Newcastle won the Championship to get back to top flight football, which is good.

Newcastle announced they wouldn't spend any new money, which SUCKS.

Wow. If true, they are going to really struggle next season.

I think they're looking at a slow recovery period. The team's been crushed by the money they've spent and are in massive amounts of debt. The fear is probably that, if they spend and don't stay up, they could wind up in administration.

I believe the plan is to survive this season and remain in the Premiership, then aim for making it to mid-table for the next few years. The club said recently that if it kept money relatively even for the next 5 years they'll be solid again financially, and they are keen to develop new talent from the area. I guess they always used to let local boys go to other teams (like Shearer and Carricker, amongst others).

The problem with that was that these players were never on the Mags' books, Carrick and a few others were on came through Wallsend Boys Club but were picked up by other teams. Its a massive ask that any player from the Newcastle area will always be picked up and end up in black and white. I think that its and attempt to manage expectations and that you will have some money to spend on players without having to sell (although its a safe bet Steven Taylor goes for a few million given what went on). You really do have to spend and get 3 or 4 good players to survive though....thats not just a Mackem talking thats fact looking at any team going up to the Prem league.

We shall see, but like i said i think there will be some money there to spend.

I know they didn't have those players, but what I mean is, they don't want those players to get away from the area. I like the idea of heavy recruiting at home.

I'm not sure I agree with your premise that we have to get 3 or 4 good players to survive. It wasn't as much the players that dropped us out of the Premiership as it was the utter chaos and instability.

That said, hell yes, let's get us some new players!

61 pages for a bad team. Wow. :D

59 pages on a great team.....you must have looked at one of the bits about the mags :D

May dad is 70 next week and i have tracked down an old cast iron/wooden seat from Roker Park (the stadium we moved from when we moved to the Stadium of Light) Its a great piece of our clubs history and about 110 years old so hoping it goes down well . Spent my first 20 odd years following Sunderland in there before we moved but may dads still harps on about the days when it they used to get 70,000 in there. Great days.

So I have been trying to get into Premier League Football for a couple years, and know of the relatively large following Sunderland has on this board. I picked up FIFA 10 the other day and played Manager Mode with Sunderland as my team. Fast forward to week 30 or so and I get fired as manager! I lacked serious depth in the midfield and could only score with Kenwyne Jones (If he's really on the team, didn't look it up). Bent had a horrible slump, and the midfield provided 10% of my overall goals.

I think I just suck at the game, but it gave me a chance to see a little bit of Sunderland, and gave me a good idea of how the Premiership works. It was a short-lived but fun virtual experiment.

Oh well, I got hired by Hereford United in the Coca Cola League II... It's a long, hard road back to the top.

Nah, forget about sweating it out with Sunderland...hook up with a true Northern power (well, hopefully soon again) and forget about those little kitty cats. Newcastle United is the way to go.

It won't matter. London and Manchester rule the Premiere league and all Newcastle and Sunderland will be doing is trying to avoid relegation. Again.

I do like the passion though! :D

What are you talking about? There aren't any teams named "London" or "Manchester." What EPL were you watching. :)

Plus, Sundy was almost top ten last year. :)

Ha! I was generalizing, obviously, because let's face it, the only teams competing for the title are from those two cities.

A the moment you are probably right. Very short memory in the grand scheme of things in terms of the top flight of English football though.

Maybe, but as far as I'm concerned, the past doesn't matter.

Buffalo ain't a football power here just because they went to a couple super bowls in the 80s, you know. ;)

As much as I hate Liverpool and hope they won't bounce back it is a bit harsh to say they haven't competed for the title in recent years. They might not have won it but have (besides this last year) finished top 3/4 most years. They were 2nd in 2008-9.

Also, just a side point, but scum (Man U) aren't even from Manchester anyway. They are from Stretford. I think they should be forced to change their name!

And the Coyotes play in Glendale. What's your point?
