I NEVER get how players somehow jump from the 3rd round into the 1st round because of the combine. If he couldn't do it on the field, why the f do you care if he can work out better than the rest? Likewise I see players drop who have no reason to, but again freaking 'combine' numbers.

It's an entire waste of time. Any coach or team who moves a player up or down on their board because of the combine is a f'n fool!

4.32 vs. 4.4 on one run...who cares....

anyone hyping a player here because of the combine is just as much the fool.

Mike Mamula comes to mind as a work-out warrior whose status spiked due to a great combine...

I suppose if they had a test to see who can jump over the highest pole and land back on their feet, Adrian Wilson would have been the #1 player taken.

I understand what your saying that it's what happens on the field that counts.

At the pro level you get the cream of the crop. They can all play the game pretty well. Some are obviously more highly skilled than others and their ratings show it.

The reason a player falls or rises from a current rating (where they are projected because of their skill levels) are because the intangables that are weiged in after their seasons conclude. Those include interviews and the various skill sets that can help determine their cielings as far as how much they may progress as a pro.

I think the point is to assess their raw talent, the rest can be taught while raw talent is genetic.

A player can do great in college because he's surrounded by great players. Conversely a great player can look average because he's surrounded by chumps.

The combine helps with these distinctions.

The combine is okay AS LONG AS you don't forget how they actually play football is the most important thing in evaluating players.

The Wonderlic is the biggest joke of the whole deal. I can't believe they still waste money on that test.

How does that help when they are not actually playing football?

I think it's a joke that the NFL hasn't learned their lesson on over inflating the value of the combine...look at the film people!

5-11 vs 6-1, 4.3 vs 4.4, etc...blah blah blah.

If you could measure heart...that's another story.

No kidding. I remember being involved in many heated debates about Terrell Suggs after his workout numbers were posted. People went from thinking he was a slam dunk top ten pick to being a complete bust just because he ran a 4.8. It really pissed me off when we passed on him. I don't think it was just the workout numbers that made us pass on him, but I know it figured into that decision to trade down.

The Measureables are only 1 part of the combine and isnt even what is weighted to most in their grades. Most scouts, GM's, and coaches will tell you taht the interview process(which includes tests on film and in game situations alog with personal character issues and questions about issues in the past), and the complete medical evaluation.

The combine is not just 40 yard dashes and bench presses.

Yep he went from a lead pipe cinch to us passing on him after the workouts.

There are a lot of factors to consider when selecting a player and the combine is only one part of the selection process. It allows teams to interview a lot of players at one time. Also any medicals tests and x-rays are shared. It may eliminate more players than it helps.

Actually, I think that the one position that is a good position for the combine is QB. Coaches can interview QBs, look at their footwork and throwing mechanics and give them some pointers. If they can take the pointers and use them a bit then it shows that they can be coachable, if not it they may want to pass on that guy. Especially valuable for later round QB picks.

I think it is foolish to put too much emphasis on the combine numbers. I agree a good football player is still a good football players no matter what his numbers are.

But those numbers also give you an idea what that person's strength's/weakness's are gunna be at the next level.

You have to take into account what that player is gunna be going up against everyday in the NFL.

Good talent evaluators get lots of good information at the combine.
Bad talent evaluators get fooled.

The combine is definitely not a waste. It rewards competent front offices and exposes the poor ones.

It does have some value to it. It will show who has a strong work ethic. It shows if a player gets it or not. I agree about the qb thing. It does show if a qb can make all the throws or not. If the QB has a flaw in his throwing motion or can't make a certain throw, it will show up.

It's a level playing field...no inflated numbers from the schools...so for that there is some benefit. It might be very beneficial if a team is undecided between two players, as this could be the tie breaker. Hey, it's good for the economy of Indy.

The Valley so low.

Now there's blasphemy in my book. Surely there are studies about how many players bomb correlated with low W scores. [Is it true Dubya's wonderlic score was 4?]

joe has got it right it. The most important part of the combine are the interviews, and the personal contact they provide to the talent evaluators. They are able to meet with a large number of recruits in a single location/setting. It's something that would be impossible to accomplish otherwise. The numbers from the physical tasks can be gotten via other means of communication. But there is nothing as effective as a face to face meeting to evaluate a prospect.

Duece Latui on the "Rock and Manucci" program yesterday said basically the same thing also. It's the mental aspect not the physical that make the combine so important.
