and Colvins of the world.

Even if Godfrey helps us go 7-9 instead of 5-11, it helps, especially when the "experts" are pegging us for 3-13.

Can't argue that. The reason I like developing these youngsters is the teams that have success are the teams that seem (perception or reality?) to get their draft picks...especially their high picks...to produce well and then they develop this group of young players which are then filled in with FA pickups. I guess at some point, you have to develop these young players and work like hell to sign them to long term deals without all the fuss that is typical.

The Cards seem to fail on developing their draft picks so the losing is perpetuated because there is little quality and then when they try and fill holes with FAs, those FAs don't see a future of winning.

At some point though, the Cards must take those risks and bring in a Godfrey in order to improve themselves and hopefully make it a bit easier to sell the Cards to future FAs.

I don't know why some posters think Godfrey is such an upgrade over McKinnon. Look at their career stats. They are nearly identical.

By all accounts Godfrey is a solid player and a good locker room guy and I have no problem throwing him in the mix, but he isn't going to elevate the defense any more than Ronnie Mac.

He's faster than Mac... Now we get to play against him twice a year.
