That was my favorite first episode in awhile.

Was hoping the whites would lose last night so they could get rid of "Flicka" who stupidly lost their chickens.

Looks to be a good season, Jeff is still the best reality show host by far.

Yeah, that flicka chick was a moron! When she was going over to the box, I was thinking "what the hell is she doing?" Dumb!

I really enjoyed the premiere. Thought they handled the race thing well. Kinda nice to see everyone taking it pretty lightheartedly. Thought it was funny when the white chick said "Go whities" or something like that.

Will be interesting to see how things pan out once the tribes merge.

That guy Sekou was hysterical, couldn't start fire, didn't know what he was doing building etc, but he says he hopes the tribe learned from him? Hello they voted you off for a reason, you were lazy. I loved when he told the one woman that if he was gone they wouldn't have fire "but we don't have fire now." And of course jeff gave them flint at tribal council.

Looks to be a good season, Jeff is still the best reality show host by far.

Classic Episode! My wife being Filipino is already rooting for the Asian tribe. That headache cure thing that cowboy did was hilarious. Everyone was making fun of the big red spot it left.

I think there will be two merges.

First they will merge the 4 tribes to 2 tribes.

Then they will finally merge to one tribe.

Yeah I think I'd rather have a headache than a big red mark on my head.

SPOILER - Sorry about the long post, I sometimes babble

So in the South Pacific's Cook Islands our castaways have been divided into four tribes based on ethnicity with producers classifying the show as a "social experiment." So with my metaphoric lab coat on, I sat down to watch.

As a viewer who is part of a represented group, I immediately found myself rooting for "my tribe," whereas in the past I had to warm up to players over a few weeks. On one hand it's nice to get right into the game, but on the other hand you realize you've been manipulated by the show. I'm still drawn to the most interesting players, and that crosses racial boundaries. In the end, I suspect that's how the show will play out for most viewers, but since they want us to, let's break it down.

Aitu, Latino: J.P., Billy, Ozzy, Cecilia and Cristina
Right off, Ozzy and Billy make the biggest impressions, Billy mostly for his bamboo-breaking technique and Ozzy for pointing out Billy's bamboo-breaking technique. I don't think Cristina spoke during the first three days, which in Survivor editing can only mean she makes it to the final four. J.P. has a lot to say, but I don't remember any of it. Cecilia may be the player on this team.

Hiki, African-American: Rebecca, Sekou, Stephannie, Sundra, Nate
This tribe found its rhythm quickly, breaking off into two pairs, leaving Stephannie the odd one out giving her the most powerful position in the group; she also looks like a strong player. Sekou, Is just out, early leaders rarely make it to final tribal and if you're going to tout yourself as the man who makes fire, maybe you should learn to make a fire.

Puka, Asian: Cao Boi, Yul, Becky, Brad and Jenny
Cao Boi is a little out of place in his tribe. It's not his flowing salt-and-pepper locks, tattoos or old-world charm. It's that he tested the wind with the spit-on-the-finger trick. Yul, Jenny and Becky are not even having any of Cao Boi's tricks like pulling the "bad wind" out of Brad's head. Say what you will, Cao Boi cured Brad's headache. He gets props for that.

Raro, Caucasian: Jessica, Jonathan, Candice, Parvati and Adam
Everyone is really young and hard-bodied on this tribe. OK, Jonathan's a little older, but he did steal a chicken. We all saw him do it, and it got him sent to Exile Island. I wonder if the others knew Jessica freed the chickens leaving Raro with no meat at all. I'm not sure what's up with this tribe, did they build a shelter or just opt to huddle in the cuddle puddle? This could come back to haunt them later on. Like when it rains.

Jeff is really pushing the social-experiment thing. After the first Survivor challenge — a three-part fire, boat, puzzle thing that Puka won and Hiki lost — Jeff pointed out that the Hiki men took charge of choosing who would be sent to Exile Island while the Hiki women watched in silence. Two comments: 1) Jeff, you're smoother than that, and 2) I hope all the amateur sociologists out there took note. Even though he was the obvious choice for banishment, Jonathan was completely surprised that he was exiled. Hiki went off to tribal council where, in a fairly predictable move, they voted Sekou off the island.

That's why Jeff is such a great host though, he will call people out or point things out just because it appears necessary to him. I think he goes about as far as you can without influencing the outcome of games and it makes the show better especially at tribal council when he does it.

It was interesting that only the 2 guys went forward to discuss it, if I had to guess why it's because the 3 women didn't want whoever got voted to exile island to hold a grudge against them.

Taking me awhile to get into this season. I was surprised the Hispanic team resorted to throwing a competition that early in the show but it did appear that Billy was pretty lazy and when he blurts out completely out of nowhere he's in love with one of the members of the "caucasian" team you had to wonder if he's not all there? That was just bizarre they were standing next to each other after the competition, she says something like sorry you guys lost we love you guys, he says I love you too, I'm next. And then at Tribal council he tells Jeff he loves her and she loves him, very bizarre I don't know if he was bluffing trying to sway the vote or if there was something else going on, truly bizarre, Jeff could hardly contain his laughter.

That whole love comment thing was pretty funny. You know Jeff is going to ask that chick about it.

I think they were stupid for throwing the competition that early. You never throw a competition. He could have been their insurance card for when they did lose a challenge out right. Now if they lose again they will seriously be handicaped.

I need to learn that headache treatment that leaves a red spot on your forhead. It cracks me up everytime I see him leave that mark and the person is like I have this stupid mark but my headache is gone.

I'm not Chinese and I'm rooting for them. :)

They seem to have all their figurative duckies in a row. Yul's discovery of that hidden immunity idol was impressive even with the editing.

That was impressive I am sure the editing made it look better but the way he drew that x and then dug up the idol was pretty cool.

I think it takes me awhile to get into the show every season because at the start there's just too many people involved so you don't get "attached" to them until it's been a few weeks and there's a few less people to follow.

Amazing Race and Big Brother are the same way for me, full cast is too many people for me to care about takes a few eliminations before I really get into it.

So far I like the race element though because it's creating new dynamics.

Did anyone else rewind, so they could see what she actually said to Billy? That was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on that show.

I can't remember it exactly, but it went something like this...

Billy: "I'm the next to go. I'm on the chopping block"

the girl (sympathetic) : "ohh, well we love you."

Billy (completely serious and straight faced): "I love you too"

I laughed almost as hard as I did at the kissing scene in The Office.

Yeah I rewound too Joe Mama was a very weird moment now that you go back and look at it. I was saying to my wife that was weird how he said it the first time, and then the council thing happened and I was cracking up. Wonder if that guy was all there? Seriously that was a little strange.

No middle-eastern group. :( I like Survivor and think this was a good idea. I have enjoyed the first two shows. Last season was pretty boring but this got me back to watching it. Asians are smart, he was the 2nd one on the island and he found it. :p

Good show last night I like that they mixed up the teams already with a semi merge and I like how they did it.

Loved the twist after the immunity challenge with one person going to exile island especially since it nearly messed up a new alliance.

The reaction from Candice when they told her what Billy had said about loving her was classic, "no, really? no, huh?"

The only bad thing is they voted out one of the hotter women on the show.

I agree Russ. She was the only hot one imo. Maybe it was my years in Catholic High School but whenever I see a hot hispanic girl I fantasize about her in plaid skirts :)

I think the merge was not planned. They didnt see anything of real value in splitting them up by race so they nixed it. Anyone else get that feeling?

I had a feeling that the Merge was coming. However I thought that they would just merge two of the tribes into one and the other two tribes into another one.

That's what I was expecting too, the way they did it made it tougher to maintain alliances which I'm sure was the goal.

So my question from last night, if Becky had gotten the most votes could yul have saved her with the idol? Jeff said something like if your name has the most votes and you have the idol, you can save yourself and the person with the 2nd most votes is gone. Does that mean you can't use it for someone else as Yul promised Becky he would if it came to that to save her(before he knew she was even in trouble)? Assuming he could have done it and saved her it would have resulted in the same person who went home anyways, but Yul wouldn't have the idol.

I was really trying to figure out why he told her that so early in the game, why did he think she was a key ally, or was he trying to get an in with her for an after Survivor hookup?

I was wondering the same thing. I don't know if you can give away the idol this time around. I would think so but Jeff's comments did get me thinking about it.

They already had a pretty solid alliance so he felt very comfortable telling her.

You can give the idol to her before the Council or sit close enough to her to slip it to her point being you have to have it in your own possession. Meaning Yul could not stand up and say I have and want to save becky he would just have to slip it too her before that point.

That's just it, why would he have to slip it to her? Everyone knows that she hasn't been to Exile Island so it would be obvious that she wasn't the one who found it.

Actually the rule is that he would have to give her the idol before the Tribal Counsel meeting. It is highly unlikely that would ever happen of course because that would put the original holder in a bad position because of course if he had the most votes he then would not be able to use the idol.

That was great that guy thinks he's got everything under control and he's running the show and they totally blindside him at tribal council.

Talk about owned and at least he was man enough to admit they fooled him and didn't get all bitter about it. But come on when you're admitting to Jeff at council that you will tell people what to do "and sometimes I'll even tell them I'm going to take a nap", you know you're too comfortable.
