It sounds like the Suns will be getting a first team All-American guard for their summer league team per Paul Coro in an article dated 6-26-2010 at azcentral.

Four first-team All-Americans were taken in the NBA draft's top five picks Thursday.

The Suns apparently have the other. Villanova guard Scottie Reynolds, the first undrafted All-American since the 1976 NBA-ABA merger, is expected to join Phoenix's summer league team.

Reynolds averaged 18.2 points and 3.3 assists as a senior to become Villanova's No. 2 all-time scorer but his size (listed at 6 feet 2) and point-guard skills left him undrafted.

I think he is a good pickup as a FA.

Sounds like another LB, but he sounds intriguing, especially for an undrafted rookie.

The summer team, playing July 9-15 in Las Vegas, also includes returnees Earl Clark and Taylor Griffin, second-round pick Gani Lawal of Georgia Tech, 2009 summer Suns point guard Zabian Dowdell and rookie free-agent guards Matt Janing of Northeastern and Marcus Johnson of Southern California. The Suns' other second-round pick, Dwayne Collins of Miami, is coming off June 18 minor knee surgery.

No Dwayne Jones, which is interesting.

Good catch. I wonder if it was an omission error.

Highlights for Scottie Reynolds. My initial take--crafty player with lots of interior twisting turning stuff. He's kind of like Dragic that way. Looks like he has some range but a highlight reel doesn't show you misses. Definitely has some pg skills as far as a passer. He is obviously small and reasonably fast, though not close to Barbosa. He looks like an annoying defender and ball hawk. He doesn't have the size to body up, but will get some steals.

He will do well in summer league.

I'm not sure how the summer league works, but mostly they have first and second year guys.

Jones entered the NBA in 2005 and played 14 games with the Celtics. He played in only 4 games with the Cavs in 2006-07, but played in 56 games in 2007-08 where he had 2.5 rpg in just 8.4 minutes per game.. He only played 6 minutes with the Bobcats in 2008-09.

In a sense, his resume is much like that of Amundson.

He was in the NBDL for much of last season, so that might also have something to do with it. I am unaware of the rules as far as eligibility for summer league. Do you have more information the rest of us don't?

Anybody hear who Mac Koshwal from Depaul is playing for? I was hoping he'd get a look as it seemed the Suns were intrigued by him according to Coro. He's probably an unlikely candidate with us drafting two power forwards, but he could create some competition and at 6'10" might be able to earn a spot as a 2nd/3rd string center.

I guess his game does seem a bit redundant with Lawal and Collins on board.

It looks like the Suns could use another big for summer league while Dwayne Collins heals. So bring him in.

Marcus Johnson: His stat lines are underwhelming but his write up is a bit intriguing even though it is outdated. http://www.nbadraft.net/players/marcus-johnson

Matt Janning: I can't write-ups on DX or nbadraft.net, but here is a stat line. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=31927

So far: Dowdell, Reynolds, Janning, Griffin, Clark, Johnson, Lawal, Collins(injured?)

The roster as it stands is lacking a true center. I hope Dwayne Jones is added to the roster, but I'm not sure about his eligibility.

edit: Nbadraft.net has Dwayne Jones listed on our summer league roster! http://www.nbadraft.net/2010-nba-las-vegas-summer-league-game-schedule-rosters close to the bottom of the page.

He must have been removed because he's not on there anymore.

He was just on there. They must have updated it right after I linked it. I see they added Johnson, Janning, Dowdell, Reynolds, and placed an asterisk next to Collins. That sucks!

I really hope EC has an outstanding summer, gaining some confidence and a jumper.
Does anyone recall how he did last summer?

No but all I remember is that when he went down to the d league during the season, he tore it up.

Its a confidence thing. If he finds it like Lopez and Dragic did, Clark will be just fine

Scottie Reynolds

I'm both a Villanova fan (alum and season ticket holder living in Philly) and a Suns fan, so I thought I'd give you my perspective on Scottie Reynolds, in case anyone was interested, having watched him for 4 years.

He's not going to be a point guard. He's not a great penetrator, as far as dribbling through traffic to the hoop. Actually, he never impressed me that much as a passer either, nothing remarkable.

That being said, he's just a very productive player. He shoots well -- 50.0% in Big East play last year, which for a guard I think is rather amazing, especially when almost half his shots were 3-point shots, of which he made 42% (conference stats). He has a good mid-range jumper and picks his spots well. He knows how to draw contact when he goes to the basket and get to the line, and when he's there he's an 84% FT shooter. He isn't a ball hog or a chucker, he plays within the team. But when our team was down and needed a lift, it was usually Scottie who turned the tide.

Defensively, he's only ok, to be honest. He defends with a lot of heart and hustle, but he's not a lockdown defender by any stretch. His steals were usually chances he takes on passes darting into passing lanes, not pickpocketing his man.

He's probably the type of guy that if you watched guys play one-on-one, he'd look like he was among the least talented, but then put him on a side and his team would win the game and he'd be the best player.

He seems like he's very smart, a hard worker, very coachable, and knows how to take advantage of the defense when they make mistakes. Not a lot of raw talent, but does his job well.

Since every team needs to have 11th and 12th players who usually don't play many minutes anyway and are mainly practice guys, he'd be a good fit. He won't get into any trouble and hopefully his effort and determination will be contagious.

Nice post. He sounds like an improved version of Eddie House so I'm sure he'll find a fit in the NBA... if teams look at what he can do instead of what he cannot do. I'll be rooting for him. He did something right to become a first team All-American. Also his being smart and coachable helps his cause.

i always loved scottie reynolds and hoped that he'd develop pg skills. he never did. but the reason i loved him was that he was toughnosed, high IQ, and a winner. if the team needed a play, it was usually scottie that came up with it. and this was not for a loser, low level squad, this was for a final four squad 2 years ago. nice add for the summer league. has a shot to stick deep on our bench.

Including Reynolds and the Suns two second round picks, I think there is a real chance that 2-3 of these players stick with the Suns. I don't think the Suns were planning for this to happen but the chips may have fallen just right.

unfortunately as much as i hope that they end up being good players, if that DOES happen i think it's a bad sign for the health of this team . . .

I'm thinking Dwayne Collins may be the Suns third string center and the Suns do not pick up their option on Dwayne Jones. IMO, Taylor Griffin and Jason Collins are gone anyway.

And a good sign for our lottery pick in 2011.

The players I'm talking about are like end of the bench players so I don't think it has lottery implications. Anyway the lottery is such a crapshoot. Why be so eager to get there?

I think he did great in a game or two and either sat out or disappeared in a few others. The Summer Suns had the last game vs the Clippers and he played outstanding defense on #1 pick Blake Griffin.

Before the summer league (or just after?) there was a lot of reporters saying it would be hard for the Suns not to play him (mainly) because of his defense. The same reporters also doubted we'd make the playoffs so they're right maybe half the time, maybe less.

I hope he's worked hard and shows up with a lot of confidence.

Go Clark!! :clapping:

If Amare walks Clark is going to get alot of time. Gentry really likes him and was frustrated he could not seem to get him more minutes.

It appears that Dwayne Collins will travel with the team but likely won't play, and that Dwayne Jones will not participate for whatever reason.
