Wow.. That 2 assists per game leads the team? :D

Hey, go look during the championship years and check out who was the Lakers assist leader each of those years. You would be surprised...but then would deny it so you could make some other unfounded, completely wrong-headed dig at Kobe.

Assists Leaders:

1999-2000 season ... Shaquille O'Neal
2000-2001 season ... Shaquille O'Neal
2001-2002 season ... Kobe Bryant

Shaq was also the scoring leader for the team all 3 of those seasons and led the team in rebounds in 2 of the 3 seasons, with Robert Horry leading the team in '02.

So, I'm at Madison Square Garden and holy crap is that place AMAZING. Staples has nothing on it. The Forum might have, but I had no experience there sadly, other than on TV. AmericaUnitedWestAir is a dunghole compared to MSG. ANYway....

So I'm at MSG, and I get myself two 22 ounce beers (yes, they let you have 44 oz of beer at a time) and I get Bass and Spaten Premium. Total cost = $15.50. For two imported beers, 22 oz variety. Awesome, I say. Then I notice as I grab the beers that they are in these cool mugs with a hollowed out handle....in the handle is a freaking PRETZEL stick. I get two freaking import beers, two pretzels and two handled mugs for 15 bucks? Color me freaking SHOCKED. If only it was like this at Cardinals games.

So I make my way to my seats...they are great (there is NO bad seat in MSG...not a one) and relax. I'm being a good guy in another team's building. Cheering but not yelling...talking bball with the guys behind me (who think Kobe's suspension is BS, as do I).

During the game, I see that the rows in front of me and beside me (I was the last seat in an aisle) are kind of quiet, clapping for the knicks and also for the Lakers. I find this odd....I don't know what the deal is.

Smush Parker lights up the first quarter...he scores all the Lakers points for the first 9 or so minutes of the first quarter. Drew hits a free throw and a put back. Finally someone else not named William or Smush or Parker scores.

I notice the people in front of me are cheering for the Knicks...then clapping for the Lakers. I am confused. I don't know what the deal is.

Halftime of the game I call abomb...I say to him on the phone "thank GOD for Smush, or we'd be getting blown out right now." The lady in front of me turns around and says...."this is Smush's sister..." The phone stays in my lap while I talk to Smush's family and friends for a bit and abomb is on hold...I pick him back up and tell him bye...gotta talk to Smush's people (he hears all this, by the way.)

So it turns out most of the people in my row, and the two rows below me are Smush family and friends...the lady in front of me is his mom's best friend and we talk about Smush and Rafer Alston as the only streetball kids who made the jump to the NBA. It is awesome...and watching her conflicted between cheering Knicks or cheering Smush and Lakers is hilarious. After the game I give her a hug and tell her to make sure that Smush knows that Laker fans love him and his play, and that we hope he gets a nice, fat contract with the Lakers and wins a ring with us. She eats it up . I couldn't find (Smush's sister (who is cute, btw) but I tell his other friends in the row to give him some crap for not taking over the game on his home turf.

I leave MSG and get on the subway and when I get out on 57th and 7th, I am greeted with amazing snow falling all around. Just an amazing snowfall in the city...which is AWESOME. My roomate and I meet up and go to Scruffy Duffy's and have a couple of draft Yuenglings and call it a night...a great night.

I had a blast and meeting Smush's family was awesome. This capped my "almost famous" week where I met a guy who reps Paul McCartney, rode the elevator with Johan Santana after he got his Cy Young award (which looks freaking amazing..I was inches away from it) and talking with Smush's family. What a great week in New York.

It's now 3:20 NY time, and I have to be "on" in about 7 hours...so I'm going to bed.

Wrong...I don't know where you got that claptrap.

Lakers.com

99-00

APG, leader
4.9 Kobe
Shaq 3.8

2000/2001

5.0 Kobe
Shaq 3.7

2001/2002

5.5 Kobe
Shaq 3.0

But hey Brian, how about we look at more selfish Kobe, shall we?

2002/2003

Kobe 5.9
Shaq 3.1

MORE?

2003/2004

Gary Payton 5.5
Kobe 5.1
Shaq 2.9

Oh, so now Kobe has his OWN team, so he's gonna hog it right?

Oh, wait.

2004/2005

Kobe 6.0
Chucky 4.4 (which I find SHOCKING, when he jacked it up at any cost)

2005/2006

Lamar 5.5
Kobe 4.5
Smush 3.7

And for good freaking measure:

2006 playoffs...

Kobe 5.1
Lamar 4.9

And DAMN if I didn't almost forget this year.

Yep, yet again:

Kobe 5.5
Lamar 4.9

Can you check your chair now Brian (and Gee, by default?) That's what I thought...not a leg to stand on. :jedi:

I think I'll email the guy and let him know his stats are screwed up. He looked at the stats you just posted but since Shaq is on the top for scoring, this guy read across the line as if Shaq was tops in Assist also. I thought 3.8 was pretty low to lead a team with. :D

Also - please refrain from using the words Kobe and "chair" in the same post.

Kobe is a rapist, smug, arrogant, prima donna SOB.

The Lakers suck, and I can't for the life of me understand why ANYONE in the valley would cheer for them.

LA is one of the sh!tiest cities in the U.S.

It has no appeal whatsoever, and their teams suck.

Kobe is on the perfect team. It suits him.

Gee! Now you must come correct. I'm sure it will look like HarleyRider's post above, which has nothing to do with basketball and everything to do with banging your head into a wall a gazillijillion times.

Also other stats...I didn't see any year Horry led in rebounds. And I can't fathom when that would happen with Shaq on the team.

Meh, I SERIOUSLY (and I'm being honest here) can't understand why anyone would cheer for the Lakers. To me when you cheer for a team you are also cheering what that team (and locale) represents.

Kobe is a rapist. Point blank, pure and simple. Everytime I see or hear of him I wish nothing but bad for him because that's what he is and he bought his way out of it.

Phil Jackson is a jerk.

The city of LA sucks and the populace sucks. If it's not rich prima donnas, than it's criminals cheering for the team and filling up the arena.

This city is full of fickle fans. I LOATHE, HATE, and DETEST driving around seeing all these liscence plate frames for (insert favorite non-phoenix team here).

Go Phoenix or go home.

Cardinals, Sun Devils, Diamondbacks, Suns, Coyotes, Rattlers, or go home.

Okay - this is freaky. He lists Horry as leading the team in '01-'02.

Horry had only 5.9 rpg. Shaq had 10.7 rpg. It gets better - - - Samaki Walker had 7.0 rpg. :thud: :D

I'm going to sleep right now, but tomorrow I'm going to email the lakerstats site. :D

You're welcome to your opinion, but people are free to root for whichever team they want. Some cheer for the teams where they're from, some cheer for the teams wherever they currently live, some cheer for teams from places they have NO connection to in any way, etc. To each their own.

I have been a Lakers fan longer than Kobe Bryant has been alive. I will be a Lakers fan long after he's gone. I'm one of those that does not like Kobe, but still cheers on the team in spite of him.

Rip L.A. all you want. Several of the Suns regulars live there, or in the general area. I've lived there and still have friends and family there. All cities have good/bad areas and good/bad people, but feel free to stereotype the entire city with your biased opinion.

lol, why are you so worried about my 2 assists per game leading the team comment? I was obviously talking some smack.. But I love how you believe that an average of about 4.8 assists (didnt check, just a quick guesstimation) over a career is stellar.. Only Kobe fans, only Kobe fans...

Me too...all in good times. You might be right about 4.8 though. Probably sounds right....but he isn't a PG so I don't care so much...I do find it funny that he has led that team in assists tons of years, yet people only think about him not passing. funny, that.

Talk smack all you want...hell, that's what this part of the board is for. :)

That's what I like most about you BIM. You may not like Kobe, but your love for the Lakers is unwavering.

Sounds like good times as MSG.

A couple points...

- Kobe's blow to the head was intentional. He knows it. He tried to exaggerate his follow-through because he knew he blew the shot.

Kobe is so good at lying (re: OJ), that he's convinced himself it was unintentional (re: Rape).

The league office knows Kobe, and he's on a short rope ever since the BLATANT forearm shiver to the throat delivered to Mike Miller.

Karma comes in waves... and Kobe will be on the other side of it (something way worse than delivered by Raja Bell).

Kobe acts like a spoiled child every time he doesn't get a call. His body language when things aren't going his way (re: Game 7 against PHX last year) acts like poison. He's becomes a cancer to all those around him.

Admittedly, I wanted Kobe as a Phoenix Sun. After closely watching him every chance I get, I've come to realize this is a guy with serious mental problems (although blessed with an ungodly amount of talent). Glad he chose to re-up with LA.

The Lakers would be wise to do EVERYTHING within reason in trying to obtain Pau Gasol. The only untouchables should be Kobe and Odom. Not sure about how the salaries match. And, not sure Jerry West would want to help the Lakers.

Kobe is a headcase, but all he is guilty of in my mind is cheating on his wife and being a brat. Comparing him to a guy who nearly decapitated a waiter and the mother of his children is way off-base.

The refrence was just that... a reference. I didn't call Kobe a murderer. However, it does appear that they both got away with major felonies.

A lil late to the Kobe foul party (just watched it for the 1st time, but it looks like Kobe was trying to draw the foul against Ginobili. As many times Ginobili has flopped and hurt someone.... a bit of Karma. Now Ginobili should have been suspended for his flopping.

The NBA's rulings on these matters are ridiculous.

Trying to draw a foul by swinging his arm to the side on the follow through? I need to watch the replay again.

I think the appeals process is what is shocking. I wouldnt be suprised at all if it were changed during the next CBA. Kobe was notified during morning shootaround (approx 12:00 PM EST, 7 hours before tipoff) that he was suspended for the the game. That is completely ridiculous. The NBA has stated that given their current agreement, he can appeal (he did) and if it is overturned (which it never is), his game check would be refunded.

Ginobili's flopping when no one has made any contact with him, and injuring not only one, but two different Suns players. As someone else said, karma.

I agree. The appeals process (David Stern) needs to be changed as well.
