After missing 30 training camp practices and 2 pre-season games, this season is a wash as far as Rivers contributing anything.

especially with my man Drew Breese coming on stronger than ever. The guy is very good, just hasn't had proper coaching. Transitioning from the Big 10 (Purdue, baby!) to the NFL has a lot of huge differences. He's on this year tho, and Mr. Rivers only has a guaranteed 18mil.

his contract was for 6yrs at some 42mil. 18 guaranteed, and then the rest on incentives. something to that effect. looks like pissing away a lot of $$ when they could have gotten a much more beneficial 1st pick of the draft.

Not this year, I don't think. Especially with how good Brees has looked. I think brees will end up like Dilfer--one of the best journeyman back-up QBs in the NFL. A guy everyone wants on their team, but no one wants him to start. He'll never lose a game for you, but won't win it, either (I don't think he's there yet, but will be soon).

Mark it down: Drew Brees will be an Atlanta Falcon in 2005. Rich McKay loves the guy.

Good lord, what a terrible fit for a back-up to Vick, though. May as well have Vinnie T backing him up.

You can't replace Michael Vick. As a WCO guy, though, I think that Brees's quick release and short-field accuracy can be a great benefit to the team.

I also think that the Falcons are going to add more OL help this next offseason.

What do people like about Brees? Admittedly he's had nobody to throw to in his NFL career, but he does have a great RB, and so far he's been pretty poor. Basically a 1:1 TD to INT ratio, 6 YPA, very few big pass plays.

My perception is he can make the short passes, but if he has to go downfield he lacks the arm and gets in a lot of trouble. He hasn't responded too well to the Flutie challenge reportedly. About the only thing to like about his play is he reportedly pissed off Boston(complained his arm wasnt strong enough) which in my mind is a good thing, if David likes you there's probably something wrong with you :)

I just see him as the new Ty/Koy Detmer, not big enough or arm enough to do much of anything. If he's lucky enough to get on a team with a great defense he could be the next Dilfer I suppose.

I was never that impressed with him at Purdue either.

Hey, he's a second-round QB. He's also never had anyone to throw to, and has had two different offensive philosophies in the past four seasons. I don't think the guy is the bee's knees, or anything. I think that he'd make a good backup in an offensive system that won't make him look down the field and take advantage of his quick release. He's kind of the opposite of Dilfer, since Dilfer had the big arm, but didn't have great touch, or anything.

Brees had a big story in SI two years ago when the Chargers got off to that hot start. He is apparently a good on-field leader (or at least was then). Just a solid, young player who hasn't been in the best of circumstances and still possesses some upside.

Drew Brees will be a Falcon next year? Mark it down?

Rookie Matt Schaub came in with the backups for Atlanta last weekend, and overcame the huge defecit built up by Micheal Vicks starters. Head coach Mora proclaimed "Matt will be a starter in the NFL soon."

Are you ready to admit that Michael Vick is the most overrated player in the NFL?

The same Michael Vick who single-handedly willed his team to the playoffs in 2002, and then lead the first team in NFL history to a blowout victory at Lambeau Field? Um... no, I think I'll wait on that.

McKay tried to swing a trade for Brees before the draft this year. It's going to happen. I called the Panthers as a playoff contender well ahead of time last year, and everyone laughed when I said the Vikings were going to make a run at the division in 2003.

How's your boy Gallery working out for the Raiders? Heard he got hurt. Glad we didn't draft that guy.

Good.

So, EVENTUALLY ... you'll admit that Michael Vick is the most overrated player in the NFL.

Glad to see you're coming around.

He's going to play against us. Norv Turner is a pulling a DG there, everyone is saying they like open competition, but it would be nice if they knew soon who was starting. They don't know about Sims/Gallery, Treu/Grove, or even Gannon/Collins.

Based on everything I've read, and what I saw in the first preseason game(Gallery missed the 2nd one), Sims is better than Gallery now, but Gallery will probably play because his upside is quite obviously better than Sims.

He really is surprisingly quick for his size, I can see the Ogden comparisons another big tall guy who is really athletic. Sims is your classic over achiever tough guy, Gallery is much more athletic.

Flash!!! Flash!!!

With all this talk about Brees and Purdue, I'm going to take this opportunity to pimp my hopefully soon to be posted latest addition to my "Coaching connections" write ups.

I "accidentally" stumbled across a whole new "vein of gold",

preview hint = "Jim Sweeney".

I was watching the NFL Network last week, Total Access. Rich Eisen and Lincoln Kennedy were the hosts. They had "Raiders cam" and Lincoln interviewed one of his former linemates on the show.

Lincoln asked him about Gallery. "He's just nasty man, he does stuff even I wouldn't do." Claimed he would cut defenders downfield, poke 'em in the eye, just nasty. Very atheletic, great feet.

Gallery is VERY athletic, like Ogden, they have said he's the one OL the Raiders have who could move to DL and be good.

I haven't heard the nasty stuff but that's what you want in your LT to an extent. That's one of my prime objections to Big, if he had a mean streak he'd be a hell of a lot better player, he should be PUNISHING guys regularly instead of the occasional spike of Mike Brown.

Lex,

Vick........over rated? Of course, it's just your opinion but I think he's a guy who knows how to win......can run like the wind, throws a football better than a Brit in a championship dart game and inspires those around him.

You know what Michael Vick's record as a starter is? 13-8-1, including playoffs.

Anyone who says that his play is overrated has never seen him play. His arm is amazing. Stunning.

Yeah, but people forget that Vick has amazing passing abilities, as well.

FUN FACT!!

Atlanta Falcons:
With Vick as Starter (2003): 3-1
W/O Vick as Starter (2003): 2-10

Philadelphia Eagles:
With McNabb as Starter (2002): 7-3
W/O McNabb as Starter (2002): 5-1

That's actually all he can do :D

He's exciting to watch and he wins games, but he's overrated by many. He has so much potential but it's going to waste because he doesn't read defenses, he would rather take off and run. He needs the practice. He's not accurate and injuries are slowing his progression. He can't keep that up for long. Luckily their new coaching staff realizes this and is trying to change it. We'll see how he does under the new system.

Here's why Micheal Vick is the most overrated player in the NFL.

He's playing out of position, should be a wide receiver.

It doesn't do any good to have a cannon for an arm if you can't hit anybody.

Having great speed makes it much easier to abandon plays, and get out into risky territory. (his team mates will get sick and tired of this)

All we've seen of him for the last two seasons, is him grabbing his hammy.

He refused to help his team out, because he wasn't 100% ready yet.

3-4 wins a season won't cut it in the NFL.

The #1 reason? The Atlanta Falcons had just got a new owner, and the city was not interested in the team. They needed a spark to help ticket sales, so the NFL overhyped Michael Vick to increase interest in the team.

Watch, I predict Michael Vick will be "injured" and on the bench for most of this season.

The problem with Vick is much like Jake, he hasn't shown he can succeed in the pocket. He runs a lot more than Jake, so he gets exposed to hits, and thus is always hurt. Jake is actually a much better pocket player than Vick, just not nearly as dangerous out of the pocket. But Jake has been much more durable than Vick to date.

He has phenomenal talent, is as exciting a player as I've ever seen, ala Barry Sanders, but to be a great NFL QB he's going to have to improve his passing both accuracy and ability to read defenses, 52.2% career is not going to cut it. the guy has started 21 games, and has only 6 games where he's topped 200 yards passing(1 over 300). He's a phenomenal runner and like McNabb forces you to assign a player to him, but he's got to get better as a passer.

right now he's an amazing athlete who is either about to become a superstar, or highly overpaid, depending on how he develops this year.

Michael Vick is the only Quarterback in NFL history to lead a team to road playoff victory at Lambeau Field.

Michael Vick has the best arm and (arguably) quickest release in the NFL. He lead a team with no recieving threats and possibly the league's worst secondary to the NFC Divisional Championship game. He twice-annually embarasses the best front seven in the NFL in the Carolina Panthers.

If Michael Vick can remain healthy (and he played 17 games in 2002), he will re-define the quarterback position in the NFL.

Kerouac-

No, I'm not stoned.

That 3-1 record as a starter last year illustrates my point. 3-4 wins a year won't cut it in the NFL, he had THREE wins last year.

In those 5 games he appeared in last year, he ranked 50th among quarterbacks in passer rating. He also ranked 50th in completion percentage.

FIFTY-ITH. NUMBER 50. The big FIVE O. (there are only 32 teams right?)

Does a great arm and quick release do you any good if your accuracy is 50th among quarterbacks in the NFL?

I will agree with you on one point. Michael Vick WILL re-define the quarterback position in the NFL. Never again will an NFL franchise try to make a quarterback out of a wide receiver.
