absolutely he needs more playing time and that's the main downside of being a rookie in a winning team.
I wonder if he could become as good as his brother if he was starting in NJ Nets.

lopez has played on a lottery team all season. news flash - the suns are eliminated from the playoffs.

All I'm saying is that it is a little too early to proclaim him as a total disaster with no hope of improvement. That's all.

I think that is fair. I mean the guy can't get much worse. I am not disagreeing with you on that point at all. Just saying that it's not a stretch to assume this guy won't amount to much when you look at his play in college and what he has done so far.

I'm not saying he'll be starter-quality, but some of you people need to understand how rookie big men actually develop in the NBA. There are a ton of them that were virtually nothings when they came out. I mean, we have one ON OUR OWN TEAM, for chrissakes! Robin may never become starter-quality, and he probably won't, but it's short-sighted and pure Phoenix Sun homerism to right him off as being a "nothing" in the NBA. Fans of teams always ignore the trends of the NBA when talking about their own team.

what legit bigman that was virtually nothing when he came out did we have on our team? shaq and amare were instantly successful. are you talking about lou? he's not a legit bigman.

Robert Swift didn't go to college and hasn't done squat in the NBA - he's shown potential to play and a knack for injuries and tattoos - I dig big ugly, but he's not a contributor in any way shape or form

Amundson is far from a big man and far from the 6'9" they list him at - my wife is good friends with the wife of one of his cousins in MN - the group photo they sent after the recent t-wolves game would have me put him at 6'6" to 6'7" tops - he also did nothing in college (career 7 and 5 guy), but showed some signs of life by putting up 14 and 9 in his last year and grabbing a bunch of double doubles - lopez had 2 double doubles his entire collegiate career - he was also undrafted, had to hustle through the summer leagues to get into a team, play in the D-league and change organzations ........ if that is the benchmark for your 15h overall pick, then it's pretty sad

brendan heywood put up 12 & 7 his last 3 years at UNC - he's developed into a 8 and 6 guy at the NBA level - people loved his long arms and big frame, but he was soft even in college

etan thomas put up 13 and 10 his last year at syracuse and was a 12 and 8 guy his last 3 years in college

Blatche came out of HS and is just starting to look like he could be servicable

JaVale McGee is a rookie out of Reno putting up 6 and 4 in 15 mpg - he also came out after his sophomore year, tall, big wingspan, was drafted 3 spots after lopez and put up 14pts, 7 boards and 3 blocks his final season in reno - doesn't have the lopez name, but probably the better prospect and many wizards fans thought he was a complete reach and probable bust

i appreciate someone doing the research to write EXACTLY what i was going to write. lopez doesn't even measure up to any of those guys, from his college experience, to his pro experience, to his potential. i spell robin "B-U-S-T."

Well, thank you for putting words in my mouth, but I'm done with this discussion. All I'm saying is that it is a little too early to proclaim him as a total disaster with no hope of improvement. That's all.

Being of sound mind and body, I, Ouchie-Z-Clown, hereby proclaim that ROBIN LOPEZ is a total disaster with no hope of improvement.

Okay, you're hopeless but after the way he played in the Minny game (his play, not stats) I have a bit. It was a decided improvement and if it sticks you'll already be wrong.

...and you certainly don't disappoint--you're as predictable as a Washington Wizards/Los Angeles Lakers game.

I tend to agree with this. I just can't see how he can develop into a productive player. He has no basketball instincts and one of the lowest BBIQs I have ever seen combined with poor mechanics with just about everything he does.

He does play with energy but he is so spastic on the court he seems to get in the way of his own team more than anything. The Suns obviously missed big on the pick, and the fact everyone is saying big men take time to develop just shows how badly they missed because if you're going to take 3 years to develop someone it better be someone with significant talent(like McGee who was mentioned or DeAndre Jordan).

What does that make me then if I declared him a future above average starting center? :D

Hahahahhhahaha. (you asked for it. :) )

He is a poor, poor, poor, poor man's Ben Wallace. Lopez has absolutely no offensive game, and is a poor man defender. I don't believe Lopez has ever blocked a shot from his man, he is a good weak side defender, but his one on one defense is poor.

I think Lopez may have already reached his ceiling. Sad.

He blocked Marc Gasol's shot tonight!

And come on dreamcastrocks, I am sure he has blocked his mans shot before but I do agree with you that his man defense has been poor thus far.

Well the FO picked a guy at #15 they meant could contribute right away in order to win now. That didn't work out. Adjusting to the NBA usually takes a few years longer for big men than say wing players with decent college experience.

In hindsight they should have/could have used the pick on a project, a more talented player with a higher ceiling, like McGee, Speights, Hibbert or Jordan.

I was not sold on him from the start and I have my doubts he'll be regular starter (much less a cornerstone - where did that come from??) but I'm not calling him a bust. That's the sort of thing the loud mouthed classless ESPN commentators would say. :doi: :pullhair:

I'll wait and see what he does in summer league and early next season before I make up my mind.

kind of sad we done hear anything about our last year's 15th pick.
whether he's been hitting the gym and adding a bit of weight,
or working out with his brother to improve anything at all about his game.

signing frye just shows that maybe lopez has been put on the back burner as a sun.

suns.com has articles and video of him working out with dragic and the rookies and some of the summer team. his brother has also been in town this summer and they work out together.

sometimes you want to look for the things you want to hear...

just watched it, lopez still looks like lopez of last year. really didnt say much on what he was focusing on improving, just that he had to prove that he belongs out there on the court.

Because all his life, his main competition has been a twin brother. That's often what you do when you face players your own size

Why? You just get an elbow to the face if you do that! Not that it ever happened to me!

i stick by my statements prior to the draft, during the draft, after the draft, and throughout the season. he was a bad selection. suns wanted a contributor. he was not that. i argued with many of you about wanting to draft for potential verses a contributor. should have drafted mcgee or andre jordan. you cannot teach talent. we drafted a less talented guy who has never "gotten it" before and we're expecting the light to turn on now? good luck to you optimists who keep trumpeting him.

and chap, your immediate response to my commentary is even more predictable than my commentary. if have a player that deserves praise i'll praise him, which actually makes me a little less predictable than you ALWAYS calling out EVERY even SLIGHTLY negative observation that i make. i could wind my watch by your predictability.

If you think my not proclaiming a rookie big man a complete bust after only a single season as huge optimism, what does that say about you?

Dude, you've NEVER liked any player the Suns have gotten in the past 4 years. And good job responding to a post made 3 months ago.

For those of you who remember, many years ago 6'10" Andrew Lang, who was given a good chance to contribute as the Suns center, would always bring a rebound down to his knees, putting him on equal footing with Power Forwards to Point Guards.

He was constantly getting stripped after a rebound.

He never changed that habit. And I never understood why. Otherwise, I liked his game as a true Center on a team that traditionally went small.

Yeah, I'll bite, which players have the Suns gotten to be excited about? Earl Clark is the first in a long time that's had considerable upside.

I agree....I haven't been this excited about a Suns' rookie since Stoudemire. I was displeased with the Lopez selection and thought we had some better options at #15 last season. I know it was slim pickens at that slot, but my choice was Roy Hibbert. He was more productive last season for the Pacers and has a brighter future.
