Suns release Canaan

We needed to waive Mike James because Canaan was originally brought on as a Two-Way contract. Mike James had his Two-Way contract converted into a real guaranteed contract like a week before he was released. When that was converted we had an open Two-Way spot but no actual roster room. Canaan showed up and outplayed Mike James right from his first minutes on the floor and the Suns waived James to convert Canaan's deal. Right now we already have 1 open roster spot, from Chandler's buy out, and still have 1 open Two-Way contract, since we only signed George King to one in the offseason. So this is different than the James situation unless you want to say that the empty roster spot outplayed Canaan.

How well would Fultz have to play to convince you he'd be worth the nearly 10mil it would cost to retain him next year? I wouldn't really be interested in him unless it was a cap neutral move with him on the roster next year which would require one or more of Anderson, Warren or Jackson. None of which makes sense for different reasons.

Fultz may be able to turn things around and live up to the potential that allowed him to be drafted #1 but I don't see him being able to make that turnaround on this team. The Suns need a proven ball handler not another developmental project.

Yeah. That’s a big negative. And with this team giving three, maybe four rookies extensive minutes I am not sure we are ready for another project player. There is real intrigue with Fultz but this team still has to find its identity. We need to get Ayton on track. That dude went full turtle mode last night.

We don't need another project if he eats 10m in cap space. Can Anderson or another contract be included to offset the 10m? The only way Fultz makes sense is if it doesn't cost anything.

Again, I think the cause and effect is the other way. What passes for the front office thought he shouldn't be on the roster because Igor kept playing him heavy minutes no matter how poorly he played and how much he was hurting the team.

I really, really hope that he doesn't stick around, even with NAZ, such that Kokoskov is tempted to go back to him again. He clearly ingratiated himself with Kokoskov, or Kokoskov just fell in love with him out of nowhere, to the detriment of the team.

I think the club felt they owed him something because of that injury he sustained last year. They wanted to give him a real shot at coming back from it and showing he can make this team.

I don’t know what you do for a living, but if you love it and somebody was willing to pay you a lot of money to do it, would you quit if somebody offered you something that pays far less?

Of course not, but then again I don't expect anyone to gift me a job for which I am not qualified, particularly one that pays me millions, and not hold me accountable for my screw-ups, just because I persevered through some adversity.

If I screwed up at the level Canaan did, I would be disbarred.

I said that in response to someone who said the Suns did the right thing by gifting Canaan a roster spot and extended minutes, despite horrible play, because of the horrible injury he suffered and to reward the hard work he put in just to rehab. Nice story, but not worth throwing the rest of the team under the bus, in my opinion...

If it came to it, and if his ankle is at all contributing to his poor play, there are plenty of lower level jobs he could be offered, such as in the Marketing dept. But, of course, at much much much much much much less than a player's salary, which I would expect Canaan to say, "Thanks, but no thanks."

Then so be it. Still better than sabotaging our team by gifting him an undeserved roster spot and extended playing time just because he is a nice guy who worked so hard to rehab from his gruesome injury.
