Apparently
To this day...

I dont understand how you spend the #1 pick on a QB and then decide jack of all trades LB the next year.

You do what the Bengals, Dolphins and Chargers did. You draft a WR or OL the following year. That was their focus.

I was on the Cee Dee Lamb pick.

Then you probably don't trade a first for Hollywood

I absolutely still believe this was about sending a message. If it was really solely about players earning their spots, there is no way Collins would be starting at OLB after he spent a good chunk of the Chiefs game on the ground. If Collins gets time to play through his mistakes at a new position, the same should go for Simmons.

Simmons was SIX MONTH LONG evaluation, not simply his last putrid effort.

The guy has value as a player. He's not what we wanted him to be, at least with how we used him, but there will be worse players on our roster this year than Simmons. The fact we paid his bonus only to now trade him for a 7th is a joke. Clearly an ad-hoc move, not one with a plan in mind*.

I don't expect him to become the next Reddick, but the guy might have a decent career if stuck at one position with a team that knows how to coach players. He has limitations, but also some great attributes. He's flashed. He'll likely flash quite a bit again. There's something to work with. With our team at the bottom of the league in terms of talent, we just gave up on the guy. The gap between us and the average NFL team just got bigger.

When we were hiring our GM/coaches, surely you find out what they think of the better players and higher draft picks on the roster. You see what the plan for them was. It's not a good sign they missed on Simmons and cut bait for a 7th this early. It makes one wonder, what else did they get wrong?

I also find it weird that all these good players we let go in free agency, assets we didn't capitalize on, and high draft picks with talent just didn't fit that quick turnaround plan. Imagine telling MB during the interview... yeah we'll not re-sign Allen or Murphy to team-friendly contracts, release Hopkins, and trade Simmons. Would the candidate who presented that plan be the one you hired for a 'quick turnaround'?

Everything is pointing to a complete tear-down, and I just hope the new front office recognizes that is what they are doing because I'm starting to doubt it.

It seemed most of Simmons's issues were his 'head'. I just find it perplexing that it could be his head when he was also moved around in college. Moving him back to safety then cutting bait. Whatever plan they had, it didn't work.

Also, I don't see how ducking questions about Simmons helps build the team. Seems like a coward's way out.

That leaves me as a fan to think there's one of two options happening. Either this is a full rebuild they are bumbling into one ad-hoc decision at a time or a full rebuild that they are being sly* about. Either way, it's a full rebuild. With this team, I can't rule out the first, even if it's probably the 2nd.

Just remember whatever their plan is... they keep telling us they are trying to build a team for a quick turnaround, but all we keep seeing is the removal of talent. Full rebuild.

That roster bonus and subsequent trade is a bone-headed sequence of events. If it was truly a trade based on six months and not the KC game you have to say it is a questionable sequence. I think the KC effort is more important than they are admitting.

I disagree with this. I don't think the problems with Simmons were with his processing or anything. I think that he was too stiff to play coverage and didn't have the instincts to play off-ball linebacker. Ten years ago he probably could have been similar to evolutionary Adrian Wilson, but that position doesn't exist much in the NFL anymore.

Keim just had such a bad handle on where the NFL was going in some ways.

This and for all we know he has been putrid in most of the practice sessions as well. It's not fair at all to say it's just due to one performance. Collins on the other hand looked solid in week 1 and may very well look solid in a lot of the practices.

My guess is he simply didnt fit anywhere in the defensive system. At least this way we get something for him rather than nothing when he walks in the spring since it was clear he wasnt going to play many snaps this season.

But I dodged a bullet.... just ordered a Jersey...was back and forth between a Simmons and a Moore...
ordered CAP SPACE instead....whew!

He'd still enter into the comp pick equation.

The best possible spin on this is that we accelerated a potential 2025 comp pick we were unlikely to get because we'll spend in free agency next year.

does he?? They refused his fifth year option.

a quick search found...
Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

Simmons wasnt going to play much and his salary was only a bit over 1mil... I guess pick 250ish is better than pick 270ish

Simmons is without question one of the top 15-18 defensive players on the roster despite his limitations.

K9, come on man. Don't you remember his rookie season? Him getting benched almost immediately in favor of a capable albeit journeyman LB in Hicks?

Now juxtapose that to PJJ and Beacham. Any chance the capable Beacham starts over Peanut Butter and Jelly this year? No. Simmons failed from the beginning, and has continued to under-perform for a 1st round pick. Even last year he's playing behind some really, really mediocre guys like Valijho and Neinman.

I wish the kid the best but his tenure in AZ is a spectacular failure, and that kind of failure is toxic. Give his snaps to someone who actually has a chance to improve. Him being the 3rd string Nickle back and half-assing it on special teams wouldn't help our team. It would just hurt the team more.

Both sides needed a fresh start. It's painful, but that's the way life is sometimes.

Honestly I'm surprised we only traded him for a 7th was thinking maybe a 5th on tools alone. But his performance during the Chiefs game really nailed his value town.
Personally, I think this was another situation Monti handled poorly in terms of timing, similar to Hopkins. In both instances Monti has said that the decisions were not snap decisions, and also in both situations Monti missed the window that would have given the team the best chance to get value.

If you are trying to trade an expensive, vet WR, you do so when teams have the most money available, and not after they have spent it

If you are trying to trade a non-traditional player who is a high level athlete, you don't wait a month into camp after teams have already invested time and energy into their roster. You want to move him when teams feel they have time to figure out how to use him and see him in their systems.

I have verified he would have counted as well.

Yeah, can't legitimately argue Simmons wasn't one of the 51 best players on this roster.
I think he was one of the 51 best players, but the optics of moving him around isn't good. He was tried at a litany on positions and didn't really excel at any of them. Time to move on.

Maybe...but probably wouldn't have contributed much, to be honest. In 2022 the Cards got 3 Comp Picks (6th and 2 7s)...Reddick and Peterson didn't help, because all it took was AJ Green and Prater to cancel them out. They got their picks based on Kenyan Drake, Dan Arnold and Angelo Blackson. Maybe getting a guaranteed pick, even 7th rounder, now is better than hoping he would help with comps.

This is true if you go into the off-season thinking you're going to trade him. Teams don't get extended looks at players until camp. Preseason games are used to confirm or deny your findings. Simmons looked unplayable against the Chiefs. He blew assignments. He missed easy tackles. He confirmed their suscipions they had about him when they moved him to safety...and safety can be a position where if you screw up, the team gets easy scores.

If we're playing Madden this is a dumb move, but the team has no confidence that Simmons can play anywhere now.
