MJ just reported this.

Jeez, they pumped this up all afternoon. I was hoping for something a little bigger than that. But, I guess maybe I've been spoiled by the tons of Cards news we've had lately.

Great news. I just read Somers say that Butler's been telling his colleagues he's staying in Pitt. Hopefully, that was before the Cards asked for permission.

I would much prefer Butler over Davis or Austin. Davis might not have worked with a ton of talent in SF, but his track record is still worrisome.

I would think this was Whiz's guy all along. Seemed like he wouldn't have pulled the trigger unless he knew he was going to do this.

If we can build a philosophy that is more than just "bend but don't break", I would be overwrought with emotion

Just to sum up the little nuggets.

Butler was given permission to interview here. If we can work out a contract its pretty much a done deal. Pendy was surprised by the decision. MJ stated that Wiz pretty much told him that two years ago he really wasnt able to bring in his guys like he wanted to but now he can, so no hard feelings. Pendy had one year left on his deal that we will still pay him minus what ever he makes in in 2009 with another job.

QB Coach Jeff Rutledge was either let go or wasnt re-signed, not sure which or why.

Word is that Haley wants to bring in Running backs coach Carthon as his OC and Quality Control coach Dedric Ward as his WR coach. Which Wiz probably wont block.

Stated that rumor is that Wiz wants to move Mike Miller(i think he said Mike Miller) to the vacant QB coach and Dedric Ward to WR coach, so Dedric Ward may not be given permission to leave since we are selves will be promoting him apparently.

Rumored the Russ Grimm is the locker room leader to become the next OC.

So if all of the rumors happen we will need -

OL coach or at minimum an assistant for Grimm since he will have 3 duties on his table,
RB coach,
maybe a QB coach or a WR coach depending on what happens with Ward,
Quality Control Coach.

Screw the comments from Boldin that got everyone happy about him softening his stance, But Drew was in town today and Boldin Told Drew to tell the Cards and Drew did in fact tell the Cards that Boldin will not even listen to any offers so dont even bother trying to give him one, and to trade him now. No interest what so ever in a new deal.

I'm hoping for Butler but admittedly the decision is up to the professionals, not the fans. Hiring Butler would indicate that Coach Whisenhunt had a plan all along that he is executing. I could imagine Butler turning down the job if the Steelers' DC job will be available in the near future. Their current DC is 70+ years old.

thats great. Nice to see Tomlin not take the Gruden stance.

after his abysmal performance in Cleveland, losing Carthon isnt a loss at all

First round pick, top 15, and another pick/ player and I take the deal for Boldin in a heartbeat. Boldin is a sham. If Warner wants to pout, he can go too. I question whether signing Warner is a good move. Historically signing a guy at his age is a bad move. The Vikings signed Randall Cunnigham, to an extension after the 1998 season and he flamed the following year. Part of me wants to see what Leinart can do. Leinart could be here for the next 10 years. We know that there is no way Kurt will be. He just seems spent. I just hope he doesn't drag it out. Love Warner, but I think we all need to come to grips with the fact that this may be it folks.

I would be thrilled with Butler.. we need to establish a brand of defense in Arizona that will make us contenders year in and year out..

Our high flying offense is alot of fun to watch.. but without Q moving forward, and Kurt having maybe 1-2 yrs left in his career... we can't build an identity around super offense and mediocre defense...

I look at teams like Pittsburgh, New England, New York, Baltimore, and Philly and see their sustained success (minus 07 for Balt), and the common denominator is a fantastic defensive system, which allows them to plug in talent yr in and year out and get great results..

The sooner we start to move towards fixing this defense and making it top level the great chance we have to be a contender each and every yr..

As I said, if Kurt was 25 or something, then yea, we could live for a long time with the present makeup of the team (awesome O, mediocre to poor D)... however, there will be a time very soon where we're going to see a significant downgrade at the QB position and the defense is going to have to improve significantly to make up for that..

Lets get Butler in here and make a committment to the 3-4 and spend alot of our time on beefing up that unit

A couple of other things with Drew Rosenhaus in town. Besides telling the Cards about Boldin and to Cut James sooner rather then later he was most likely here so he could start the process of working out a new deal for one of or all of - Antonio Smith, Dockett, and Watson.

If true - get Boldin out of here.

Why do I have the feeling that we're undergoing a radical shift, and that this season, as great as it was, is just the start of a long winding road to a solid team year in and year out - but until the changes are all done, it's going to be a very bumpy ride...

He's giving you a summary of an interview on XTRA 910. I caught only the very beginning of it, but joeshmo is reliable.

summing up- get what we can from an afc team in the top 10 of the draft; the #1 and a #1next year plus a #3this year and a young player that whizz and the team agree on. let that team have q's current contract with the understanding it needs to be reworked, [not our problem anymore]but part of the trade language.

Getting back to Butler, if Whiz got permission to interview him then it's a done deal, IMO. Will be a great addition.

I agree, Whis wanted him desperately when he got hired. Now that he's here, its all a numbers game at this point.
