I don't even know who the guy is but the entire movie felt like someone knew what the heck they were doing in terms of the essence of Star Trek.

I read where it was designed to apeal to people who've never been fans of the show or movies and I can certainly see that in the film but everything felt very comfortable and familiar about it and it had that feel of one of the great episodes to it, really stretched out of course but it was very well done and whoever is responsible I hope they keep doing them.

Check out Abrams' interview with Charlie Rose. He truly does "get it," by the way. I was merely pointing out how awesome the script must've been to turn him on to the project. He gets that Star Trek is about a hopeful future for mankind. It's not about aliens with pointy ears or special effects -- those are just plot devices.

Just got back from this movie absolutely loved it. The actors did a really good job trying to keep true to the original characters they were playing.

Without giving the plot away, the writing/story allows for no continuity problems with the original series.

That's essentially what I meant, it's just a good story set in a good future, realistic but yet true to our nature.

Star Trek when it's good IMO is just a picture of the human race, good and bad set in a future that makes for new plot lines and he does get that you can reallly tell.

When you factor in what it was designed to be "a prequel" and how much it had to do in a relatively short time it was in a word, awesome.

Fantastic movie. Wow....I can't even begin to put into words how many ways this movie could have gone wrong. I mean, JJ avoided so many land mines I am shocked. I could not have asked for a better reboot of a franchise. The cast choices were fantastic and the use of Leonard Nimoy was awesome.

Honestly, I have only one complaint and it's a minor continuity problem that exists even after this movie (the rest of the continuity concerns are non-existent).

Even after the timeline being altered which in essence makes everything that happened before a non-issue........the Federation should still have had zero knowledge of the Romulans and Romulus. The Federation didn't know about them until much later.

I will say though that because we don't know which future events will unfold the same and which one's differently, JJ could easily bring back other characters like Kirk. It's possible he doesn't die in the new timeline.

I am going to see it again in IMAX this time.

In terms of your spoiler it depends a lot on what timeline you are reading.

According to most the movie is ok by timeline.

Did they mention anything at the beginning about the ship being a Romulus ship? In the altered timeline, they could have discovered the race via them coming and destroying Kirk's Daddy.

I never saw any of the previous Star Trek movies, I did see a couple of New Generation episodes, but I was never really a big fan. I loved this movie, and I'm thinking about going back to see it again.

They knew of Romulans prior. Shortly before the founding of the federation, earth and its allies had a brief war with them. Starfleet, Vulcans, Andorians and Tellorites against them. Enterprise was supposed to do the war in the 5th season and were building to it, but unfortunately it was canceled before they could.

Yeah, how can the Federation not know of the Romulans when they were allies with their sister race, the Vulcans? I'm pretty sure they didn't know much about them, but they certainly knew they existed, and probably knew that essentially, Romulans were Vulcans who showed emotion.

Friggin' great movie, by the way.

Really enjoyed the movies. Certainly one of the best I've seen this year.

I've never been a fan of the Star Trek franchise and never really got into.

But to compare to the other big movies (Watchmen and Wolverine), this is how you introduce characters in movies. The casting seemed to be perfect IMO and there wasn't one moment in the movie where the pacing felt slow.

The story was great, casting was great, and the movie was made beautifully.

It's been a long time since I had seen the episode "Balance of Terror". When I looked the plot line back up, it appears "Kirk" and the crew had no knowledge of what Romulans looked like. Spock had to explain that he "believed the Romulans were an offshoot of the Vulcan race".

So, it appears it's actually not a big continuity issue for the reason I thought. However, Kirk in the original episode along with the crew were stunned to see that Romulans looked like Vulcans. Nobody bats an eye at the Romulans in this new movie. Minor issue but still an issue. The Federation at that time still had never seen a Romulan nor in the new movie did anybody identify them as Rolulans as far as I can tell.

A very minor nitpick and it's still a great movie IMO.

They did identify that it was a Romulan ship that attacked the Kelvin and the klingon fleet mentioned in Uhura's intercepted message. The fact that the surviving bridge crew of the Kelvin saw Nero on the viewscreen introduces the appearance of the Romulans in this new timeline.

In the "prime" timeline the only interaction with the Romulans (per Balance of Terror) was during the Earth-Romulan war where the Romulans used unmanned vessels and the treaties were negotiated via subspace. i.e. they never saw what they looked like.

When the Captain of the Kelvin boarded Nero's ship, he didn't even seem to question the appearance of the Romulans. Neither did the crew on the bridge. There was no reaction whatsoever about them looking like Vulcans (as in the original series). Again, just a minor nitpick. Not a big deal.

Vegas, baby, yeah!
Saw it over the weekend - great movie. Really enjoyed it, thought they managed to give props to the series and still set it off in a new direction.

Granted I have zero knowledge about Star Trek prior to this movie...

But it had been 25 years since Kirk's dad was KIA by the Romulans. Isn't it safe to assume their physical characteristics would be known by then especially by the captain who wrote a dissertation on the attack?

Which I am assuming is why there wasn't a reaction.

That script better win best screenplay at the Oscars. It was brilliant. Best screenplay in a couple of years for me, actually.

I was referring to the 1st encounter with the Romulans not the Enterprise encounter later on in the movie.

In the hopes of putting your mind at ease, I humbly submit a different perspective. Considering that the job of Starfleet is to boldly go where no one has gone before and seek out new life forms, wouldn't they be trained to not react with shock or awe when meeting new life forms? Especially when you consider that the romulans looked very similar to vulcans and humans compared to some of the other creatures on the Kelvin. I'd imagine that the romulans would have to be some of the more normal looking of the creatures they'd encountered, so they'd probably hardly bat and eyelash when Nero showed up.

Just my two cents.
