I would appreciate it if anyone else would from this point refrain from duh-ing me and such remarks. I already explained that I wasn't very familiar with these players. What I appreciate is it being pointed out that Jones must have been guaranteed a starting spot. That settles the issue at once.
Me too.

Jones. duh.

Sorry. Thats how it seems to me.

There is no way he decided to come here unless he starts. Some players want to play. They want recognition. For Tyus, starting with Book, Durant, and Beal could be career-defining. He sees how he fits with that group. My best guess is that our starting lineup is going to be

Pg--Jones--He would not have come without a starting position guarantee.
SG--Beal, 6-4 prototypical starting guard.
SF--Book, 6-6. A bit smallish for a 3 but not too bad.
PF--Durant,-6-11 plenty of size for a 4
C--Nurk, a typical big-bodied center who can pass.

That lineup is long on offense and short on defense. The bench will be

Pg--Morris, Gillespie
Sg--Allen, Okogie, Lee
Sf--Dunn, Bridges
Pf--Bol, O'Neale, Little
C--Plumlee, Oso

Thats the 5x3. Little is trade bait for any kind of return. On paper, this team looks good to me, but it does not matter unless it produces W's.

I would love to see one of the rookies work into the regular rotation, but the best shot at that is probably either Dunn or Bridges, and Bridges seems more likely to me based on his more complete game. If Dunn can get minutes and not be a drag on the offense, that would be a bonus, but that will depend on coaching.
Agree with almost everything except where you’ve got Royce. He’s essentially our best player off the bench. He’ll play ahead of Dunn, bol, and bridges.

It just depends on whether coach agrees with that opinion--that O'Neal should start. That he should play ahead of Bol and Bridges is obvious, but I'm not sure what he wants to do with Dunn. Dunn sounds like such a ruthless, effective defender that maybe coach will want him to start.

And what about the three stars? They have enough influence that if they ask coach to start someone else, perhaps he would.

Royce is not starting, and Dunn is not going to be ahead of Royce in the rotation. Royce is a very good defender, and a good (albeit a streaky) shooter. Jones, Beal, Booker, Durant, and Nurkic will start. Allen and Royce will be the first guys off the bench, followed by Plumlee. That's the eight-man rotation. If the coach wants an actual point guard on the floor most of the time, Morris is probably next. Then you get to Dunn, Bol, Okogie, etc. Dunn will get some playing time but he is not going to be ahead of Royce or Allen in the rotation, and he is certainly not going to start.

The inference based on Jones's comments is that he would be starting. I doubt Ishbia puts that out there with Jones unless he has already talked to Bud. Ishbia has said repeatedly they don't make decisions without James and the coach having a say.

So sorry, I said that only because I mis-read the comment I responded to. I thought he said O'Neal should start. Oops, no--he said he thought O'Neal should not start.

Speaking of good defenders, how is Jones on defense?

He is a little undersized and doesn't have great athleticism, so not very good. He is not terrible, but definitely not good. He is not going to get pushed around, but he can't stay in front of quicker point guards. I'd say that both, Beal and Booker, are better defenders.

When were they teammates?
As to D, Okogie is still the best defender at position 1-3, occasionally 4. Dunn may someday become equal or better, but not now. Defense is absolutely crucial in the current version of NBA. So, Tyus better develops Alvarado, Beverly and Patty Mills def. mentality for a smallish PG, in order to be useful in playoffs. I believe if healthy Monte Morris is a quite good defender there. Booker on team USA proves he is capable to play very good indiv. D except for occasional off-ball lapses. Beal is a better than Book at D. As in today's NBA there are not many off. PF to grind out KD at that position. We have hope.
RO's D is decent but he is just not athletic enough, and his 3pt shots are streaky. I'd rank him regarding playing time about the same as JO and Bol at 3/4, ahead of Dunn and Little. Allen is the 6th man.

I think you’re way overstating JO and Bol’s playing time compared to RO. In fact I’ll estimate that RO plays twice as many minutes in average as either (maybe both combined).

I am looking forward to Morris and Beal teaming up again. Beal played a lot with the second unit, and he and Morris started together in Washington. That should be good for our bench.

Agreed, we all know what Okogie is, a fringe rotation guy whom if he has a hot spell on offense might see some action for a while. Bol is a situational player, there are a ton of matchups where he just flat out won't see the floor, and even when he does see the floor, he will get himself quickly yanked if he struggles.

Bol has some strengths, but even there, he's inconsistent, one night he defends well, the next he gets lost on play after play, he also has some massive weaknesses and in those regards he's pretty much always terrible. He cannot defend outside, he cannot dribble (even though he reeeeally wants to) and he can't shoot unless it is from very specific areas.

I think Bol will, again, be on a short leash, and quite often, not play at all if the other team has matchups that force him to defend outside.

I will be surprised if Dunn is not a better defender than Okogie almost immediately. He has Okigies speed and instincts but in a better more versatile body. Dunn just seems like a smarter player. Okogie is a Tasmanian Devil. It’s almost all effort. Dunn is taller. Both are surprisingly long, but that is a common characteristic of good defenders.

Didn’t mean to offend. I could have said,

Jones is the very obvious choice.

But I am typing with my thumbs and “duh” was a lot easier.

Agreed. Okogies defense is always walking the line between defense and outta control foul. Sometimes it leans to the latter. I get the impression Dunn is more controlled.

It's a good signing and probably adds a few wins, but this team is going nowhere as long as 36-year-old Kevin Durant is their #1 player. The best-case scenario is that Durant goes down with an injury for a couple of months, the team develops chemistry without him, and then he gets reincorporated as a supercharged role player.

I would have to imagine that we will see a heavy does of Jones in the 4th quarter to mitigate that. By default, that should improve our defense when you are not giving up easy buckets from turnovers on the other end.

It is probably reverting to the mean if KD is out for a couple months anyway. He was lucky health-wise last season. I agree with your take. But it's kind of hard to imagine many wins without him though. Just not a ton of fire-power on this team unless they finally realize (for a change) that they have the best 3 point shooter in the league on their team and start setting up plays for him. Seems GSW did that with their 3 point shooting specialist.

If you can't offer a lot of money, offer a lot of role. But you better keep your word. I would tell him that the starting point guard position is his to lose. He can have it, but he will have to work to keep it because other players will be pushing.
