All of those players on the Cardinals are better than the corresponding players on the Pats save Brady & Gronk

For the record Edelman is 6th and Mathieu is 6th. You add in their salaries and the Patriots are at 31.87 for their top 6 and the Cardinals are at 47.54 Almost half of the Cardinal cap is chewed up by 6 players while the Patriots still have slightly less than 70% of their salary cap left. My point is Keim has done a less than masterful job of managing the cap space. There is no way (if they keep Fitz and Palmer at the salaries they are at now) that they can keep CC and Jones. The Mathieu contract was a mistake, so was the Palmer extension, Bethel too.

There are only 2 QBs with greater Salary cap hits than Palmer, Flacco and Romo and they are fractionally ahead of Palmer. Palmer is the 3rd highest paid QB in the NFL. The problem is Keim rewarded him for having one outstanding year. His first two here were typical Palmer years.

Now you're into draft philosophy and that is a murky area indeed. There is no "correct" answer to your question. Here's how I view QBs. There are very few QBs that are sure things. The last ones I saw were Luck and Eli Manning. Sure things to me are clear talents who are also students of the game. I want a QB that can read defenses or at least tries to do so. The QB also needs to be likely durable. Bridgewater met the first 2 criteria, but not this one. I still rated him the best of his class, but wouldn't have taken him early in round 1. Since I no longer do a mock draft I now look at the ones others do. Rob Rang over at CBS now has 3 QBs going top 5. That seems likely to me. If Watson was there I'd pass. He's a good prospect, but I want a sure thing there because I'm likely giving up a probable Pro Bowl player at another position. In fact I see no sure thing in this pool but unlike many others I think this pool is deep and I believe there will be some winners coming as late as round 4. The trick as always will be picking the right guy.

Harry: let's say the Cards end up drafting at #9

It seems the most likely QB to be there, if one is there, is Deshaun Watson of Clemson

Do you take him?

For the Arians mold, Watson is a bit short but has a live arm. For the Arians offense, super raw. But-- a natural leader, athletic and apparently, a hard worker and good kid. Arians has an in with Dabo, so he likely gets a true appraisal.
Not Harry, but Watson is the only QB I'd consider in round 1. Their offense throws the ball downfield, he's smart, athletic, and has a good arm. Everybody likes Dak Prescott, well, he's in that mold but a much better prospect coming into the league.

Plus, if you want to go by the Bill Parcells model of drafting a QB, he fits that criteria too. 30 career starts, high winning %, and high accuracy passer.

dreamcastrocks: He would still be making $13.3M guaranteed + $5.5M = $18.8M

T.J.: Palmer's incentive to take a pay cut would be to give the team the best chance to go for the ring. Adding $5.5M to the cap could mean adding a good, veteran RG plus helping to re-sign TE Gresham.
Palmer could accomplish the exact same thing through restructure and not lose any money.

Does anyone realize that Tom Brady counts a total of $13.7M on this year's cap? $14M next year. This is one of the many reasons why the Patriots win year after year. The organization and the players understand the kind of talent and depth it takes to make a run at the Super Bowl every year. Gronk next year counts a total of $7M.

The fact is---there is no way they would have ever paid Calais Campbell $15.3M on the cap in any given year. The Pats would go nowhere near paying Carson Palmer $24.1M. Palmer at $24.1M is so far out of the question, both in terms of what his fair market value is at his age and coming off a down year and how that cap figure stifles and restricts the overall talent and depth of the roster.
That's because his wife makes triple the amount, or more, than he does...lol He's got a sugar momma...doesn't need the $$...lol

Gronk is single---and his cap figure is a mere $7M next year. It's the Patriots' way, regardless of spouses.
