Danny has signed a one-year deal with Tampa Bay. It's too bad Danny got hurt a few years ago because if he didn't who knows how the season would of gone.

Danny had a big hit in game 7 of the 2001 World Series. He brought home Finley on a double to put the Diamondbacks ahead 1-0. I still believe he was safe on Jeter's throw.

Good luck Danny and thanks.

Danny Bautista has played this game with class. From his years as a backup outfielder with the Braves to being the most consistant hitter on the D'backs (except for Gonzo, of course).

I wish him well.

What happened to Casey?

He married Jennie Finch and realized that was the most he would ever do with his career so he retired

How come someone didn't start a 'Thank You Casey Daigle' thread?
You really don't see the difference between the contributions to the D'backs of Danny Bautista and Casey Daigle?

Sure you do.

Damn. Discouraged after one bad year. After his awesome spring, I was hoping he'd be a future staffer.

Who knows, maybe he would have if asked. Don't think anyone asked. :( We'll miss you Danny.

I think he did a handful of games.

Danny could have played CF, but the Dbacks didn't want to spend the money on him, I'm afraid. He was a very good player in his time in Arizona, played hard game in and game out. Good luck in Tampa!

Indubitably. But he should never, ever have been on the big team. He wasn't nearly ready. Hard to be angry at a guy who is put in a position that he isn't ready for at all.

Just why was John Patterson traded? Yeah I know he got hurt, but they got rid of him for a truly god-awful pitcher. D-Backs really had their heads up their proverbial you know whats last off-season. At least I don't hate their every move this year.

I believe the Dbacks traded Patterson last season because he was out-of-options.....

Back to the original topic though.... Most of you know that I expressed my disdain toward Bautista a lot last season..... He pretty much excelled during the post season of '01 and last year because he was in a "contract season" and was able to turn it up a notch.... However, he would constantly sustain injuries whenever he did have a guaranteed contract... He tried to pull the ball too much instead of realizing that his strength should be to become a spray-hitter....Plus, the fact that he lacked speed on the basepaths didnt help matters any either....

Let's face it... He'll be 33 in May..which means he'll be beyond the "prime of his career", and will soon be on the decline....

Patterson was traded because he had no hope of making the Opening Day team last year and was out of minor league options, so we would have lost him for nothing.

I know that. That was my point. They traded JPatt because he was out of options and they didn't believe they had room on the 25 man roster. Of course then Shane Reynolds ends up hurt and they take Casey Daigle north.

The reason they got rid of Patterson turned out to be irrelevant as they had room on the roster, geez. They took Casey Daigle, a pitcher in AA the year before because they were really short of starting pitching options. Mostly that move shows the total stupidity last off-season as well as any other stupid move they made.

Yeah, turned out to be irrelevant. However, they couldnt see the future. They had no idea that Reynolds would end up hurt and at the time Daigle looked like a much much better option than Patterson, who not only was had an injury history, but was in the middle of another disasterous spring. Trading him for a usable piece while they could was a smart choice.

I can see why you are a hockey fan if you think Randy Choate was a usable piece. He was a freaking left-handed relief specialist with a 6.04 ERA in 2002 and a 7.36 ERA in 2003. How usable is that.

Every year one pitcher goes down in spring training. You can book it. It was an incredibly stupid move by an idiot GM. John Patterson's 5.03 ERA, while nothing to write home about was better than every D-Back starter but Randy Johnson and Brandon Webb (sorry to say).

Sorry, don't mean to be that hostile, but the move really annoyed me at the time. That and just about everything the D-Backs did which I hated. Last year was the perfect year to give JPatt a chance. Remember he was a $10 mil bonus baby, so they threw away a lot of money that was turned into a god-awful left handed pitcher, who is still on the 40 man roster. I'd have dropped Choate before Daigle.

All of that might be true, however, Choate did bounce back toward the end of last season (posted a 1.54 ERA and 1.90 BAA in 13 games in September)... Plus... he only issued 1 HR in 50-innings.... His over-all ERA of 4.62 (or of season's past) is misleading because one to two horrible outings in his limited innings can really inflate his ERA dramatically....

He was better than their other options at the time (he filled a much major need), and unfortunately they are still in dire need of another LH reliever because I dont believe Fossum will perform well in the role (especiially with his frame).....

Choate did become more impressive as the season progressed because if I remember correctly..Mark Davis made some adjustments to his mechanics which turned his season around...plus he was overcoming some injuries of his own....His 7.36 ERA in '03 was only in 5 appearances (3.2 total innings) in which he did give-up 3 runs... He's sitll relatively young for his role (29 in which there's always immense longevity for LH relievers), and if they don't over-extend him this season (such as him exceeding 1-inning in each of his outings), then he can be very effective for years to come....

In terms of Patterson...the Dbacks had several pitchers (short-term/long-term) ahead on the depth charts, that losing him wouldnt have set them back..... Although, I must admit I wish they never parted with Capuano (the only player I dreaded the Dbacks losing in the Sexson deal)....

Well, what did you want them to do? Where would you have stuck him? He couldnt be in the minors, and he couldnt make the team, what does that leave other than trading him? They had what looked like at the time far better options, he was not only coming off of an injury but undoubtably terrible both numbers wise and in terms of his "stuff" (his fastball was only in the mid-80s, no breaking ball at all at that time, although he did end up turning that around a bit). There was absolutely no roster spot for him, and the Diamondbacks were about to undoubtably lose him for nothing. They had to trade him for whatever they could get since he obviously was not going to come close to making the team. So they were able to get a lefty specialist, which they needed at the time. And your 7.36 ERA number is an absolute joke, he pitched a grand total of 3 major league innings that year. His career ERA is a respectable 4.50. He didnt have too bad of a year either, although Im sure Dback fans remember him for that grand slam against LA, however that was the only HR he gave up last year.

And I dont see what being a hockey fan has to do with anything.

But it was a doozy!! I mean, if you're only going to give up one... LOL

Schillingfan and I were both absolutely appalled by the signing of Shane Reynolds when it was rumored, so we were indignant about sending Patterson off from the start. We also both think 'Left-handed specialist' is an oxymoronic waste of roster space.

I believe someone said Terrero is in the same position as JPatt was - out of options, not good enough to make a case for a starting spot, so he is also likely to be a roster-spot dumpee.
