Tom Cruise is said to have agreed to appear as one of the gang of gunslingers in the adaptation of John Sturges' 1960 film, and Damon is set to star alongside him as Vin, the character Steve McQueen played in the original.

A source tells Britain's The Sun, "MGM are throwing big money at the film and wanted some top names to fill the main parts. You can't get much bigger than Cruise and Damon."

Why fight it anymore? This is the trend that filmmakers have taken, and it'll continue.

With all he competition for the entertainment dollar from myriad sources, and the public's refusal to accept and support a film that cost less than $200 million to make, using a recognizable title only enhances a films chances of making money, let alone break even.

And that doesn't matter one little bit to me. Yeah, go on, do remakes, and I'll just be mildly annoyed. Remake absolute perfect classics like this, and I'll be pissed. What are we going to have? Casablanca, the remake? Some Like It Hot, the remake? Eff that!

A Western (meaning American) remake of a Japanese film is a bit different. Sturges took a samurai story and adapted it to the Old West.

Some people think that Kurosawa took a story that had all the hallmarks of an American Western and adapted it to Japanese samurai. He certainly was the most Western of eastern directors. However, a remake is a remake. Do I think we need a remake of a remake? No, I think, especially in this climate where the Western doesn't make any money, why bother?

The only thing that appears to be going for it is that it has Tom Cruise and Matt Damon attached. Will that reinvigorate the genre? Who knows? I love old school Westerns, but they are definitely a dying breed. It's just a shame that original films like Open Range don't get the attention they deserve for being really good.

Does this mean we'll finally get a remake of Michael Crichton's Westworld too?
After all,the stalking gunslinger character that Yul Brynner played was taken directly from his character in The Magnificent Seven.
Westworld needs a remake IMO(despite the Jurassic Park franchise).

I too wish there were more true westerns being made,TM7 could be an ok film with the right cast.

I remember when it came out he would be Lestat in Interview with a Vampire I thought it would be the worst casting ever.

Instead he was amazing.

He and Nicholas Cage are generally the kiss of death for a film for me these days.

I can see Nick Cage. But Tom Cruise makes quality movies overall IMO.

Interesting. I would never lump Tom Cruise and Nicholas Cage together. Nicholas Cage is an awful actor.

But looking at Cruise's resume, it's not horrible. He's had some movies that weren't great, but nothing that was a flop like Cage has:

Mission Impossible 4
Knight and Day
Valkyrie
Tropic Thunder
Lions for Lambs
MI: III
War of the Worlds
Collateral
The Last Samurai
Minority Report
Vanilla Sky

I mean, other than a few movies that weren't top notch, like Knight and Day, MI: III and War of the Worlds, none of those are as bad as the Ghost Rider movies or Season of the Witch. In fact, his resume is quite good. If anything, I put Cruise up with Brad Pitt as far as acting goes. I give Cruise kudos for trying something new--not sure he's ever been in a western (Far and Away might be the closest thing to one).

I will grant you that Cruise is a far superior actor to Nicholas Cage, who really doesn't qualify as an actor in my book.
