Suns.com: Suns Summer Plans

Posted: April 15, 2003

Most of the players on the Suns' roster have made plans to spend the majority of the offseason in the Valley working with the coaching staff to improve in all areas of the game. There will, however, be a brief break in the action where players will go home to visit families, take a vacation or both. Suns.com spoke with seveal Phoenix favorites to find out what they have planned for the summer

Barbosa
SUNS GUARD LEANDRO BARBOSA: "My plan is to stay here and work out, play basketball and learn more things. My family is really sad because they want to see me, they miss me. So, I’m going to see what I can do. If I can go back to Brazil, I go. But I’m staying to work out, I need to work out."

Cabarkapa
SUNS FORWARD ZARKO CABARKAPA: "After the season, I want to go home a little bit. I want to go to the Olympic games with my national team. We start in June with our workouts and I hope I’ll be on the team. If I go to the Olympic games, it will be the biggest in my life. The Olympic games are my dream and I want to be there. Everyone who plays something wants to go to the Olympic games. That’s the biggest stuff in sports. When I started to play basketball, that was my dream."

Johnson
SUNS GUARD JOE JOHNSON: "I’m going to back and forth. I’m going to go home for a little while, work out and just hang out, and chill with family and friends, enjoy a little time off. I do have a vacation planned, I just don’t know where I want to go yet.

"I’ve got a lot more room for improvement, as far as working on my shot, my (ball) handling, getting stronger. I’ve got a bunch of stuff set for me for the summer and I’ve got to get it done."

Lampe
SUNS CENTER MACIEJ LAMPE: "I’ll be here all summer. I’m going on vacation for one week to Mexico and then at the end of April I’m here. All of May I’m here, June I’m here. So, I’m going to be working very hard. I’m going to go see my parents for a week or two and then I’ll be back here."

Marion
SUNS FORWARD SHAWN MARION: "I’m thinking about going to San Tropez. I’m going go to France. I've never been. I hear it's nice. But thre are a few spots I want to go. I'm going to go somewhere overseas. I mean, you don't get to see these place during the year, so this is the only time you get to see stuff like that. I think I might be going to Brazil, too. Those are some long flights, though, man. Hopefully, I won’t have too much free time on my hands; I’ll be maybe a member of the Olympic team. I hope so. I’m just going to play it by ear."

Stoudemire
SUNS FORWARD AMARÉ STOUDEMIRE: "I might go out and visit Barbosa out in Brazil. I want to hang out in Jamaica, take a cruise. I’m pretty sure that will be pretty fun, pretty cool."

"I’ll probably take only a month off and then train on out. I’ll be in Orlando for a month, vacationing. I’ll probably be out in Malibu, Calif. training."

White
SUNS CENTER JAHIDI WHITE: "Just rehab and just get right back out there on the court, and in the weight room, and do everything I need to do to work on my game."

I like the idea that Amare and Marion will be hanging out with Barbosa in Brazil. That's great to see that there is bond between them all. JJ's plans seem a bit vague. Lampe is going to be working his butt off. Over all looks good.

Except Barbosa say's he's not going back! I think he should take at least a week off to go back and see his family, I would think the c's would even recommend that! But I doo admire his work ethic.

I know everyone thinks the Suns need a veteran point guard (it would be nice), but I am not sure Leandro wouldn't beat them out anyway. Considering that he came from a minor league in Brazil, had never played point guard before, didn't know the language, and had only minimal experience before taking over - his performance was just this side of amazing.

Whether he starts or comes off the bench, I think Leandro is going to become one of the most popular players on this team.

I thought I remembered reading a while ago that Barbosa was going to have a basketball camp back in Brazil over the summer and that a few Suns players were going to go down there to help him. Anyone else remember this?

Lampe working out hard is very good news. He showed some signs of being a pretty good player.

Hopefully Zarko won't make his olympic team (he has to try out). He really needs to bust his butt this summer getting stronger and working on his game with real nba coaching. I don't know if he'll play much on his olympic team and the coaching can't be nearly as good.

I'm surprised they didn't have comments from Casey or Jake.

I was kind of surprised that Shawn is considering the Olympics again.

His name has not come up in the press, but the way players keep wanting to bail maybe he has a chance.

As long a he stays healthy, I think it would be good for him to practice against elite players. Maybe he will learn to go baseline. :D

I was kind of surprised also, Chap. Then I started thinking about it. In previous seasons we had talked about how it might be better for him to skip something like the Olympics to get some rest because he seemed tired at the end of the NBA seasons. Then last summer he finally did rest and followed with a worse season.

I'm not sure his worse season wasn't because he bulked up, rather than not participating in the Olympics last summer. I don't buy that as a reason for his poor start.
