I can see why you are a hockey fan if you think Randy Choate was a usable piece. He was a freaking left-handed relief specialist with a 6.04 ERA in 2002 and a 7.36 ERA in 2003. How usable is that.
Every year one pitcher goes down in spring training. You can book it. It was an incredibly stupid move by an idiot GM. John Patterson's 5.03 ERA, while nothing to write home about was better than every D-Back starter but Randy Johnson and Brandon Webb (sorry to say)
All of that might be true, however, Choate did bounce back toward the end of last season (posted a 1.54 ERA and 1.90 BAA in 13 games in September)... Plus... he only issued 1 HR in 50-innings.... His over-all ERA of 4.62 (or of season's past) is misleading because one to two horrible outings in his limited innings can really inflate his ERA dramatically....
He was better than their other options at the time (he filled a much major need), and unfortunately they are still in dire need of another LH reliever because I dont believe Fossum will perform well in the role (especiially with his frame).....
Choate did become more impressive as the season progressed because if I remember correctly..Mark Davis made some adjustments to his mechanics which turned his season around...plus he was overcoming some injuries of his own....His 7.36 ERA in '03 was only in 5 appearances (3.2 total innings) in which he did give-up 3 runs... He's sitll relatively young for his role (29 in which there's always immense longevity for LH relievers), and if they don't over-extend him this season (such as him exceeding 1-inning in each of his outings), then he can be very effective for years to come....
In terms of Patterson...the Dbacks had several pitchers (short-term/long-term) ahead on the depth charts, that losing him wouldnt have set them back..... Although, I must admit I wish they never parted with Capuano (the only player I dreaded the Dbacks losing in the Sexson deal)....
