Some of my observations after breaking down the game:
1. Calais Campbell is a future pro bowler. He is already better than Smith. He did struggle against the run on certain plays, especially when facing their guards (Manuwai), was pushed back quiet alot, lost the balance, even when single teamed. But he did held his own many times and as a pass rusher he was flat out amazing. He uses his hands to disengage so damn well and he is very athletic once he gets free. Besides, he reads the plays suprisingly well for a young kid. The screen he read on one play basically destoyed that play for Jags. Not even mentioning his pass deflection and the blocked FG. The "lost" sack on Gerrard was maybe somthing he should have made. Went after stripping the ball more than he should. Gerrard is a big guy and hard to bring down so going after the ball is something you should do against guys like Warner and Manning. But the play itself was a perfectly executed stunt. Calais did a delayed stunt after Berry went inside, selling the inside rush and than later going outside. His athleticism allowed him to turn arround the edge. Having a lineman like him and Dockett that are so athletic allows many of these stunts to be made efficiently. Indeed, the same stunt was made no less than 3 times yesterday with Berry going inside and Calais outside, and two of the times it brought heat to the QB from Campbell.
2. O-Line was much better yesterday. Deuce is our best runblocker in space and im suprised we don't pull him more often. And that's what this lines biggest weakness is: We only have Deuce to do that well on consistent basis and therefore we don't block at all on the second level. Levi is not handling the tackle job well on passing plays, he is not good having all that responsibility in space and he would make an amazing guard and i'm sure the transition need to be made at some point or other unless he gets better. He runblocks very well on LOS and never makes mistakes when the space is not too big.
3. The biggest mistake from last game is that we didn't do many screens to our WR's and the fast throws to remove the pressure from Warner. Long routes with an O-Line that had problems was very stupid. This game, we corrected that by starting out with short well times routes and screens and once our tackles were in the game, we could do much more. We gameplanned well this time.
4. Timmy is very good and hell of a reciever as well. His blocking yesterday was amazing. As rookie he couldn't protect the ball as well as having problems blocking. All that is reversed now. He is the complete package. I don't see Beanie beating him out this year at all altough he is explosive like JJ was last year. They make a good tandem. LSH made a huge block on the pass to Urban, amazing to see such a small back make a huge block like that and giving Urban room for making the 1st down!
5. Kurt Warner will not play well when his O-Line breaks down and he lacks two of his recievers he has the perfect timing and coordination with. No other QB would have done well in last game. Amazing how fans overreact to a bad game, not breaking down why it happened. He did had bad games last year as well. Remember Jets....? And Levi getting beat every damn play with a 3 and 4 man rush and Warner struggling? He can't do this alone. When O-Line is doing at least an acceptable job and he has this reciving corps and Timmy in backfield... Only the sky is the limit ...
6. Dockett was completely absent from this game. He is even facing single teams now all of the time since we played exclusively 34 and he is facing tackles much more. He didn't read the plays well and he was shooting the gaps without even looking at the plays. What he does best is one gap penetration without any read at all. Robinson, Calais and Watson are much better in reading and reacting to a play. But nothing bad about it. Sometimes when DD has luck in penetrating and the play is there, obviously there is nothing bad but only good in just shooting a gap without even reading the play beforehand. That's how all his highlights are. But it can be really bad as well like the long MJD run where he just shoot the gap and didn't read and contain the weakside. It's nice to see that we have a blend on the D-Line with guys that can penetrate and guys that are more cautios and read and react. I think we have a perfect mixture now. Alan Branch looks improved. And boy did Keilen Dykes look great. He beat not one, but two guys on that play. Manuwai AND Eugene Monroe and made the pressure on QB. He is here to stay that's for sure. Always liked this kid as prospect in a 34 defense.
7. Rolle has still problems in open field tackling. He is much improved obviously but every game there is a play where he takes a horrible angle. His punt returns are not the best either. Once he has the ball in his hands tough, that's another story... He has a nose for the endzone!
8. Seems that we are switching to a cover 3 secondary... Something we started to do in playoffs last year with great succes. That is why we play our corners so much off the LOS suddenly and it works well when you have two athletic CB's that can close the gap quickly. That also gives us possibility to play Adrian more often in the box and Rolle out of the box, which only plays to our strengths. I like that alot. The reason our rushing defense is even better now is because of the new scheme , and having Adrian more in the box(and that's why we were so good at it in the playoffs as well). But it does put alot of pressure on the CB's underneath and that's why you will see DRC getting beat much more this year. Look at yesterday how often the flat was uncovered and he had a 10 yards gap down to his man. That obviously allowed some easy completions underneath. But that's the drawback of the scheme. DRC is really quick in getting down so he will get less exposed than most other corners to this.
9. Hayes is the most consistent player on this team and maybe the most consistent player in the league. Consistency means alot for any playcaller. You know what a guy does and you can call based on that, he never fails. Not the most talented guy tough. But he means alot for this defense. Much more than you would think.
10. Taking KW out was stupid. It can cost you the game, and i'm sure Whis has learned the lesson. ML is no KW that's for sure.
