Williams, 22, will not earn his way to the NBA with speed or leaping ability but neither did the NBA's more notable "Big Al" – Charlotte center Al Jefferson. Williams ran slow lane-agility and shuttle-run times at the combine but outran Louisville's Bobby Portis and Arizona's Brandon Ashley in the three-quarter sprint.
What he does superbly is well known by "draftniks" and Suns general manager Ryan McDonough, even though few fans noticed him average 17 points and 11 rebounds as a UCSB sophomore in 2012-13.
"When you see guys who rebound like that and maybe aren't the most vertically explosive guys, that usually tells you they have a good feel for the game and positioning," McDonough said. "He's a guy that does his work early. Before the shot is going up or as it's going up, he's already boxing out and holding his guy off to get offensive rebounds and putbacks."
