The Cabin in the Woods

According to MTV, Joss Whedon is writing and producing Cabin in the Woods.

He co-wrote the project with "Buffy" alum and Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard. "It's genius, it's funny," Goddard said about the film. "It's got a harder and darker edge, but it's also got classic Whedon qualities. It'll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time."

So what is it about? "There's a reason the title is so straightforward," Goddard added. "It’s its own sub-genre, the cabin in the woods, and this is sort of our take on it. It's fresh and new."

United Artists Entertainment (UA) has announced that Kristen Connolly (Revolutionary Road, The Happening), Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek, "Home and Away"), Anna Hutchison ("Underbelly," "Go Girls"), Fran Kranz ("Dollhouse," The Village), and Jesse Williams (Brooklyn's Finest, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2) will join the previously announced cast members Richard Jenkins (The Visitor, Burn After Reading) and Bradley Whitford (Bottle Shock, "The West Wing") in The Cabin in the Woods.

Directed by Drew Goddard from a screenplay by Goddard and Joss Whedon who is also producing, the film's plot is a closely held secret. As such, details surrounding the actor's roles are being kept under wraps.

"Finding this ensemble has been very hard and very rewarding," observed Whedon, who continued, "Each of the 'kids' is unique, fascinating and talented, and like true friends, the group is more than the sum of its parts. These are people you care about, able to go toe-to-toe with the amazing actors we've corralled thus far, and not unpretty in the bargain. I can't wait to harm them."

Production is under way; the film is slated to open wide on February 5, 2010.

The film will be distributed by MGM.

I only ask because most of the reviews I've read say the same thing, and...well...I just don't trust you.

This movie F'ing rocked. I admit I am a Whedon fan and I wanted this movie to be good but I didn't expect this.

People go see this movie.

I saw it expecting some crazy blow me away with originality and twists and turns that blow me away that I don't see coming, and I ended up laughing the majority of the way throw at the corniness and stupidity of the whole thing...

I will give that it is pretty original and when it comes to horror films original is king, but it is original because it just mixes up all the horror films that you see and combines them into one..

The last 20 minutes were some of the most laughable scenes I have seen, and it becomes clear they are making it as a mockery of a horror films, and I can completely appreciate it..

I just am not sure whether it is a horror film trying to be a comedy or vice versa, if you love all the vampire/zombie films you will probably like this, but IMO, it is no Zombieland..

They have said from day one this was a comedy horror film so it's not really trying to be or the other but rather both on purpose. I thought that is what this film did great. I didn't find the film "corny" one bit. I did think though the film had brilliantly placed and intentional camp where it made sense (to make fun of horror cliches).

This is not the same type of movie as Zombieland IMO. That movie was written as a comedy that just happened to have horror elements. Not the same thing IMO. Zombieland and Sean of the Dead are more of the same vain versus this film.

This is really not a new Whedon thing either. If you look at Buffy and Angel for example he made fun of cliches all the time in those as well. Here it was just on steroids throwing winks at the audience in reference to all the bad horror films in recent years.

Bottom line is if your a comedy horror fan....this is a must see IMO.

No. I think you would enjoy it anyway. That is like saying your not a big fan of drama or action films that you can't enjoy them. You can still enjoy it but it might not be something you seek out on your own without good reviews or word of mouth.

My wife and her sister just got back and loved it. My brother in law just called and wants to go see it now. I will probably see it again in the next few days so he can go.

This.. I personally thought it was ridiculous in every sense of the word, yet I would encourage others to see it..

LOL. I could see that but once you understand the context behind the movie (turning horror cliche's on their side) it makes much more sense. I think your right from the sense it has alot to do with what your expecting to see when you go in.

However, clearly critics had an idea what to expect from Whedon. That's their job.

Same here. In fact the only other horror movie I could get her to watch was the last Scream movie on rental.

She liked it which surprised the hell out of me.

Didn't even know it was a Whedon film, but seeing Amy Acker and that guy from Dollhouse was a hint, and then about 10 minutes in it was clear he had a hand in it.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. But I've liked almost everything written by Whedon, so that's not surprising. I don't get some of the negative reviews though. Seems some people were expecting something completely different. It was a comedy. But even though I was expecting a horror film, I was not disappointed.

This movie got negative reviews? Geeze, it was one of the better movies of the year, IMO. Turns all the traditional stereotypes of horror on its head.

Loved this movie... And just when u think you've seen it all, it just goes ludicrous speed in act three.

Also, not sure what people wanted as far as twists. I don't think there were really supposed to be all that many. I mean, the "twist" is pretty much gone by the time the title rolls. I think the movie was more twisted than twisty if that makes sense.
