IMO Towers is making a pseudo bid as a PR move.

I'll believe that bid when I see it. That merely says we were supposedly willing to pay Choo 140 mil (which terrifies me) and the writer speculates that could instead be swapped to Tanaka, we have not actually made any bid so far.

- None of us have ever seen Tanaka pitch but we're all willing to pledge a lot of money/years to him for a team that cannot recover if he fails.

- I love Bradley, but his claim to fame so far is that he pitched very well in AA Southern League. He's never thrown for more than 152 innings in a year. He could be the next Roger Clemens. Or, he could be the next Andy Benes. Keeping him against trading for established No. 1 starters is as much of a gamble as trading him for one.

- David Price gets you, say, 9 WAR for the next two years, at least. That's probably worth $15 to $20 million.

If the goal is to win now, and I suggest Towers has forced it that way, I say go all in on David Price and get this going now. Waiting for the Tanaka outcome only delays the inevitable and takes away the D-Backs' negotiating power.

Whatever your opinion is on Tanaka it is exciting that the Dbacks are willing to play ball. IF...an that's a big if, he and Bradley do both turn into what they have the potential to be, this 1, 2, 3 of Tanaka, Bradley, Corbin would be the best in the MLB and allow us to compete the the Dodgers for the best in the NL.

They're all gambles, Price last year had a WAR of 2.8, 2.4 in 2011. But going for Price is paying double what we would for other targets. He is likely the costliest target to trade for and probably the most expensive to extend. We could probably trade for Sale AND sign Tanaka with the same cost in players and salary that Price would come out to.

Well, I shouldnt say they're "all" gambles. Paying 140 mil for Chin Soo Choo... and 0 time all-star who needs to be platooned... thats not a gamble, its flushing money down the toilet.

I believe having a former teammate of his on the staff is what has been leading to this. We might already have the inside track.

The nice part is they can post the $20mil bid, to try and negotiate with him, and if it doesn't work out they get it back. His contract will be $30-40mil lower than Dice-K and Darvish cause they limited the posting fee to $20 instead of the $50+ and $60+ the Rangers and Red Sox paid to the Japanese teams.

If we can get him for 5-6yrs at 15mil or so, without losing Bradley....they could end up with a SCARY rotation, especially if Miley continues to do what he has done since he came up minus May of this year. He pitched great this year from June on, and there isn't a better #4 starter in the majors should we get Tanaka. Tanaka/Bradley/Corbin/Miley/Me is even a scary rotation.
