Darvish chose Texas so I wouldn't take it as a given.
Thinking about their Chinatowns and Japantown, you just made my mouth water for a Chinese dish; tempura and a Japanese steak dinner; sushi; dim sum; or a Korean hibachi at the table to cook your own beef. Mmmmm! I could eat delicious Asian food for a week.Or San Francisco.
Darvish chose Texas so I wouldn't take it as a given.
BTW, I read something last week that said he threw over 130 pitches in half of his games last year. I cannot remember where I read it, but if true, that is a lot of wear and tear on that arm already.
Latest On Masahiro Tanaka
Competing executives view the Mariners as a real threat to land Tanaka, tweets ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. The industry perception, says Stark, is that Seattle can make one more big splash to accompany its signing of Robinson Cano.
Based on his own conversations with industry sources, Baseball America's Ben Badler agrees that Seattle is the odds-on favorite amongst the ten most likely landing spots. Badler believes that the team has the strongest blend of need and available cash with respect to Tanaka. The other top contenders for Tanaka are the Yankees, Dodgers, and Cubs, says Badler, while the Tigers figure as a "sleeper" team and "lurkers" include the Rangers, Blue Jays, Diamondbacks, Red Sox, and Angels

IMO Towers is making a pseudo bid as a PR move.
"It was never our plan to go into the season with the same group of starters we had last year. We pursued several top players but in the end we had to stick with what we've got."
- None of us have ever seen Tanaka pitch but we're all willing to pledge a lot of money/years to him for a team that cannot recover if he fails.
- I love Bradley, but his claim to fame so far is that he pitched very well in AA Southern League. He's never thrown for more than 152 innings in a year. He could be the next Roger Clemens. Or, he could be the next Andy Benes. Keeping him against trading for established No. 1 starters is as much of a gamble as trading him for one.
- David Price gets you, say, 9 WAR for the next two years, at least. That's probably worth $15 to $20 million.
If the goal is to win now, and I suggest Towers has forced it that way, I say go all in on David Price and get this going now. Waiting for the Tanaka outcome only delays the inevitable and takes away the D-Backs' negotiating power.
Paying 140 mil for Chin Soo Choo... and 0 time all-star who needs to be platooned... thats not a gamble, its flushing money down the toilet.
Talk about good news/bad news-
Good - we have $140 mil to pay a player
Bad - we'll blow it on an aging player who can't hit LHP
Looks like that PR bid will be $120 million plus the $20 million posting fee. Too bad we were not willing to make a real bid.

That's the amount I pretty much predicted. He is going to fetch a premium, question is how far is ARZ willing to go?
Far enough to sign him.
We shall see. They have a lot of competition with deep pockets to beat out.
I believe having a former teammate of his on the staff is what has been leading to this. We might already have the inside track.
You do realize Choo has signed with the Rangers, don't you??
