Tailgating at Cards stadium: Lot H, no charcoal grills

Tailgating at Cardinals Stadium will be focused on the more than 20 acres of grass area that surrounds the venue.

That's where the Arizona Cardinals are hoping fans will set up their no-charcoal grills, shade tents and pre-game gatherings for the upcoming season at the $455 million stadium in Glendale.

A look at the newly released parking and tailgating guidelines also shows how early the 14,000 parking spaces outside the stadium will be opened, how fans can tailgate and what will not be permitted.

It's the first look at what 63,000 fans will be allowed to do before and after each of the 10 Cardinals home games. They only regulate what fans can do on the land directly outside of the stadium. About 7,200 spaces are located on the Westgate City Center, which houses Glendale Arena. Team and Westgate City Center officials were still working on parking rules for those spaces on Tuesday.

Glendale officials have said that tailgating will be allowed on parking Lot H, a the third parking lot found at the northwest corner of Glendale and 91st Avenues.

The Cardinals are working to mail the parking guidelines to ticket holders. In them, the team lists 19 bullet points for fans to follow.

Peppered throughout the document is reference to "The Great Lawn." That's an eight acre patch of grass located at the west central side of the stadium. It's the largest concentration of grass in the parking area. Fan are being encouraged to tailgate there and the other smaller patches of grass, following a few set limits.

One shade tent per group will be allowed on the grass, for example, but roping off sections of the lawn will not.

Other highlights of the rules include; the stadium's parking lots will be opened four hours before kickoff and closed one hour after the game. Overnight parking and charcoal grills are prohibited.

All vehicles, including motorcycles, will be required to have a parking permit. There will be no paid parking on game day. Permits will be distributed by the team to ticket holders.

All oversized vehicles, such as RVs, will be parked on Lot F. That lot is the youth sports field at the far southwest corner of the parking lot. Fans will need a special parking pass for that lot.

Dustin Holmes, of Tucson, said fans will be happy to hear shaded tents and grilling will be allowed outside the stadium. Holmes, a season ticket holder, said fans had wondered if the team would force them to purchase food from vendors and eliminate the home cooking aspect of tailgating.

That didn't happen. After listening to the guidelines, Holmes said fans shouldn't expect much of a difference from the tailgating experience in Tempe.

"I think this is going to be awesome for fans," said Holmes, who is considering buying a new grill that hitches to his truck. "It's going to go real smooth. They have plenty of parking out there."

Confusing write-up. I have to assume that tailgating will be allowed around the stadium AND in parking lot H?
