For all the 4-3 defenses out there, and quasi 3-4 defenses with nickel packages.
Are Kawann Short, and Star Lotulelei the best pair of defensive tackles in the NFL ?
It is a better discussion than you would think. At first it was a no brainer, but that was a reactionary opinion I had before I thought about it. Granted, Lotulelei is a ridiculously powerful man, just that in itself puts him tops in the league, just by how strong he is, then Kawann Short, who I really didn't know about, and watched some highlights.........Holy Moly. How a man that big and strong is that quick on his feet, and his hands are mind blowingly impressive. You cannot get a hand on Short, and then he is faster off the snap than most players, and on top of that if you get a hand on him he is strong enough to just walk through it.
BUT, are they better than:
Jets: Sheldon Richardson/Muhammed Wilkerson
Bills: Kyle Williams/Marcel Darius
Vikings: Lindvel Joseph/Shariff Floyd
To be honest I think the Jets tandem, when healthy and not speeding down highways may be better, but not by much.
And I am just talking tandems. You can say that if you put Kawann Short and Muhammed Wilkerson together that would be the best tandem in the NFL.
Until some says, what if you put Aaron Donald and Geno Atdkins next to each other.
Regardless, I was having this conversation, and it occurred to me and my friend, the NFL has some ridiculous talent at defensive tackle in this current generation.
Calais Campbell is our best defensive lineman, I do not think he would be in the top 10, when all is said and done, and the talent ahead of him would be good enough to not insult Campbell. Plus Campbell is not really a TRUE defensive tackle. JJ Watt is a "DE" but he could easily be put on this list, and he is.
In no particular order:
1. Aaron Donald
2. Muhammed Wilkerson
3. Kawann Short
4. Geno Adkins
5. Sheldon Richardson
6. Gerald McCoy
7. J.J. Watt
8. Star Lotulelei
9. Ndamukong Suh
10. ? Calias Campbell ?
Regardless, the point is, there is a LOT of big time talent on that list.
