I've done my share of complaining about penny pinching on Sarvers part, but it doesn't make sense here. He has to fill that roster spot anyway. It looks to me like either they want to allow DJ to go someplace where he has a chance, or they want a different type of player (maybe a shooter?) to fill that spot. I could see a Brent Barry type, who could play the point in a pinch and can shoot.

Yeah, the decision to keep DJ or not has nothing to do with money.

With Lopez and Dragic, we are already 10 deep. Whether it's DJ or someone else at the end of the bench, it won't matter since he won't play anyway.

I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that Dragic would beat Strawberry out of the rotation. Right now we have no idea whether Dragic can play in the NBA. Remember, a year ago we were inundated with reports about how much the Suns loved Strawberry and had spent the entire second round trying to move up so that they'd be sure to get him.

Eric may be right, but it sounds like his agent is not convinced the Suns are not committed to DJ enough to sign him now.

BTW, Livingston was on his way to become a solid NBA player (9.3 ppg and 5.1 apg in 29.9 minutes in 2006-07). Is he healthy or is it all smoke. If Livingston really on their radar, it would explain why the Suns might not want to guarantee DJ yet.

He is saying DJ's agent is the one filling the press with doubt, which consequently created this thread discussing said topic.

It looks like a typo on my part. My read on it is that his agent wants to get this tied down before camp and the Suns want to leave their options open. I don't see any reason for the Suns to make a move until camp and there are some interesting possibilities. But Strawberry is not likely to find a better situation than the Suns unless I'm terribly mininformed on how he did in Las Vegas.

Ok this makes sense now.

How can this not be about money, unless they don't want him at all?

They can sign him now. Fill out the roster at 13, then if someone else is available they can sign them too and carry 14.

I think after Dragic was signed the Suns were saying they don't want to carry more than the minimum. But still, I agree with you. Why not sign DJ and grab someone else if the opportunity presents itself? It's better than letting an intriguing prospect like DJ walk to another team.

I agree. Sign DJ to the low price he costs and get another shooter if the opportunity arise.

If they're still high on him give him another chance. Put the money where the mouth is. It's up to him to perform in practice and in any playing time he gets. If his shot and decision making improves over the year we can sign him to a new contract. Maybe he can turn into another Raja Bell or a Bobby Jackson with defence.

OK, I think I get it.

Its about money in that the Suns decided a long time ago to carry only 13 on their active roster.

They have DJ locked up if they want him. Right now they are looking around to see if they can find someone else to fill more of a need. Meanwhile, they are also allowing him to make contact with other teams should the Suns decide not to pick up his option.

If they can't find someone better, they'll sign DJ.
