So IMAX has decided to put the kibosh on the 3D movie experience. Most movies are better in 2D, but there are some such as Avatar, and supposedly Valarian, that it adds to the experience. I'd hate to see it die off entirely, but if the money isn't there to support it, it likely will

I can't see in 3D.
At all.
I have a condition and my eyes don't work in stereo.

Add me to the list of 3D haters. It adds nothing to the movie for me 99% of the time I forget that it was even 3D. I'll never own a 3D TV.

It's probably just a product of nostalgia, but does anyone else feel like 3D is not as 3D-y as it used to be? I remember seeing the Michael Jackson 3D thing at Disneyland in the 80s and stuff was flying off the screen and we were reaching out trying to touch it and stuff. I've never experienced anything like that with modern 3D.

Anyways, I wont mind if it goes away. The way HD and 4k is going, we wont need it.

These and things like them are really the only reason to watch 3D in the IMAX. Massive concerts too.

3D Bluray's with a PSVR/PS4 works great. Screen is rounded, but whatever. But it fills your FOV like a giant screen. (Sony totally supports it, patched it in about 4-6 months ago.)

3D might be losing support because the 3DTV's cost so much more and 4ktv's aren't being made to support it. Thus the market isn't selling 3DTV's. They kind of screwed themselves as 3DTV's really aren't much more expensive to make. Probably 10-20 bucks per set to make turned into a $500-800 more for the TV to buy (of course also with a better spec set in other areas). They really should of made almost every HDTV a 3DTV.

If there's no aftermarket to sell 3D movies, it cuts the rationale to make them for theaters. Of course it also didn't help the 3D Bluray versions came in at $25-40 vs $15-20 for the Bluray.

It's too bad because with HDR and 4k, these things could make 3D far better. Clearer 3D movies and brighter would solve two of the problems with 3D movies (at home).

Maybe it'll come back when 120hz screens and everything else become more standard on the low end of the spectrum. But holographic tv is the real 3dtv, whenever they get around to making them. Around 2010 they were saying towards the end of the decade, but I haven't heard much about them in the last few years.

IMAX is probably suffering from the fact that Hollywood movies now generally suck and the cost is way too high for many to go to. What does a family of four pay to see a crappy movie these days? $90 or so for 4 tickets, 4 large soda's, and 2 medium or large popcorns? That's not even IMAX prices either. Probably $100+ for IMAX. Hollywood has been really down on their game the past few years. Way too much cost cutting thru needless CGI. Just about every film has become Attack of the Clones level CGI. Whereas The Force Awakens actually had real sets. So refreshing.

That Michael Jackson 3D thing isn't as good as you remember. I remember seeing it when I was young and kind of disappointed in it. But it was cool, but I was expecting more. Saw it about 10 years ago in my late 20's and it really sucked. Current 3D is much better. Just one of those things where you remember it better then it was. Then again they did throw that fog mister stuff in it, which helped the Michael Jackson 3D experience.

I was talking about a U2 3D concert experience that was INSANE in IMAX. Never saw the MJ one.

I watched MJ in 3d back in 2010, its still good. The difference is, it was made for 3D, not having 3d if people want it but also being 2d. movies or whatever done in 3d only are the bomb, stuff flies at you and etc but when its a 3d and 2d movie, its not the same.

Love 3D. Love the 3D movie experience. The problem I see with ditching it all together is that from what I read 3D Blu Rays are cash cows because of the markup from standard. Now that 4K is ramping up they might just switch gears.

I hope it survives even as a specialty verses standard at theaters or home viewing.

The technology has been around for over 100 years. It seems to become popular and then go out of style every decade.

IMO: RealD 3D is better than IMAX 3D.

I only watch movies at the AMC Arrowhead mall near me (AMC Stubs membership), since not only is it close, but they do reserved seating.

I usually always go for the RealD version of whatever movie, if available. But when AMC Deer Valley 17 started doing reserved seating for their IMAX venue, I decided to take the family to go so Guardians of the Galaxy in IMAX 3D.

It was slightly jarring as an experience. Not necessarily a knock on IMAX 3D, but it felt like I was watching a bunch of toys in front of me at one point.

RealD just gives you a "slightly enhanced" look to the 3D experience with some "extra pops" if a movie decides to throw one in.

Do you know if your IMAX was equipped with one of the new laser projectors? Because my experience has been that blows away any RealD 3D movie I have ever been to.

modern 3d does not look like it is coming off the screen as much...not like the harpoon gun scene from Friday the 13th 3d..

personally I like the modern 3d... the depth is what I like... it is more,...3D-IN...rather than 3D-out...and for me it is a much more satisfying viewing experience.

I must admit though...I owned a 60" 3D plasma for years and never even took the 3D glasses out of the package

ha! that's literally what I think of almost every time I think about 3D.

Yeah... it's definitely more 3D-in these days. I wish they did both.

Best thing I ever saw in 3D was a U2 concert in IMAX. It was INSANE how much it felt like you were literally five feet away from the stage. That said... my experience was "enhanced" at the time so that might have helped too.

lol...depending upon the method of enhancement....it may not have even been a 3D show....

I think filmmakers were so paranoid about the stigma of 3D in your face being cheese that they went to far the other way. JC started it with Avatar talking about how depth was the best way to showcase 3D. I agree with him to a point but it was like they were afraid to put stuff in your face to an extreme degree. If it's organic with the scene it's OK.

Yeah... I was kinda hoping for something where they were flying through the floating land masses that it made you feel like you were flying through with them. A true immersive experience. Maybe the tech wasn't there yet for that and that's why he waited so long to make the five-ogy (no clue what 5 would be trilogized)
