One-on-One with Aaron Brooks

By Brad G. Faye, Suns.com

Apparently, it’s a very good time to be a duck. Just days after the Anaheim Ducks took home the Stanley Cup Championship, Oregon Duck Aaron Brooks was in Phoenix, enjoying an impressive pre-draft workout with the Suns.

Brooks - who earlier this year was named to the John Wooden All-American team - showed exactly why many feel he’d be a perfect fit in the Phoenix offense. The six-foot guard displayed his jumper, his ability on the defensive end of the floor and of course, his speed. Those tangibles are a key reason why the youngster has drawn comparisons to other speedy shooters including Chicago’s Ben Gordon and former Phoenix Sun

Eddie House.
Following his pre-draft workout with the Suns, the Phoenix media were able to do something most of the Pac-10 failed to do throughout most of his college career – slow him down.

Question: Can you talk about how you think it went today?

Aaron Brooks: I think I did pretty good. I showed them my speed and that I can also shoot the ball.

Question: How well do you feel you would fit into the Suns’ run-and-gun system?

Brooks: Phoenix likes to get up and down so it’s a great system for me. I think it would definitely be a great fit. They like to get out and run, shoot the ball and that definitely fits my game.

Question: Who in the league would you compare your game to?

Brooks: I don’t want to compare myself to the great Steve Nash so I’m going to have to compare myself to Tony Parker and TJ Ford but with a better jumpshot.

Question: Have you stood out in any workouts to the point you may have an idea where you’ll be drafted?

Brooks: These things are really tricky. You just have to put your best foot forward and hope that a team likes you. I just want to give each team my best showing. I don’t know if I’ll go first or second round, but I know I can play in this league and that’s the mentality you have to have.

Question: What has been your number one priority throughout these workouts?

Brooks: Just proving that I’m capable of playing at this level. People think because of my size that I can’t play at this level, but I think I’ve got enough heart and will to get better and drive in this league so nothing can stop me.

Question: What would you say to those who look at your size as a disadvantage?

Brooks: I think that the NBA has kind of shifted to a smaller man’s game. I think we saw that from Golden State this past season and the Suns these past few seasons. It’s become a quicker game and that suites the way I play.

Question: Do you feel playing in the PAC-10 during your college career was an advantage to you in any way?

Brooks: I think it allowed the Suns to see me a little bit more. I think the East Coast teams go to bed a little earlier and don’t get as good a chance to see the West Coast college teams play. I think teams out west had better opportunities to see me play.

Question: You and new Suns General Manager Steve Kerr were talking a little basketball following the workout. Any Pac-10 talk involving your Oregon Ducks and his Arizona Wildcats?
Brooks: (Smiling) We got them two out of three this year but Arizona whooped on us for two or three years so it’s finally good to get back at them.

I read somewhere that he doesn't see the court well and seems to have tunnel vision. This didn't sound good to me.

Aaron Brooks

This guy is so undisiplined it's pathetic. He jacks up and forces shots all over the court. Think shot before passing to a wide-open teammate. He is the anti-Steve Nash and I would be shocked if the Suns seriously consider him.

I love AB. However, I've been going to the UofO for the last couple years so I'm a little biased. But what I can say is that he certainly is a shoot first point guard. Secondly, his improvment from last season to this this season was unreal. The kid can flat out shoot and as far as him having tunnel vision, I'd agree with that if you were talking about the AB from last year but this year he has gotten much better. I don't think Ernie Kent is a good coach at all, and if he got some good coaching he could be really great. He has tuck loads of potential, he just needs someone like dan dantoni to work his magic like he did with LB.

Ah that is a very good question.

George it is pretty simple...

Trade stuff goes in here. All of it.

Non trade stuff in main forum. All of it.

George just wants to start every thread on every forum that has anything to do with the Suns.

When I saw the thread title, I thought it was a joke. Aaron Brooks the worst QB in the NFL just might be better off trying out the NBA.

Being a a ducks fan and following the ducks this past year, Brooks was the Duck that signal handly took over many of there games. He can score when he wants to, but what made him good was he played unselfish, there was many games he more than 6 assists, But he knew we needed to be selfish and drive to the hole, or shoot the 3. He was the main reason for the Ducks run to the elite 8 this year.

eh, at best i think brooks is eddie house part deux.

House is a much better shooter though. Brooks is much quicker and better with the dribble but he's not a pure PG, shot first all the way.

But most Pac 10 fans like him because he sucker punched(forearm really) Ryan Appleby of UW in the Pac 10 tourney 2 years ago and unless you're a UW fan, you HATE Appleby.

Brooks reminds me of Robert Pack except he's a better shooter and much skinnier. His game is all first step off the dribble.

That was awesom, Appleby elbowed him twice before that in the face.

Yep. The reason Appleby is so hated is his damn followthrough on his shot, he hits a three and holds his hand up in the wave goodbye mode, and then backpedals downcourt on defense, plays defense, and a minute later he's still got the damn hand up in the air(exaggerating for effect).

Reggie Miller got hit a few times in his career for that same thing but Appleby is about as bad at it as anybody I've ever seen. In fact if I'm not mistaken he actually got a T for it last year for taunting?

I thought it was a cheapshot and he deserved the ejection and suspension, but I fully understand why he did it, Appleby is like Ginobili he brings out the worst in people.

I pull for all the Pac 10 guys my fear with Brooks is he's too skinny he'll get beaten down in the NBA.
His 3 point % took a quantum leap this year largely IMHO because they went to that spreadcourt system where nobody could defend all their quick guards so teams just backed off. He has NBA range and he can take you off the dribble but on an NBA team they won't be in that system(the Suns spread the floor somewhat like that) and we'll find out he's not nearly as good a shooter when there is a hand in his face?

I always judge guys by how they play against UCLA and he just about single handedly beat us the first game at Oregon, he made every big shot including the game winner. We handled him the rematch but we doubled him and took the ball out ofhis hands.
