Devon Pryor became the first Texas basketball player to enter the transfer portal since Sean Miller took over as head coach for Rodney Terry earlier this week, sources confirmed Wednesday with the Austin American-Statesman.
A 6-foot-7 sophomore wing, Pryor appeared in 23 games this season and averaged 3.2 points and two rebounds per contest. His minutes increased as the season wore on, and he became a key member of the rotation late in the season, although he didn’t play much in the postseason after guard Chendall Weaver returned from an injury.
After the Longhorns’ season ended with an NCAA Tournament First Four loss to Miller's Xavier team on March 19, Pryor hinted that his future at Texas seemed murky since Terry’s firing seemed almost imminent.
“There’s definitely some reflecting to get on,” he said in the locker room after the loss.
Although Pryor didn’t play against Xavier, he said his sophomore season at Texas gave him confidence that he can play quality minutes at the Power Five level. Pryor, a three-star recruit out of Houston, reclassified into the 2023 class and enrolled as a 17-year-old at Texas. He played just 25 minutes as a freshman but became a fan favorite this season with his energy and high-flying dunks.

“I think I'm just going to remember everything off the court,” he said. “My whole life playing basketball, I've never been with such a connected group off the court. For me, being able to experience that first-hand action this year, I got to learn a lot. My brothers (on the team) taught me a lot. It just gave me a taste of what I’m able to endure and to know that I do belong. A lot of people got that message, I feel like.”
The spring portal window opened Monday, and rebuilding a Texas roster that will likely lose more than half of its rotation players seems like an immediate concern for Miller. Five Texas players used up their collegiate eligibility, including forwards Arthur Kaluma, Jayson Kent, Ze’Rik Onyema and Kadin Shedrick as well as guard Julian Larry. Freshman Tre Johnson, who led the SEC in scoring this past season, will likely enter the NBA draft.
With Pryor now in the portal, Miller only has three players — Weaver, junior guard Jordan Pope and graduate guard Tramon Mark — who are eligible to return who averaged at least 10 minutes a game this past season.
