3D Bluray's with a PSVR/PS4 works great. Screen is rounded, but whatever. But it fills your FOV like a giant screen. (Sony totally supports it, patched it in about 4-6 months ago.)
3D might be losing support because the 3DTV's cost so much more and 4ktv's aren't being made to support it. Thus the market isn't selling 3DTV's. They kind of screwed themselves as 3DTV's really aren't much more expensive to make. Probably 10-20 bucks per set to make turned into a $500-800 more for the TV to buy (of course also with a better spec set in other areas). They really should of made almost every HDTV a 3DTV.
If there's no aftermarket to sell 3D movies, it cuts the rationale to make them for theaters. Of course it also didn't help the 3D Bluray versions came in at $25-40 vs $15-20 for the Bluray.
It's too bad because with HDR and 4k, these things could make 3D far better. Clearer 3D movies and brighter would solve two of the problems with 3D movies (at home).
Maybe it'll come back when 120hz screens and everything else become more standard on the low end of the spectrum. But holographic tv is the real 3dtv, whenever they get around to making them. Around 2010 they were saying towards the end of the decade, but I haven't heard much about them in the last few years.
IMAX is probably suffering from the fact that Hollywood movies now generally suck and the cost is way too high for many to go to. What does a family of four pay to see a crappy movie these days? $90 or so for 4 tickets, 4 large soda's, and 2 medium or large popcorns? That's not even IMAX prices either. Probably $100+ for IMAX. Hollywood has been really down on their game the past few years. Way too much cost cutting thru needless CGI. Just about every film has become Attack of the Clones level CGI. Whereas The Force Awakens actually had real sets. So refreshing.
That Michael Jackson 3D thing isn't as good as you remember. I remember seeing it when I was young and kind of disappointed in it. But it was cool, but I was expecting more. Saw it about 10 years ago in my late 20's and it really sucked. Current 3D is much better. Just one of those things where you remember it better then it was. Then again they did throw that fog mister stuff in it, which helped the Michael Jackson 3D experience.
