James Harrison was released 3 times. Players like that do get cut, its just a matter of a team taking a gamble and seeing if it works out.

Right. And Pittsburgh didn't get any immediate returns from picking up Harrison. I believe the suggestion in the earlier post was finding someone who offered immediate impact.

Bertrand Berry was released by the Colts and the Rams. Denver got him from Edmonton of the CFL of all places. Chris Clemons of Seattle? He's on his 6th team.

James Harrison sat behind Joey Porter for 3 years in Pittsburgh if I remember correctly.

Did you read that article on (or was it on the Cardinals broadcast) where Horton talked about why Harrison struggled initially in the NFL? He couldn't remember the defensive plays, so he was constantly out of position. So what did they do? They put all the plays on his wrist and that's what got him over the hump.

I was not a fan of the Porter signing from day 1 but to expect him to play at a high effort level in the pre-season is kidding yourself. I don't expect much but we'll have a better gauge of him when the real season starts.

When Horton is watching from above, it's guys like Porter (who we re-signed for dirtcheap considering..) that are directing traffic. Porter knows the system, and when it's ran right Porter and everybody else will get clean runs at the QB. The secondary has to hold for this to happen, then we can get blitzhappy.

In my estimation, anyone complaining about how our ones played on defense is just clueless. I include Carter in that mix because he was at the Nose more than anyone else.

San Diego's offense is one of the most prolific in the NFL, and Rivers is one of the elite QB's. They have great personnel (two deep at every position). They have been together for several years now. They all know the playbook. (That alone puts them light years ahead of our defense. Taking all that into account, I feel pretty good about where our defense is at this stage. They played well enough to get a win, even though the scrubs washed that out. I find little to fault about our defense in this game. Those of you who are crying wolf, are simply not seeing what the defense did, they are merely finding things to complain about, much like the haters of our offensive line complain about everything that the O-line does. It's the same ole people complaining about the same ole things, whether or not they actually occurred.

Well said, our defense is perfect and beyond reproach, and headed to a top 10 ranking this year. Can you believe the pressure we were able to get on Rivers!?! We've really got some pass rushing demons on the ends!

Nowhere in there did he even imply such a thing.

Well, he was nice enough to tell those of us that "thought" we saw areas of concern involving our starters on D that we're not just wrong, we're clueless. Not that I'm bothered by that, I already knew I was clueless.

He clearly implies that those who criticize the D and offensive line are serial whiners and are always "finding something to complain about".

Sadly, both units have earned all the criticism they've received. Rank near the bottom in D over the last couple years, and you're going to be criticized.

Our ones on D played ok, but nothing spectacular. We gave up 17 points, which over a whole game would be 35, not something to write home about.

Points aside, my main concern was to see whether or not we can generate a pass rush. This game gave me no more hope that there is a worse pass rushing team in the entire league.

It seems blatantly obvious that we won't be able to generate pressure with 4, which means we'll be blitzing quite a bit, opening us up to many big plays.

Hopefully Horton has a bunch of tricks up his sleeve, because I've seen nothing to convince me we're more likely to be a top ten, then bottom ten D.

I will wager that the Cards are not a bottom ten defense (based on points allowed).

You got it pardner, based on points/yards last year, we were bottom 3. What's your wager?

Whoever loses has to have "<winner> is better than I am." in signature from end of season to draft.

Ha, I like it. It'll make your posts all the more enjoyable. :trout: Deal!

If you win, tell Mulli you thought he meant from end of season until the next military draft.

Steve

Quite unspecific for a lawyer...although then perhaps a draft beer would qualify?
